What did you do for your 40th?

40th birthday is fast approaching, no idea what I want to do to celebrate.

Don't want a party.

Would quite like to be away somewhere. Options are a week away (with the DCs) or a weekend (either just DH and I or with the DCs too). No idea where to go, since lockdown i've turned into a bit of a hermit!

What would you do/did you do for yours?

We were planning on going away somewhere close but so the kids could finally go on a plane. Looking unlikely now with the bill rises.

For my 30th we went away on our own and stayed in a castle.

I don’t mind as long as it doesn’t involve a party.

A week in a Tikki Hut on Pamplelonne Plage. It was marvellous.

Peanut82 · 04/02/2022 10:50

I'll be on holiday with my partner and kids for my 40th

My husband booked a murder mystery night at a hotel. He got us costumes and everyone thought we were actors haha. It was a fab night and we won free drinks for our table for being the best(only ones in fancy dress)dressed. One table also thought my DH as the murderer.

We booked an apartment in Madrid. Loved it and the tapas bars, restaurants and places to visit are all within walking distance.

Mine was on lockdown, 2020 but they year after myself and DH went to a Michelin star Pub/restaurant and stayed overnight on one of their amazing rooms. It was crazy expensive, the full thing was about £700 but we had a great day and night. We sat outside and had drinks in the afternoon and then a lovely relaxing get ready in the room, a great meal and a long lazy breakfast. For me it was perfect. My DH has just turned 40 on Xmas day, so he had the usual Xmas and then we went to Centerparcs with friends over New Year as a treat for him.

An hours private lesson horse riding.
I had never even been in the same field as a horse before!
Thoroughly enjoyed it and crossed it off the bucket list.

GiantHaystacks2021 · 04/02/2022 11:16

Went to Russia.
No way would I throw a party, could not rely on flakey friends to show up and I wasn't shelling out cash just to be made a twat of.

One of the best decisions I've made in my life.

SmorgasBorb · 04/02/2022 11:18

Week in the Caribbean.
That was nice.

KellyMarieTunstall2 · 04/02/2022 11:22

I went on a cruise from Venice to Istanbul and then stayed in Venice for a few days. We had a our 2 year old with us too. No party, I couldn't face that. I had a lovely time.
I'm going to be 50 next year so I'm thinking about doing something special, so I'll be following your thread for ideas.

DappledThings · 04/02/2022 11:23

Nothing as I hate my birthday and refuse to acknowledge it. But if I did want to do something it would probably be glamping with DH and DC and a separate fancy dinner just the two of us

SpinsForGin · 04/02/2022 11:32

I had drinks at a friends where we all brought a celebrity wine to drink .... It's a bit of an in joke as one friend is obsessed with Gary Barlow's wine claiming it doesn't give you a hangover! My friends bought me some Jon Bon Jovi wine 😂

I also had lunch with family followed by an afternoon in the pub watching a band - on my actual birthday.

The week after I had a night out in our nearest city which involved lots of cocktails and dancing.

All of the above was organised by my DH and best friend.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 04/02/2022 11:42

we went to Rome for 5 days. Neither of us had been before, it was wonderful. My parents looked after the dc.

Strokethefurrywall · 04/02/2022 12:01

On the actual day, DH flew my sister and best friend out to surprise me (we live overseas), I had a massive party and then we went to Honduras to a rainforest eco lodge.

Absolutely epic, one of my favorite memories!

Suzi888 · 04/02/2022 12:04

Lockdown.
Sat in DH man cave (away from little DD) with Ryan Reynolds (movie, shameSad)😂 and a bottle of Prosecco.
So anything you do is going to beat that lol!

For my 30th I flew to Rome- that was amazing!

IDidntFloatUpTheLaganInABubble · 04/02/2022 12:08

Went to Amsterdam for 4 days without the DC was lovely

SandrasAnnoyingFriend · 04/02/2022 12:13

It was lockdown last Feb so I mostly sat at hone and felt pissed off. I'd always planned to do a big trip to mark it.
I've gone bigger this year and have a 3 day stay at Scarlett Hotel booked. Went with a celebration package so have lots included (massages, meals etc). It looks amazing so my birthday should be better this year.

Bex000 · 04/02/2022 12:15

Had a baby 3 weeks before my 40 th so sat on the sofa crying and cluster feeding!!! Thinking WTF has happened to my life.

onedayoranother · 04/02/2022 12:57

I wasn't yet married (or not yet had kids) and my future husband surprised me with a weekend at La Maison aux Quat Saison. It was AMAZING. I have never experienced such luxury. It was next level. We had a two level suite. The tasting menu was out if this world. My husband went to Oxford and showed me all his old haunts. It was an incredible weekend (and must have cost at least £5000).

TheWeeDonkey · 04/02/2022 13:08

I had a hysterectomy. I felt about 101 years old. I wouldn't recommend it honestly.

ISpyCobraKai · 04/02/2022 13:10

Went to see Harry Styles and had lunch in my favourite restaurant.
Exactly what I wanted.

CovidCorvid · 04/02/2022 13:12

Night in a travelodge and went to Chester zoo for the day! What can I say, I'm a cheap (ish) date! Grin

Hoolahoophop · 04/02/2022 13:32

Planning mine soon. Hoping for a big noisy family lunch and posh dinner with the DH while the kids stay with gp's. No party.

My the BF and now DH took me to le manison or for my 30th @onedayoranother was amazing.....though we got very, very tipsy on the wine tasting menu then stayed in a cheap hotel nearby. Our day in Oxford was a bit hungover!

SNUG2022 · 04/02/2022 13:45

Dh and I went on a European city break without the dc. I absolutely hated the destination, it felt really oppressive and not what I was expecting. I hated it! My 30th was great though Smile

MrsBerthaRochester · 04/02/2022 13:46

Rxdh gave me £40 so I got my hair done and we went to local pub for dinner. I couldnt have a party as he was a rude idiot who would refuse to speak to any of my friends. It was a shit day. We split later that year.
