So do others thoroughly check out the menu before going to a new restaurant

Or are you like my insane friend who will look at the menu tomorrow when we go for brunch and decide in the moment HmmWink

Also, how many mains is too many for brunch because I can’t decide between 3 full meals off the menu Grin

I’d say 11 is too early for pulled pork.

I’d also go with the shakshuka, a bit of zing will turn it from a breakfast to a lunch. Unusual for shakshuka to have fried egg, would normally be baked.

I reckon it depends how much you like a runny yolk between that and the burrito (scrambled).

headintheproverbial · 13/02/2022 08:03

Very rarely I'll have a quick look in advance just to see the type of thing on offer. But sitting with the menu in your hand and / or hearing about any specials them might have on is all part of the fun!!

SpaceDetective · 13/02/2022 08:11

I do now but only because I'm coeliac. Eating out requires lots of research. Sucks most of the enjoyment out of the occasion. Really miss the days I could just wander into a restaurant and choose something

Toanewstart23 · 13/02/2022 08:13

Yes but not for the best reasons if I’m honest

Same. I used to be a look on the day type but now it's a frantically research options since my diagnosis and I hate it!
nancy75 · 13/02/2022 08:16

Not only do I check the menu, I’ve discovered checking the Instagram page - like the menu but with photos!
I never decide in advance, I’m just a greedy cow who likes looking at food Grin

SmallPrawnEnergy · 13/02/2022 08:24

Do you generally find change and spontaneity difficult?
Alreet Freud, settle down. It’s a normal thing to do, you don’t need to go psychoanalysing OP based off a lighthearted thread. You’re bringing the vibe down.

That menu is amazing. I’m so jealous. The burrito sounds lush but most things oh the menu do! It’s also never too early for anything so go for it, a pulled pork for the table sounds like a great idea!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/02/2022 08:30

I do if it’s somewhere I haven’t been before.
That way I won’t be tempted to make a face and moan that there are too many things with the dreaded goat’s cheese/fennel (the only 2 things I really don’t like). So I do that at home instead. 🙂

Kitkat151 · 13/02/2022 08:38

I do if it’s say french....because more likely to not have many veggie options.....we would often rule out at this stage for this reason

TimBoothseyes · 13/02/2022 08:46

I always check to see what the meat free options are.

CrinklyCraggy · 13/02/2022 08:54

Spending time choosing and discussing the menu is part of the evening out for me.

Goatinthegarden · 13/02/2022 08:55

I eat pretty much anything, so I quite like the surprise of not seeing a menu until I sit down.

DH is veggie, so if going somewhere new with him, he usually checks the menu beforehand. He is not terribly fussy though so will often be happy even if there are limited veggie options. Most restaurants have vastly improved their vegetarian options lately which makes it easier.

My mum gets very excited about eating out and likes a browse of the menu well in advance.

When we go somewhere with work, it takes a lot of discussion and a lot of menus being sent back and forth before we get anywhere close to an agreement on where to go.

GnomeoAndPaulette · 13/02/2022 08:59

Yep, don't have truffle chip, it's like eating someone's bad breath Grin
Bloody Mary and pulled pork would be my choice because I wouldn't have them at home

Jesusmaryjosephandtheweedon · 13/02/2022 11:03

Always check.menu, I'm veggie so will check before I commit. So many times I've been left with a plain tasteless pasta....no thanks. Once I see a few veggie options then I'm in. Wouldn't decide before I got there though.

Jesusmaryjosephandtheweedon · 13/02/2022 11:05

@Mrsweasleysclock

I always check beforehand especially if I didn't choose the restaurant. I am a lone vegetarian in a sea of meat eaters and I like to make sure there is something that resembles an actual meal for me rather than going and just eating chips (which has happened more than you would think).
Also this! Grabbed lunch at a pub one day with DH as we were out looking for stone for the garden. Even the vegetable wasn't vegetarian as they use chicken stock to make it. Ended up with a roll and a plate of chips ☹ while DH had a full carvery with 3 different meats and 4 different potatoes!
Jesusmaryjosephandtheweedon · 13/02/2022 11:07

Even the vegetable soup wasn't veggie I meant!

AnotherMansCause · 13/02/2022 11:11

I always check if we go anywhere, I have a ridiculous number of migraine & triggers, plus IBS. Often there is 1 viable choice & I still have to ask them to remove something from the plate.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 13/02/2022 13:28

Thanks all! I went for the Burriro, had FOMO when the next table got the Shashuka but thankfully the burrito was superb! Happy days Grin

Thanks for the update, I would forever have wondered!

FluffyBooBoo · 13/02/2022 13:53

I look in advance to make sure the menu looks good.

I decide what to have on the day

Floralnomad · 13/02/2022 13:55

We always check the menu to see they have something gf that is suitable ( not salad ) but choose when we arrive .

ThisMustBeMyDream · 13/02/2022 14:00

I didn't do. Pre-covid. There was always something I'd happily eat.
Post-covid I have to check absolutely every time. It has gotten so bad now that I pretty much no longer eat out as the menus are so restricted that I can rarely find something I like. I prefer vegetarian (not vegan and gluten free which is what lazy restaurants now do, lump it all in together so the veggies have to eat vegan and gluten free and the vegans have to eat gluten free too). I will eat chicken, but even the choices of chicken are poor and often combine foods that I won't eat, like other meats.
The plus side is I'm saving lots of money. It does make life on trips away very difficult though.

Appleseesaw · 13/02/2022 14:01

Always look in advance. I take ages to decide and need to choose several options as at least one will always be unavailable on the day.

Bagadverts · 13/02/2022 14:01

I check menus to decide if I chose a restaurant. After that or if friends have chosen where we are going I just wait till I get there.

tigger1001 · 13/02/2022 14:02

@Bagadverts

This is me too.

Will check the menu to check that there is something for everyone going (house of fussy eaters) but won't chose what I want until I'm there. Don't know what I'll fancy until then
