Hi
Our baby girl is 5 days old and me and my husband love the name Alba. We like that there won’t be 5 in her class, that it’s easy to pronounce and spell- however, when I have said it to people they have said Albie? Or Albert? Or asked me to repeat it… I don’t want to saddle my daughter with a lifetime of it?
Do you think it’s a good name choice ?
Her sister is Willow.

Treecreature · 05/02/2022 10:22

I wouldn't pair it with willow.

Taytocrisps · 05/02/2022 10:23

For me it's the name of a country so I wouldn't name my child Alba, any more than I would name him/her France or Germany or Italy.

But look, if you like it, then go for it. People will always find reasons to dismiss or criticize a a name.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 05/02/2022 10:33

I know an Albany.

The parents aren't SNP members and certainly aren't racist.

I think its an ugly name 🙄

Lessstressedhemum · 05/02/2022 10:37

As others have said, it only means Scotland if you pronounce it "Alupa" kind of swallowing the last a so it's half way between an a and an u sound.

It's Latin for white and Spanish for dawn. I think it's beautiful.

Eyesofdisarray · 05/02/2022 10:40

It's a lovely name 🙂

SirChenjins · 05/02/2022 10:43

No, it means Scotland Grin

It’s like calling your daughter Cymru but saying that if you pronounce it Ky-m-roo it doesn’t mean Wales.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 05/02/2022 10:54

I like it. It doesn’t mean Scotland to me, I wasn’t aware of the connection till this thread .

Like calling your child India or one of the many other names that are also places or countries. It's quite a common thing to do. Lots of Harlows around, Preston, Jordan. In Cyprus Kypros is a common name which is literally Greek for Cyprus.
SartresSoul · 05/02/2022 11:14

I had an Alba TV in the 90s, it always makes me think of that.

SirChenjins · 05/02/2022 11:19

Absolutely - but my point was in response to a pp who said it only means Scotland if you pronounce it "Alupa", which patently not true. Of course it can also be used as a name (like India etc) just as any word can be used as a name, but that doesn’t negate the fact that it means Scotland, dawn or white - just as Cymru means Wales as per my post.

ExtremelyDelighted · 05/02/2022 11:20

I'd be wondering about the Scottish connection (I know it means Scotland and I'm in SE England) and would be a bit wary of the political party link now too.

InisnaBro · 05/02/2022 11:20

@Notdoingthis

It is rhe Spanish word for Dawn and quite popular in Spain.
Yes, I know two, and both have a Spanish parent. I like it.

To be fair most of the Albas I know pre date the political party as do most of the Alexas with the device. A bit unfortunate I suppose (more so for Alexa) but you'd be hard pressed to find a name not associated with SOMETHING, be it a brand or a country, town, in DD's case an unfortunate song. Even my decidedly dull, ordinary, not particularly popular name has a brand association.
Luredbyapomegranate · 05/02/2022 11:44

I quite like it.

I think it’s getting quite popular, so I wouldn’t worry about people not getting it.

I prefer Aphra, Astra or Aster, all of which are more unusual.

sorryforswearing · 05/02/2022 11:44

Sorry my first thought was the Alba record player I once had.

BonnesVacances · 05/02/2022 11:46

Alba is a nice name. I think of the Spanish version.

Figgygal · 05/02/2022 11:48

This came up a few days ago actually so might be more popular at the moment than you expect
I love it but with all the connotations of cheap electronics brand and scottish independence id not use it

Shade17 · 05/02/2022 12:11

It’s a brand of really shit consumer electronics.

BringBackThinEyebrows · 05/02/2022 12:27

@StripeyDeckchair

Isn't Alba a cheap radio/ TV brans from some store?

It's a NO from me

Yes I had an Alba radio from Argos. My immediate thought when I saw the thread title.
RobertaFirmino · 05/02/2022 13:05

Makes me think of the albino orangutan from Orangutan Jungle School

In fairness, I know a woman called Caledonia! Smile
OverByYer · 05/02/2022 13:12

I think its lovely, I first heard of it when I read the Time Travellers Wife. I know a 5 year old Alba and it really suits her.

SirChenjins · 05/02/2022 13:15

Wow - that’s a name and a half you don’t hear that often! Smile Does she has Scottish connections?

SirChenjins · 05/02/2022 13:15

Sorry, that to @ShadowPuppets
