Hi
Our baby girl is 5 days old and me and my husband love the name Alba. We like that there won’t be 5 in her class, that it’s easy to pronounce and spell- however, when I have said it to people they have said Albie? Or Albert? Or asked me to repeat it… I don’t want to saddle my daughter with a lifetime of it?
Do you think it’s a good name choice ?
Her sister is Willow.

I know an Alba , I think it’s lovely . Her full name is the feminine of Albert, Albertine, which a French friend told me is quite an old fashioned name not used much now.

YaIz · 05/02/2022 02:31

Alba = Scotland to me.

Do you have Scottish heritage?

Notdoingthis · 05/02/2022 02:39

It is rhe Spanish word for Dawn and quite popular in Spain.

First thing I thought of was, short for Albatross. Oops.

KimikosNightmare · 05/02/2022 02:53

Alex Salmond.

Sorry, even without the association with Alex Salmond, it's not a euphonious name.

SequinnedShawl · 05/02/2022 03:01

It's a budget brand of TVs. Confused

threestars · 05/02/2022 03:17

I wasn't aware of the Scottish connection. To me, it's a beautiful place in Italy where I went on holiday once, and also the name of the daughter in The Time Traveller's Wife.
I like the name.

Pinkbonbon · 05/02/2022 03:41

Alex Salmond.

It means scotland in Gaelic. So I thibk you're a little bit reductory to only associate it with Alex salmon lol.
Pinkbonbon · 05/02/2022 03:43

I mean it's a cute name. But I wouldn't name my daughter it in the UK if we were not scottish. Or she will have people asking her her whole life what her scottish connections are lol

ticktockriojaoclock · 05/02/2022 03:53

It's literally the name of his political party!!

Yes because it means Scotland!
KimikosNightmare · 05/02/2022 04:01

It means Scotland in Gaelic but although in the 62 years I've lived in Scotland I've never once used it to refer to the country.

merrymelodies · 05/02/2022 04:02

I think Alba is a lovely name. I know that it also means "white".

ticktockriojaoclock · 05/02/2022 04:04

Pinkbonbon I am aware. But here in Scotland, the word Alba has been in most people's consciousness most recently because of Salmond, and it's worth pointing that out to the OP.

liveforsummer · 05/02/2022 05:19

I know a few Alba's. It's quite popular among the Spanish community here although I know of Scottish ones too. I can't say I even remembered about the political party. That wouldn't put me off. It's a lovely name.

My first thought too.
TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 05/02/2022 05:26

I love it!

LemonViolet · 05/02/2022 05:45

“La Casa de Bernarda Alba” is the first thing I thought of (it’s a classic Spanish play). Although Bernarda Alba herself isn’t the most sympathetic character, it’s a great play. All female cast written in the 1930s, ahead of its time really!

I think it’s a lovely name, I like Albertine though, that has a lot of options for nn - Alba, Albie, Bertie, Bina, Tina.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 05/02/2022 06:00

Oh I LOVE Albertine!

Geamhradh · 05/02/2022 06:02

In Italy it's short for Rosalba which is a bit old-fashioned but I like the Alba-Scotland connection (Alex S notwithstanding,)
It goes well with Willow.

garlictwist · 05/02/2022 06:13

It's Latin for white as well

WhatAWasteOfOranges · 05/02/2022 06:34

Love the name Alba, my 4 year old has a friend Alba. Reminds me of Alba from The House of Spirits. I believe it means Sunrise in Italian which is lovely.

daretodenim · 05/02/2022 07:03

@Letsallscreamatthesistene

Oh I LOVE Albertine!
I'm a fan of Albertina. Took me a while for it to grow on me but one of my favs now!

OP Alba is a lovely name. You could call your baby Jane or Leyla or Louise or Hailey or Jasmine or Sky or Emma and someone will always have a bad connotation with it. Always. Go for the name that speaks to you.

RobertSmithsLipstick · 05/02/2022 07:04

I really like it.

HacerSonarSusPasos · 05/02/2022 07:06

Yep, and I would feel a little uneasy about that.

How about Alma?
