What would you wear on a business flight?

A few of my colleagues (including my boss) and I are going to a conference in the US. We're all flying together and I've never met these guys before. I was going to in what I call "smart joggers" and a nice cable knit jumper and a coat.y DH thinks this is beyond casual and should about wearing something else. I'm all about looking smart but it's a transatlantic flight and comfort to me is paramount. Do you think I'll look too dressed down?

This is one of the sets I have...I have black, navy and cream. LOVE THEM!!

Black leggings, and a long smart jumper surely?

HermioneWeasley · 05/02/2022 17:05

I’d wear the joggers. Comfort and warmth are most important on a LH flight

I’d just wear jeans but I usually do on long haul

ChristmasFluff · 05/02/2022 17:09

I'd go for leggings rather than joggers too - and they stop your ankles/calves going puffy too.

Definitely layers - if you are too cold, you'll have bedding you can put over you, but if you are too hot you'll be stuck.

I'd probably wear posh back leggings with a longline top/short stretch dress with a snuggly cardigan for layering. Smart coat/blazer to dress it up off the plane.

Or wide legged Jersey trousers with a stretch waistband and comfortable layers on top.

Definitely layering options.

Both pairs of M&S trousers linked on here are disgusting. I tried those ones with the seam down the front once. They went straight back. I think the joggers are better, or what about bamboo trousers from Thought?

BitterTits · 05/02/2022 17:12

This sort of thing.

Cuffed trousers arent always good on flights, if your feet swell or you dont get up much they can cut into your lower legs.

Pinkginlover · 05/02/2022 17:19

Leggings, longline top/shirt ,long cardigan or a wrap and flat pumps or smart trainers.
I personally wouldn't wear jogging bottoms.

Thek possibility of losing your luggage shouldn't be ignored. My husband went to a four day conference in Italy and his luggage arrived just in time for him to get on the flight home. Fortunately he had travelled in a suit.

If you are flying to the south west of the US it is going to be hot when you land. I would wear cropped leggings or stretchy trousers and some smart ish slingbacks with a smart tshirt and nice cardigan for arriving at the airport and making a good first impression. Then in the bathrooms in the lounge, change into a track suit for the plane (your colleagues will all be v envious) with a pair of socks and trainers (that you will probably want for the trip anyway). Stash your smarter stuff carefully in your hand luggage and then change back into it before you land. That way you will be cooler when you land and if you go straight to dinner, you wont have to worry. Given my knowledge of these trips, everyone is going to go straight to dinner and have a drink and then go back and crash in their room, otherwise the jet lag will hit and no one will make it to dinner at all.
If you pack a small wash bag for the plane (everything travel sizes) you can wash your face, brush your hair and clean your teeth before landing too. The amenity kit they give you in business has a few bits in it, but its much nicer to have your own.
I would also suggest compression socks for long haul (you can get black ones on amazon) and I always take my own small fleece blanket as the temp on a plane can go up and down hugely and i find them much better than the airline ones.
Also pack sunglasses in your hand luggage, you will want them as soon as you leave the airport if its day time.

I used to travel LHR-LAX for work quite a lot and always wore something casual on the plane, even when travelling with colleagues, and often changed into the free pjs if it was a night flight and I wasn’t going to sit at the bar. Everyone did the same, even senior managers 🤷🏻‍♀️ Company was fairly corporate but not a full suit-job.

KenAdams · 05/02/2022 18:03

Lululemon aligns. If you're thinking wtf how much I guarantee you they won't be the only ones you ever buy, they are amazing.

I pair with an oversized Zara jumper. Still looks smart enough but comfy.

Mo1911 · 05/02/2022 18:04

Not joggers in any situation, including taking the bins out!

Bortles · 05/02/2022 18:05

Id wear a jersey dress with long sleeves, knee length. Comfy shoes. Maybe a pashmina if aircon cold. Joggers for me are for the house only. Dog wwalk maybe if you're not seeing anyone!

Movinghouseatlast · 05/02/2022 18:32

I have never seen anyone stay in business dress throughout a flight, but I have seen plenty of people change into and out of cashmere joggers and cardigan for a flight.

I saw a guy once change into full business dress then ask for a beer which he downed in one ( at 6 am!) before rushing off the plane obviously on his way to a meeting.

You know there is really no need to be quite so rude
BIWI · 05/02/2022 18:43

At least no-one has mentioned a 'crisp white t-shirt' this time Grin

Thanks, why post that.
Ontopofthesunset · 05/02/2022 19:08

When I flew long haul I used to wear wide leg jersey trousers very like the M&S ones with a T-shirt and cardigan or front zipping top that could be taken on and off easily as the cabin temperature changed. Jeans are far too tight for a long haul flight. Jersey is very forgiving in terms of crumpling.

PermanentlyTired03 · 05/02/2022 20:24

I'd always wear a casual dress & tights or gym leggings and a tshirt & jumper on a long haul flight. Al about comfort. I used to travel long haul regularly for work pre-covid and none of my Colleagues cared what each other wore. You are on the flight not in a meeting room!

CecilyTheWake · 05/02/2022 20:28

A crisp white shirt, a smart jean and a (one) smart trainer was recommended in the last thread, I think. 😂
