If you're 33 (or thereabouts), how much do you make?

Just came back to the workforce from a long career break to have DC.

I'm almost 34 and on £50k. It's London, so it feels like it doesn't go very far here.

I just feel a bit stuck and well behind where I should be, but I guess that's what happens when you take time out to be a sahm?

Curious to know where others my age are at.

33
£43k south west, surely as we could do totally different jobs that won’t be very helpful?

RobinPenguins · 02/02/2022 14:40

I made £48k when I was 33 but that was before taking mat leave. North east in a city, public sector. It’s gone up a little since then so I make about that now for a 4 day week.

Camomila · 02/02/2022 14:42

The median full time wage for London was 39k in 2021, so you are earning more than most women your age OP.

I'm 34 and earn less than you, I think my highest earning female friends are probably earning in the mid-high 40ks (hospital doctor and LA solicitor)

BillyAndTheSillies · 02/02/2022 14:47

£32k in London. But took a huge cut to go part time. Pre DC was on 75k at 27 - but the job just wasn't compatible with family life. I took voluntary redundancy when I returned after May leave. Sad that I gave it up now as could have been on a totally different track financially now.

TrufflesAndToast · 02/02/2022 14:49

You’re 33, had a ‘long’ career break and are disappointed you’re only on £50k. Righto Confused

KStockHERO · 02/02/2022 14:49

I'm 35 and make £54K - I'm an academic
My DP is 36 and makes £84K - he's also an academic but runs a company too

We're not London based so it goes a lot further.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 02/02/2022 14:50
  1. £9.50ph. I am not ambitious though and have never desired a "career" as such.
TheTempest · 02/02/2022 14:51

I’m on £34k at 34 and was thinking I was doing pretty well until I read this 😂 I have one DC and had a year off with her.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 02/02/2022 14:51

I don't know anyone my age who earns more than £30k except my ex husband.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 02/02/2022 14:52

And he drives trains so it wasn't from years of studying and hard work either.

TheRoundOne · 02/02/2022 14:56

I am 33, £53k, no career breaks though so I think you are doing well!

😂😂 this!

Sorry op, it does whiff of a humble brag and I live just outside London in a naice commuter town

flowflexflop · 02/02/2022 15:00

33 and just over 40k - teaching since I graduated at 22.

flowflexflop · 02/02/2022 15:00

Not in London

amusedbush · 02/02/2022 15:01

DH and I will both be 32 in the spring, we're in the central belt of Scotland. He is on about £20k, I am currently on a £15k (tax free) stipend as I'm doing a funded PhD but even when I worked full-time, I never earned more than £25k. We have a house, a car and (pre-covid) nice holidays so I can't complain.

I wish I hadn't opened this thread though Blush

OnlyYellowRoses · 02/02/2022 15:07

33 and on £22,800 a year. I was thrilled when I landed this role, it's the highest I've ever earned but looking at some of these salaries I feel a bit flat now

morningstruggles · 02/02/2022 15:08

For those saying they feel bad reading this thread.

I'm 30, on 47k (in the midlands) and am still recovering from the mental breakdown I had last year from the stress of my job........

It's not always worth it.

Onatree · 02/02/2022 15:09

Just turned 37, and on 72.3k.

Same! I'm 34 and would be on £37k a year if I was full time (but I'm part time with two DDs).

Onatree · 02/02/2022 15:10

@Onatree

Just turned 37, and on 72.3k.
But forgot to say particularly lucky as absolutely love my institution and profession.
BlowDryRat · 02/02/2022 15:11

34 and earning just shy of £100k in London. To put that in context, my pre-tax pay for January was more than my entire annual salary when I worked PT after having DC1 and 2. As soon as I went back to FT it was easy to shimmy up the career ladder. Just shows how women are screwed when it comes to being the primary caregiver.

nappingnappingnapping · 02/02/2022 15:43

33 in a month, on £37kish. Not looked in a while...

I live in semi rural Scotland and I would say I am reasonably comfortable. But we are both big savers and don't tend to spend much. We have 2 children (I am currently on mat leave). Not sure whether I will stay full time or not when my mat leave ends.

BertieBotts · 02/02/2022 15:46

Nothing.

I think about 10k a year was my top earnings ever Confused

rhowton · 02/02/2022 15:48

I'm 32 and earn £56k. I've just had back to back maternity and work 4 days a week.
