Finally got to hold my spider! (Spider pics included)

This is my little jumping spider. It’s an L6 which means it has moulted 6 times and is nearing adult hood. It has beautiful green chelicerae (fangs) but we still don’t know if it’s a boy or girl yet.
I’ve had it since November and this is the first time I’ve been able to handle it. Look how cute!

Aww, little fuzzy cuteness.

Sunnysidegold · 12/02/2022 13:40

It is so tiny!!

picklemewalnuts · 12/02/2022 13:41

Why couldn't you handle it before? Too jumpy? Too small?

NiceTwin · 12/02/2022 13:42

How far does it jump?

Justme10 · 12/02/2022 13:44

I'm not a fan of spiders but can't help freaking myself out by looking at pictures of them Grin Will it stay that small?

EvilPea · 12/02/2022 13:44

Adorable!!!

EvilPea · 12/02/2022 13:45

We have a few living around the house. They are so nosey.

ClaraMumsnet · 12/02/2022 13:45

Jumping spiders are adorable. They always look so polite.

ISpyCobraKai · 12/02/2022 13:46

She's gorgeous, I'd worry my cats would break into a spider tank though!
My daughter has a snake and I love him which I never thought I'd say.

TimePoliceTeam236 · 12/02/2022 13:46

Oh that is cute 🥰

Soubriquet · 12/02/2022 13:47

I couldn’t handle it before because it wouldn’t let me. Kept running away or hiding in it’s hammock. It will get bigger. Not much more but will moult once maybe twice more.

It jumps a little to us but lots for him. You know he’s going to jump because he lays an anchor point with his butt and then you see him jump with some butt rope attached. I say him because it feels nicer than it Grin

I got a lovely video earlier of him washing his face like a cat does Grin

Beautiful,
Owning reptiles and spiders has opened up a whole new world, a unique experiance and so interesting.

Soubriquet · 12/02/2022 13:57

It’s certainly helped my phobia towards them. I’m no where near as frightened now and even dd has calmed down with it. She attempted to hold my spider but he didn’t want to be held by her. He either wouldn’t go on her finger or scurried straight off her hand back on to mine but it’s a big step for her to even do that.

Jumping spiders are the cutest spiders. Will you name it?

picklemewalnuts · 12/02/2022 13:58

I could be converted by a spider like that! He's adorable!

picklemewalnuts · 12/02/2022 13:59

What does a jumping spider need? Tank? Heater? What do they eat?

I've never been frightened of spiders, but I'm utterly petrified of slugs.

You know he’s going to jump because he lays an anchor point with his butt and then you see him jump with some butt rope attached.

Does that mean if he makes a bid for freedom you can haul him back in by his own butt rope?

zen1 · 12/02/2022 14:02

Love his little fangs!

Ylfa · 12/02/2022 14:03

Beautiful! Recovered arachnophobe here (thanks London zoo) 👏

Soubriquet · 12/02/2022 14:09

Yes. You can haul them back by their butt rope Grin

He’s called Artemis (after the goddess of hunt). I’m hoping it will be a female. If not, it will probably be shortened to Artie.

They need an enclosure, a water mister (to mist everyday), an LED light. They need 12 hours of bright light a day. A heat mat if your house gets under 23 degrees.

He currently eats fruit flies but they are getting small so I’ve ordered in some juicy house flies. They can eat those, crickets, locusts, wax worms and meal worms.

This isn’t the clearest of pictures but you can see his fangs in this. A beautiful emerald green. If he’s a boy, they will stay green or go gold. If he’s a girl, they will go pink, purple, green, gold, basically any colour. Girls are the colour hogs Grin

I'm scared of spiders. But he's cute!

ladydimitrescu · 12/02/2022 14:17

He's smiling and I love him

Tippexy · 12/02/2022 14:17

If you hope it will be a girl then default to she instead of he! Smile

She’s a cutie.
