I went to B&Q to buy some clear silicone but they only had the white stuff. I meant to go quickly in order to avoid the forecasted rain but got chatting to a neighbour and failed to miss the rain.

Went for a walk with a friend on Friday and it was very muddy so my walking shoes are absolutely covered in mud. I have put them in a bag and moved them to the back door so that I can clean them with my boot buddy. Otherwise, they would have stayed in the porch until I needed them at which point I would remember that they should have been cleaned.

Helena, the Superbowl (always capitalized) is the annual championship match between American football teams. It's preceded by a series of playoff matches to determine who gets to play. It's a big deal here. The game is being played in California, so it starts at 3:30 PM there, which will be 6:30 for me and 11:30 in the UK.

Our spring-like weather is now gone and we're back to snow. The roads are warm enough that it's mostly melting when it hits, which is good, as I have to run out to the supermarket for a few things.

There is very little chance for me to get my boots muddy - asphalt as far as the eye can see, so no need for me to use a buddy. Still freezing outside. We had our rice / vegetable dish.
It is about a fourtnight until lent starts. There is no fun in eating pancakes when we have to eat them seperately at our desks. I'd rather do without, as it is not about the food but about community.
(I and several cousins will be 60 this year - no chance of a family reunion either - not even for a small celebration as we are more than 10)

ShoesOnFirstThenCar · 13/02/2022 16:23

Hello everyone, can I please join this lovely thread? I’ve been lurking for the last two and now feel I ought to start contributing.
We are big followers of the NFL in this house and watch the regular season, but we’re too cheap to pay for the special channel so missed the play offs etc. Superbowl is on terrestrial tv but very late so I’ll be asleep I hope! DH is a big Steelers fan, so by extension so am I 😁.
@Lemonsandlemonade I don’t think I am too far from you, here to add to the Welsh contingent on the thread.
@Silkierabbit hope the silkie settles ok in its new spot and rabbit and silkiecat and chicken all get along famously.
@sueelleker so sorry about your DH, though at least he’s at peace now.

I haven’t got much to add (as per the spirit of the thread), have been out for a spin in the car this pm to distract DD (autistic) as she can get a bit stir crazy, had to turn around at one point because a tree had fallen down blocking then road, the river was also crazy high due to all the rain.

Sorry I haven’t tagged more people, I love reading all your news.

MissConductUS · 13/02/2022 16:43

Welcome, @ShoesOnFirstThenCar, and thanks so much for delurking and sharing your news! Of course you can join the thread, it's lovely to have you do so. How did you become fans of American football? My husband told me that when he lived in London ages ago there was a one-hour program on television once a week showing American football highlights.

DH has just presented me with a dozen roses (red and pink) and a heart shaped ballon that says "I Love You". Grin He picked them up from the florist while I was at the supermarket. They close at six tomorrow and he wasn't sure if he could get there tomorrow in time to pick them up, so I get them today.

The roads were just wet, but we'll have to clear the deck and some of the driveway once it stops snowing. I still need to work on the taxes today.

Nydj, did you make the brownies yet?

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 13/02/2022 16:57

Oh yes, you celebrate Valentine's day. Only last night I listened to excerpts of Pepys Diary on audible, where he talkes about their way to celebrate this day.
Here this day was introduced by American GI's and of course soon taken over by the flower selling industries. I remember when the first ads apperared.

My football team has just won against a Berlin team - not the one my boss supports.

Lemonsandlemonade · 13/02/2022 18:21

Hello Shoes! Another Welsh contingent? Do you speak actual Welsh?

Thanks for the kind messages.

Doing DS nursery forms. 😳

American Football seems to be growing in popularity in UK.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 13/02/2022 18:30

If I had to choose between American Football and Rugby - I'd choose Rugby any time. Not that I understand what they are doing.

Nursery - I have last week shreddered the paperwork. We had to submit proof of income and proof of time needed (including commute) to the relevant department and find a nursery place. Now the forms are online.

HelenaJustina · 13/02/2022 18:44

The baptism was lovely, though the drive back was busy and v rainy, the spray on the m25 was horrendous. But now, very much in the spirit of the thread, I’m sitting quietly in a car outside DC2’s swim training.

IWanderedLonely · 13/02/2022 18:46

It's rained here all day. We wrapped up and had a walk into town, got a coffee and had a look how full the river is. We live up in the hills at the source of the river, so it's just a stream here. I can report it was very full & fast-flowing.
I put up some fairylights around the mirror above our mantlepiece.

ShoesOnFirstThenCar · 13/02/2022 19:28

@Lemonsandlemonade I do speak actual Welsh yes, though bit rusty these days I can turn it on dragging it from the depths of my brain somewhere! Went to Welsh medium schools.
@MissConductUS DH used to watch with his Dad when he was younger and kind of pulled me in to it. I actually quite enjoy. There is a weekly highlights show on but it’s a fairly recent one the one we watch. There used to be one on a different channel years ago tho which is probably the one your DH knows.
Grew up watching rugby tho @Prokupatuscrakedatus as had a dad and two brothers who played.
@IWanderedLonely lights around the mirror sounds lovely

Silkierabbit · 13/02/2022 19:45

Welcome Shoes I also have an asd child though past the age of driving him round in the car though still useful for getting him to talk.

That's lovely of your DH MissC

DH is just making our Sunday roast dinner. All is well with the animals though feeling increasingly like we like in Beatrix Potters cottage with our own Jemima Puddleduck and Peter Rabbit and a cat as well. Tried on new swimming costume as need a post surgery one and it fits. A few things packed for Scotland.

Nydj · 13/02/2022 20:19

Oh yes, Miss, we made the brownies yesterday afternoon. I had to go out shortly after they came out of the oven so asked DH to put them in the fridge to set a bit. When I came home, they were in the fridge with a corner cut out that DS had eaten but the rest was left intact as apparently, only I know what size pieces they should be cut into 🤷‍♀️.

I admit to cutting them into smaller pieces in the past to try and reduce DS’s sugar intake but found that he just had more pieces in each sitting.

Happy Valentines Day for those who are marking the day tomorrow and hugs to those who are not able to mark it in the way they would wish.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 13/02/2022 20:49

I am watching a crime / comedy series based on the Kluftiger books - slightly in dialect (Allgäu) on Netflix.

halfpasteleven · 13/02/2022 20:56

Your DH sounds v thoughtful Miss C.
When I was getting DD (2) off to sleep my DP texted to say he was going to the shop.
When he got back I asked him what he got and he mumbled mushrooms..
We most definitely do not need mushrooms.. I did a grocery shop this morning and got them then...
When I asked why he got them he said he thought we were low on them.
It's only now as I lie in bed in peace (pms - rotten headache and cramps) that I've realised he went for a valentines card & gift..

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 13/02/2022 21:28

Halfpast Smile

MissConductUS · 14/02/2022 00:35

Halfpast, that is funny. Please report back tomorrow, and I hope you feel better soon. I'm picturing a line of forgetful husbands, looking for a shop open on a Sunday night.

We had our weekly Zoom call with the kids and my MIL. There was good news from my son. The firm that's offered him a job when he graduates has sent him a form to fill out to indicate his work location and start date preferences. He's told them that he prefers to work remotely and start in the beginning of September, so it looks like he'll be home in New York and not looking for a cheap flat in Boston. Grin

One reason he selected the September start date is that he needs to get 12 additional university credit hours beyond what he'll graduate with to take his accounting certification exam. He can do them online, but that would be difficult while working full time, so he'll do them from home over the summer.

The cats will be thrilled to have him back. He's one of their favorite servants. Smile

mathanxiety · 14/02/2022 05:14

MissC she made fettucine alfredo (with a lot of garlic) and we had rotisserie chicken tossed with the pasta. I had mushrooms and peas with mine. Everyone else hates both. Smile halfpast - I would have fallen for that too, and would have welcomed the extra mushrooms...

It's freezing here after a brief warmup, but we're to have another warm day on Wednesday. Warm weather means slush puddles of inestimable depth. I need to get a car wash to clear the road salt off the car.

MissConductUS · 14/02/2022 14:42

Happy Valentines Day! DH gave me a box of Godiva chocolates and a lovely card this morning. Smile

I am still a bit over the moon that DS will be moving back after graduation. I was dreading moving him into a dodgy flat in Boston, four hours away. He's also helpful around the house and does a lot of the cooking with DH.

Math, it's absolutely freezing again here too. We had steak and chicken on the grill last night with some leftover mac & cheese.

I sent a couple of messages today to some special friends to say Happy Galentines Day, but today I’m doing my best to stay cosy on my sofa under a blanket that’s probably the only thing I’d grab in a fire as my mum knitted it for me. 💝

Sunbird24 · 14/02/2022 16:23

Yesterday I meant, that was Galentines/Palentines! Grin

Silkierabbit · 14/02/2022 16:25

Glad you will have your DS back MissC and the cats will have the correct number of servants again.

Happy Valentine's Day everyone. This day in 2005 I was meant to be in Bruges staying in a hotel with DH but it got cancelled as got called into do IVF and I told them I was only cancelling the trip if it was guaranteed I got pregnant. I got DD from it. This Valentines has been spent speaking to oncology and my Valentines present from oncology is a Prosigna test (UK oncotype test) paid for by NHS. At £3k that is by far the biggest Valentine's Day present I have ever had. I was told I needed to agree to chemo after it if came out high but can actually decide after and also I only need this test as doctor took 4.5 months to refer so do not feel guilty whatever I do. Results on 28th. Oncologist is expecting them to come back low and said 6 out of 100 women benefit from chemo and 94 do not and very unlikely to be in 6 as lobular cancer which is known to be a poor responder to chemo. Chemo would also not be 6 months with no holidays as said before but either 3 months (think doxy x 4) or 18 weeks (3 EC and 3 doxy??) with similar success rates but said the shorter one is more controversial but she thinks its fine. She said it was fine to holiday in UK or France as long as close to a hospital but I may well feel rubbish. She said she expects test result to come back low and thinks its very borderline on chemo and likely no benefit.

The lawyers came back cannot take case on as hard to prove 4.5 month delay caused different outcome, think issue is they are no win, no fee lawyers. It clearly does give a worse outcome but maybe the year or so from life expectancy isn't enough for their costs. Interesting to see what's involved though. I still have other lawyers but they said I needed to get nhs to say exactly what damage delay had caused and that won't happen.

Sunbird24 · 14/02/2022 16:33

Glad they’ve agreed to pay for the test Silkie, hope the results come back on time and give a clear way forward

Makiwa · 14/02/2022 17:33

Happy Valentine's day to all those who celebrate Flowers. DH had the day off so we headed into Paris and lunched not too far from Place de la République. We followed this with a quick visit to La Samaritaine which is a newly refurbished department store where we had a drink and admired the wonderful art nouveau decor.

I hope that everyone who watched the Superbowl enjoyed themselves. Twinkling lights and settling down on the sofa sounds wonderful.

That is such good news Silkie. You must feel so cheered up by hearing that today.

Thanks Sunbird and Makiwa. Our wedding list from 20 odd years ago is still with Samiritaine, they closed down when we still had a few hundred euros left on it, doubt we will ever see that again but could try Grin I nearly took it all in fluffy socks, should have done in retrospect. MIL made us put about 10,000 plates on the list as she's a good cook and has a 10 bedroomed house and we got about 100 of them (not used any of them) but the rest are still there or where 15 years ago when they shut or so. We could not reach them as only a freephone number from France when shut.
