Hi all, so I was doing some housework yesterday and while washing up something shot up my thumbnail but I dont think it got wedged, anyways it hurt at the time but i didn't think anything of it, anyways it was throbbing all last night and this morning i have woken up to a very fat finger it's like 2 thumbs have merged and it hurts aswell i can't really do anything with it movement wise! So of course i googled and it has not made me feel any better I'm imagining waking up to tomorrow with a missing thumb that's stuck to dh's head!!😱🙈 also I can't get in at doctors they are full and I can't get to A&E either! Please someone make me feel better and tell me my thumb will be fine🤣

Also sorry for typos my normal hand is indisposed!

Why on earth are people screeching to go to A&E?

She's stuck something under her nail, which has caused a localised inflammation that chances are her body will deal with.

IF it gets worse, it MIGHT need antibiotics which a GP can deal with perfectly well. In fact a GP can manage even if there's something jammed in there (which there is no indication of) and refer for X-ray.

Its not even been a day and you're all acting as though she's going to die if she doesn't have IV antibiotics STAT.

What would your grandmothers do in this situation?? We need to learn how to deal with minor illnesses and injuries without always running to the NHS.

CloudPop · 31/01/2022 16:06

The GP will just send you to minor injuries. Agree with asking the pharmacist to take a look but the GP won't be able to help if anything needs doing.

itsutterlyshit · 31/01/2022 16:06

Your thumb is most definitely swollen compared to your non injured one.
If there's any redness draw round it to see if the redness spreads.
I jammed a wooden splinter under my thumb nail a few years ago, it was the worst pain. And seemed to throb for days on end. It didn't swell like yours though and I could move it normally so I'd keep a close eye on it and probs u phone NHS24 just due to the extremely obvious swelling it looks like a comedy thumb 👍🏼🤭

Go to the pharmacist to get it looked at. Some can prescribe antibiotics if necessary, but even if they can't they will be able to tell you if it needs to be seen by a dr, or if there are other treatments you can do yourself.

Hanywany · 31/01/2022 16:25

Just been to chemist over road they said go see your doctors! fat lot of good they were but they aren't usually very helpful anyway!
@willingtolearn funnily enough that's what I thought this morning when Iooked at it but then i googled it and the panic took over and ended up phoning gp to be told no room bugger off til tomorrow lol!
@itsutterlyshit lol I know I've realised I have horrendous hands they are super wrinkly it's all that bloody bleach and cleaning products there always in! Bloody comedy thumb my dc will laugh there heads off at that!🤣
Mine throbs but not sure that's do with the the hand being lower than the heart so I can feel it throbbing! Yuk!

Magnesium sulphate. It'll draw out any foreign bodies and often infection as well. It's miracle ointment.

itsutterlyshit · 31/01/2022 16:36

Sorry @Hanywany but your pictures really made me laugh! Reminded me of Tom and Jerry cartoons!
I hope you get it sorted soon, take some painkillers, paracetamol and ibuprofen to help with the throbbing and inflammation.

Hanywany · 31/01/2022 16:43

@itsutterlyshit Haha yes when poor tom has his tail shut in a door or something by Jerry it totally does!🤣 this made me giggle
@madisonbridges ok that sounds like it would work I'm gonna nip back to chemist again see if they have any of it, if not good old Amazon should have some

The photos are reassuring- i would try to keep hand elevated in a makeshift sling when sitting or resting on a few pillows when lying down to allow. Continue soaking in warm salt water and just see how if it is improving or worsening. An anti inflammatory like ibuprofen may also help if you don’t have any contraindications to taking it.

Currently doesn’t look like it requires antibiotics but see how it looks tomorrow. Hope you feel better soon!

Hanywany · 31/01/2022 18:15

@hopeful777 yes that's exactly what I have been doing and I'm hoping it will just sort itself out! the nail is a bit more dark pink now so I'm hoping the saltwater is doing its job
Thanks so much for all the replies, super helpful, i didnt think I was going to get any to be quite honest
I'll update tomorrow on my comic thumb!Grin

How is it today? Hope the initial anxiety in your first post is feeling better too.

Hanywany · 01/02/2022 21:30

Sorry I havent updated sooner it's been a bit manic today! anyways my thumb today is still attached and actually is feeling sooo much better and it's gone down too, all the advice about salt water worked a treat! I woke up this morning looked at my thumb and decided I dont need to spend an hour waiting in line to speak to doctors so I just didnt bother! I was so paranoid yesterday after googling fat thumbs and reading about people having tops of there thumbs chopped off etc, I've learnt my lesson and am not doing that again 🙈🤣 also investing in some bloody rubber gloves( which I always forget in shopping)
They would save me alot of bother
Again thank you everyone for your super advice!
@SocialConnection its feeling alot better today thank you, god I feel like a right twat to say the least lol! I think sometimes things at certain times just feel so much bloody bigger than what they actually are!🙈😊

So glad to hear your thumb's on the mend. Although I was gearing myself up for your new username of OneThumbHanywany. Glad that didn't come to pass. 😉

oobedobe · 01/02/2022 22:44

Glad your thumb is feeling better today.

I think it would be a good idea for you to focus on creating more of a support network for yourself. I know it is hard, we have always lived abroad with no family etc. Try to befriend some Mums or neighbours who you can trade favours with if you need to.

4 children, no car and a DH not able to come back with short notice sounds really stressful in an emergency!

Hanywany · 01/02/2022 23:07

@madisonbridges haha that made me laugh out loud I'm glad too!😅😁

Hanywany · 01/02/2022 23:15

@oobedobe it's super stressful, unfortunately it's always just me and dh having to try and deal with everything because we both have family but their a bit shit the lot of them to put it blunt! I have a brother in london literally 2 miles down the road from me and he just isnt bothered! It sad but I've had friends and they always let me down! So now I just dont bother, but as you said it does make life extremely stressful and a pain in the ass at times!
But I definitely agree we need to get something sorted for emergencies etcSmile
