What would a non binary teacher be addressed as?

dd’s school expects all teachers to be addressed as ‘sir’ or ‘miss’. She’s just asked me what a non binary teacher would be called. Any ideas?

Surely it would be better to ask the teacher themselves what they'd like to be called rather than asking on here

GemGEmGemster · 02/02/2022 19:00

I mean if they identify as neither gender

Siss? Mir?

DoubleYouOhEmAyEn · 02/02/2022 19:00

Good point..I like her thinking.

KindergartenKop · 02/02/2022 19:00

I saw a thing in a kids magazine where their teacher was non binary and called themselves 'Teacher Jones'.

SummerHouse · 02/02/2022 19:01

Good question!

Adatwistscientist · 02/02/2022 19:02

In my secondary it would have been "oi you!" If being polite or "oi, dickhead!" more usually.

Stompythedinosaur · 02/02/2022 19:02

You would ask them what they wanted to be called.

Soontobe60 · 02/02/2022 19:02

Pronouns - Miss, Mrs, Sir are based on a persons sex, and not gender.

GemGEmGemster · 02/02/2022 19:02

Actually, we just found this which has answered our question nonbinary.wiki/wiki/Gender_neutral_titles#:~:text=A%20gender%20neutral%20title%20is,first%20or%20last%20name%20only.

That would be so much better for everyone. I hate being called Miss, but the alternates are usually worse Grin
AdaColeman · 02/02/2022 19:04

Mx?

TickleMyPickle · 02/02/2022 19:04

At my child’s school, they call the teacher MX ( pronounced Mux)

SuckIt · 02/02/2022 19:04

Mx

So Mx Smith

GemGEmGemster · 02/02/2022 19:06

And yes, obviously one would ask the person in question how they wanted to be addressed. It was a hypothetical conversation. There is no teacher. Yet. We’re both just trying to understand about different gender identifications.

This is obviously untrue, it is perfectly normal to use a person's preferred pronouns and titles in all walks of life.

Do they say it with a straight face?

Good Lord it’s all very complicated isn’t it?

KimmyKimdoo · 02/02/2022 19:08

Well I’m Mrs Kimdoo but I always get called Miss. I’ve never been asked for my pronouns but the students, ever. They just called me Miss upon sight. I think they’d get either Sir or Miss depending on what the students assumed their title to be. I would always prefer my actually name and dislike Miss but that’s not how it works in schools really. They could try and insist on Mx or something but probably on the whole they’d get called Miss or Sir.

Sarahplane · 02/02/2022 19:08

My dd has a non binary teacher. Their title is Mx, referred to as Mx surname

Ylfa · 02/02/2022 19:10

Miss is not the equivalent of Sir. It just can’t be. It doesn’t sound remotely close in terms of the respect or deference or whatever Sir commands.

sadpapercourtesan · 02/02/2022 19:11

How do you pronounce Mx?!

I’d presume that the teacher would let the class know what they want to be called (as I can’t think of one!)
