If you're 33 (or thereabouts), how much do you make?

emilyintheSE · 02/02/2022 14:08

Just came back to the workforce from a long career break to have DC.

I'm almost 34 and on £50k. It's London, so it feels like it doesn't go very far here.

I just feel a bit stuck and well behind where I should be, but I guess that's what happens when you take time out to be a sahm?

Curious to know where others my age are at.

This.
Same here. We have a modest house, 2 cars, holidays (until covid) and a little one and felt pretty well off until reading this thread Shock

littleselda · 02/02/2022 20:24

36 and on 100k + bonus
I took about 3 years out for kids and just went back recently
I work in IT though and the job market is extremely hot

MiloAndEddie · 02/02/2022 20:35

33, Midlands, £78k

Had two maternity leaves in 3 years but did return earlier from my second for a big promotion while my DH was a SAHD.

Like a previous poster it doesn’t feel like an important job for the money if I’m honest. Most people probably wouldn’t even know what it was!

TedMullins · 02/02/2022 20:54

It does sound like you’re entitled and possibly living beyond your means. Some parts of London are much more expensive than others.

ChocolateHoneycomb · 02/02/2022 20:59

38
£70K
Would be £85K if worked full time

CleanUpTime · 02/02/2022 21:01

32, 45k

No more dc to be had. So now focusing on my next career move

BottlingBurpsForGrandma · 02/02/2022 21:08

I'm 33 and earn £10500 (£21k but I'm part time). I'm very happy with the level of earning vs the responsibilities I have to be honest. The charity I work for are great and it's a very supportive environment. I am proud of the work I do.

For full disclosure, I know I am very lucky to be able to weigh up my job on more than just the money. We married very young so got on the housing ladder early and had an inheritance along the way, so neither of us need to bust a gut to earn more at work. We also live in a fairly inexpensive area.

Newjobformoremoney · 02/02/2022 21:18

I am 36, earn 105k plus bonus (which is a profit share) and shares.
I’ve recently moved jobs for less money and less stress.
I don’t think it’s a problem asking about money. I think women should talk more about what they earn and it shouldn’t be a dirty taboo subject. It keeps women as lower earners not asking for salary increases.
I’m based in London

Lostmyway86 · 02/02/2022 21:19

34 and earn £38k in London but wfh mostly now thanks to covid which has helped with arranging childcare for 2 young DC.

Hdhr8jsj · 02/02/2022 21:21

You know that some people live off CB/UC/PIP/Carers allowance, right?

Some people live off a few £100. So yes, at your age you are doing well.

OhWhyNot · 02/02/2022 21:37

£50k is higher than average in London. I earn quite a bit less and have a child we can still have an ok life (also rent)

Jessica60 · 02/02/2022 21:39

@AperolWhore

36 and on 55k basic plus 20-30k bonuses paid quarterly.
Wow, what job is that?
Bushkin · 02/02/2022 21:45

35 150-220k depending on bonuses

Ftm229 · 02/02/2022 21:58

34k, age 31. Some amazing salaries here!!

00100001 · 02/02/2022 22:17

Fairly sure there's some fibbing going on...

Mandofan · 02/02/2022 23:06

I don’t think the OP is entitled. It sounds mad but £50k really doesn’t go far in London. Our household earns over £100k and upsizing our home feels so far away. I realise that there are people with less who are also struggling but that doesn’t mean that those who aren’t exactly living hand to mouth aren’t allowed to fret about money. It’s not insensitive as different people have different realities: I’m aware there are people relying on food banks which is awful but that doesn’t mean I’m not allowed to feel sad that a supposedly great income doesn’t go as far as I’d like

DaveGrohl · 02/02/2022 23:11

At 33 I was on £100k (my boss said he rounded up so I was on 6 figures) and had just come back from 9 months maternity leave.

shilohh · 02/02/2022 23:18

@doadeer

I earn £36k doing 1 day a week as I care for my son but I do a very flexible job.

£50k is a brilliant salary.

Wow. What do you do?

Downsize then, you’ll have more money. Plenty of places in London where you can get a decent 2-3 bed terrace for 400k or under. If that’s not doable on a 100k joint income then you’re probably spending too much on things you don’t really need.
AledsiPad · 02/02/2022 23:35

£9k.

@morningstruggles

For those saying they feel bad reading this thread.

I'm 30, on 47k (in the midlands) and am still recovering from the mental breakdown I had last year from the stress of my job........

It's not always worth it.

Same
Frazzled2207 · 02/02/2022 23:39

Wowsers I’m 10 years older than you and earn 45k in the north. But was on mat leave/pt for several years and then out of it completely for 4 years so feels not too bad. Or I thought so before I wandered onto this thread.

Sexybexi · 02/02/2022 23:57

This thread is ridiculous. It's just full of people boasting about their great salaries. Basically salary shaming people who earn less. If you took the average salary on this thread it would be something like 80k no way is that representative of this forum.

Mandofan · 03/02/2022 00:03

@Sexybexi stop projecting. No one is boasting. The op asked a question and people answered. I haven’t seen anyone salary shame yet

MmeSosostris · 03/02/2022 01:19

It is really helpful to see the range of salaries and particularly, how high some are on post maternity.

Women are definitely disadvantaged not discussing in concrete terms these issues - some just do not know the range of jobs out there and what the market will pay for their skills.
