Please can I have some help...

I am going to fill a jar up with some quotes, advice, tips, life hacks, confidence boosters (you name it!) for my teenage children. My daughter has asked for one and I'd like to do it for all my children (might even do one for myself!). I've seen some excellent posts on here about advice and things that were said to you in your childhood/teenage years that were positive for you and stuck with you through life so please please please could I ask for you to share the best bits of advice or quotes from people which have helped you navigate through life. Thank you!

It's not a quote, but rather a concept from Japanese culture - kintsugi. I think it kind of applies to life too.

And another: believe in positive intent. I used to overthink a lot of things and get annoyed by decisions others made but this made me take a breather and think that most people are doing what they believe to be right.

These are great to read- they need making into a book!
I think someone had that idea a few ago but not sure if it ever happened...

My Nans mantra:

Always buy a good bed and a good pair of shoes because if you're not in one you're in the other.

TheOnlyMrsW · 09/02/2022 12:59

I've always liked "we rise by lifting others"

I'd been thinking about that too - it's a beautiful way of looking at life.

I love that. Do you know where it comes from?
gingerhills · 09/02/2022 13:33

@NETSRIK

I found some I saved on Pinterest which I like.

You can't be bitter and expect your life to be sweet

Invest in people who invest in you

Stop saying yes to shit you hate

The best things in life aren't things

Don't believe everything you think

Be a little more you and a lot less them.

You won't be distracted by comparison if you are distracted by purpose.

Be picky with your clothes, friends and time.

I love 'You won't be distracted by comparison if you are distracted by purpose.'

That's so true and so wise.

AddictedtoCrunchies · 09/02/2022 14:28

Never look down on someone unless you're helping them up.

petalblossom · 09/02/2022 15:03

We are not troubled by events but by the meanings we give to them

What begins in anger ends in shame

It's the same life whether we spend it crying or laughing

My favourite -
"Youth is where you left it and that's where it should stay. Anything that was worth taking on life's journey you will have already taken with you" ... it always helps me when I have regrets about that past. You can't take any more from the past what you already have, and you certainly can't go back in time.

Haribosweets · 09/02/2022 15:06

Haven't read all the comments so apologies if been mentioned. Never Assume because you an A$$ out of You and Me. I got told this by a senior manager in my 1st job at 17 and always stuck in my head.

SingingSands · 09/02/2022 15:19

The time will pass anyway so you might as well start now.

(In relation to putting off starting a project/training - if you wait 3 months you can either still be in the same place or you can start now and have made progress/completed it/achieved something in 3 months.)

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 09/02/2022 15:21

What is for you won’t go by you

Don’t get mad get curious (so this is a if you fuck up, forgive yourself and work out why)

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 09/02/2022 15:22

And don’t buy things buy experiences

Sausagedogsarethebest · 09/02/2022 15:38

Simple Formula For Living

Live beneath your means
Return everything you borrow
Stop blaming other people
Admit it when you make a mistake
Give clothes not worn to charity
Do something nice and try to not get caught
Listen more; talk less
Take a 30 min walk every day
Strive for excellence, not perfection
Be kind to unkind people
Take time to be alone
Cultivate good manners
Be humble
Realise and accept that life isn't fair
Know when to keep your mouth shut
Learn from the past, plan for the future
Live in the present
Don't sweat the small stuff
It's all small stuff

AThroneOfLies · 09/02/2022 16:01

Think this one is especially appropriate for teens

‘When you are browsing through these images on social media just remember that real life is in your heart, your smile, your family, your surroundings. Pictures online will make you believe you are not enough, like you need to do something more, more exciting, more physically beautiful, bigger than you are. It’s a lie, a net of fleeting fantasy.
You are real, you are beautiful, you are enough. Go Be in the world and stop comparing yourself to others peoples selfies’

AThroneOfLies · 09/02/2022 16:02

Needs can always be met but greed can never be fulfilled.

AThroneOfLies · 09/02/2022 16:05

‘After a period of sadness, happiness doesn’t just jump back into your life.
It grows back slowly in the crevices of your soul, like small plants that sprout in cracked concrete; it creeps softly up to you until eventually it’s walking by your side, so quietly you barely even notice’

Neurodiversitydoctor · 09/02/2022 16:15

Doing nothing is still a decision.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 09/02/2022 17:41

For everybody: "Don't sweat the petty things"

Specifically for teenagers: "Don't pet the sweaty things" Grin

SilenceOfThePrams · 09/02/2022 18:17

'Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen nineteen and six, result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds ought and six, result misery. - Charles Dickens in David Copperfield. Live within your means and save something, even if it seems too small to matter.

And

You are enough. Just as you are. Don’t believe anyone who says you aren’t.

gingerhills · 10/02/2022 13:48

Don’t get mad get curious - I really like this. I've heard versions of this but nothing so succinct.

If people didn't make mistakes, they wouldn't put rubbers on pencils.
