This is a crap day for a Jubilee holiday

All schools have a discretionary day's holiday to add to this school year to celebrate the queen's platinum jubilee. DD's school chose today Confused It's cold, raining, windy and generally miserable.

AIBU to wonder why they didn't choose a day in the summer when the kids could have a picnic, go to the park, play outside etc.? Instead, I'm at work as usual while my parents look after her. I'm sure she'll have a lovely time with them but it just feels like a waste of a holiday.

@RoseIrisLily yes I am!

Tal45 · 31/01/2022 08:04

Is DD at secondary and DS at primary perhaps? Secondary schools wouldn't take days off in May or June as it's exam season.

Gilly12345 · 31/01/2022 08:05

A convenient day for the school by the sound of it.

As it’s an extra discretionary day maybe hard to schedule in the Summer time but yes I do agree in an ideal world a day in the Summer would be better.

Crazy at least wait till y11 leave.

Cryingbutstilltrying · 31/01/2022 08:06

Ours are in March, just random days. Primary and secondary are different too. Can’t work out what the logic is behind it at all, other than it being a long term as Easter is late. Hopefully it won’t be quite so wild weather as today 🤞🏻

SpiderinaWingMirror · 31/01/2022 08:06

For the love of God, why wouldn't you just finish a day earlier in the Summer?

Tree543 · 31/01/2022 08:07

@Aroundtheworldin80moves

Extra day added to the beginning of the summer holidays here.
Same here. At all 3 of my kids' schools.
BobHadBitchTits · 31/01/2022 08:07

I didn't know about this and I have no idea when my sons school is/was off for it.

Whoops.

CherieBabySpliffUp · 31/01/2022 08:08

The teachers won't be taking a duvet day, they'll be in as normal. Maybe today was a convenient day for booking some staff training?

TheDoveFromAboveCooCoo · 31/01/2022 08:08

@purpleme12

I thought there was a specific day for it later in the year
Me too! 5th June isn't it?
Mumdiva99 · 31/01/2022 08:08

This additional day for teachers is not for the benefit of the children. Nor is it intended for the children to celebrate or have picnics. Kids can celebrate the same time everyone else does.
This day is to make it fair that the rest of the work force gets an additional bank holiday this year, which as it falls into teachers holidays is not extra for them. The schools have complete discretion to choose which day they wish to use for this. Unless they sprung it on you with no notice then really there is nothing to complain about.

They won't. The purpose of the additional day is to give teachers/school staff an additional days holiday. To make it fair.
anon12345678901 · 31/01/2022 08:11

It's an odd day as the jubilee is a while away, but why couldn't you take the day off as holiday? I'm assuming the school gave notice of the day off today.

TheDoveFromAboveCooCoo · 31/01/2022 08:11

Bit mean - ours have put it in the half term week so no additional dates for them!

Passthecake30 · 31/01/2022 08:13

Mine have an inset day today. I think it’s a great day to have it! They’re ready for a rest and we’re off out to a hopefully empty cinema and inside shopping centre. I’m lucky that I have leave I’m required to use up.

Why would they be in as normal? It's an extended weekend for everyone, not a staff INSET.
JugglingJanuary · 31/01/2022 08:14

All the schools should have had the same day, so there was some sense of celebration.

Definitely not just tagged onto the summer holidays. Or a random day in January.

That's true, I wasn't thinking about it from that POV. I hope the teachers are enjoying their day off, no matter the weather. (It's howling here, (SE) I hope everyone up north is ok x
FingersofFish · 31/01/2022 08:20

Ours is in the middle of half term so the kids don't really get a benefit!

Orchid876 · 31/01/2022 08:23

We’ve added a day onto the summer holidays. However, there’s so many staff and students off ill with COVID at the moment that we may as well be closed. Is it a pre-planned day or relatively last minute?

lollipoprainbow · 31/01/2022 08:27

I've heard nothing about this for my dd school !

Orchid876 · 31/01/2022 08:27

@FingersofFish the official extra bank holiday that everyone else gets is in half term, but there’ll be another day somewhere so the teachers also get an extra day off. It’s probably added onto an existing holiday so as to not be very obvious. Even though most bank holidays are in school holidays, schools contractually can’t just ignore this extra one and decide that they’ll leave it in the holidays.

BlowDryRat · 31/01/2022 08:28

No, it's the other way round. DD's in primary, DS in secondary.

I could have booked today off but I'm lacking in imagination and enthusiasm for a 3-day weekend doing expensive indoor activities or heading outside in crap weather.

Porthia · 31/01/2022 08:28

I hadn’t realised this. School announced that the summer holidays would start a day earlier than originally planned and I just assumed it was for an extra inset day or something but I think it must be this!

mydogisthebest · 31/01/2022 08:29

Summer days can be pretty awful weather wise too.

My birthday is mid June and most years the weather is shit. Often it is quite chilly and it's rarely warm or sunny. In 2020 it absolutely poured all day. We went out for the day but got so soaked after 2 hours we went home again
