Boring tips and tricks which have made your life easier.

Inspired by the purchase of a flat mop thing from wilkos with removable washable pads, and some method spray and mop bottle. No longer am I wrestling with a dirty looking mop, a kettle and a mop bucket. It took 5 minutes, the house smells like rhubarb (!) and the floor is shiny as.

Any more time-saving, life changing tips for me? I seriously hate mopping so this has made me a lot happier and life's most boring jobs!

So you just pour a bucket of soapy water in the bottom of your wheelie bin? And chuck rubbish on top? Why have i never hear of this strange wizardry?

ElenaCouch · 01/02/2022 17:26

@Madreheaven

I use a dishmatic filled with flash bathroom to clean bath sink and shower😊
Oh wow I'm gonna try this!

I don't iron. As I tumble dry, most of my clothes don't need ironing anyway, but when something does look wrinkled I use a handheld clothes steamer. Gets the wrinkles out in seconds just by waving it around. Magic
Where am I going wrong? Everything comes out of my brand new dryer so wrinkled and even more in need of ironing.

I have an overdoor shoe organiser on the door of the coat cupboard. It holds all the hats, gloves, face masks, etc for everyone so easy to grab and no hunting for matching gloves, etc! In the summer it has sun hats, sunglasses, sun cream.

For those struggling with printing labels, you can get A4-sized labels to print onto, instead of the ones with loads of little labels on one sheet. You don't have to worry about lining it all up properly; just print and then cut them out.

Anyone know whether Alexa is any good for lists? 😁

If you have a mat or carpet that shows every crumb you can easily make it look clean by wearing rubber soled shoes and dragging your feet ( one at a time !!) across it. I find that crocs are amazing but also lots of sandals etc do the same job.
The amount of hair I gather near the threshold of DDs room ( she has a hair drying station near her door) is phenomenal. And very satisfying as I wouldnt have dragged the vacuum cleaner up to the landing just for that spot.
The best things about doing this is - no bending and some exercise for the old hips and thighs .

Benjispruce5 · 01/02/2022 19:06

Don’t drag your crocs on the carpet, get a rubber broom!

Cuck00soup · 01/02/2022 19:06

My favourite note/reminder is Quickysticky which is like a post it on your phone. You can add it to your Home Screen so that you can see your shopping list or reminder without unlocking your phone.

it's also an easy way to track my mileage.

There are more complex apps with better functionality but the reviews of them said you get lots of annoying ads so I picked the basic one.

Probably works for me because I also a similar app on my pc.

For work (I'm a solicitor), I have a single page document with everything I need to do on my active files which I update and re- order before I finish work each day. It saves a lot of " what do I need to do next?" mental energy and the incentive to clear off the list everything that I have highlighted for that day, makes me work more efficiently. The system works for other jobs too!

@Fozzleyplum

Is your single page doc an electronic page - and you update and then print? I’m trying to be more organised at work, but find a lot of systems too complex

@Luredbyapomegrsnate It's just a boring old Word document. I don't even print it off- it's just there on my laptop and I update it as I go. In fact, I have 2. One, which I review every couple of weeks or so, has a list of bills and the dates for sending reminders, plus a list of files that need to be closed.

The other is a list of all my "live" matters with a note on the current state of play. I highlight in yellow, those that I need to keep an eye on, eg if I am waiting for someone to get back to me. The tasks that I need to do are highlighted in pink, and numbered each evening in order of priority. I also put my domestic " to dos" at the top of that one and highlight in the same way.

For some reason, I'm much more productive when my day involves changing the pink highlights to yellow![/quote]
Thanks! I think I need something super simple like this..

And yes, nothing like a bit of bold colour coding.

We use IKEA sortera boxes for washing. One box for lights and one for darks. Washing is sorted as you go and when the box is full it's time to put the wash on.

Kids trained to sort lights and darks too so everyone is on board.

I am LIVID I went to ikea specifically for these and they and they were sold out! Grin
ChiefWiggumsBoy · 01/02/2022 19:43

@Luredbyapomegranate you can also use OneNote for this. It auto saves and it’s easier to add tick boxes.

I use it for note taking for meetings but also a daily log of tasks. I used to do all this in notebooks.

I say this from the bottom of my heart.

You're a fucking superhero.

Made my first list for tomorrow am. There's now a fighting chance my kids will have their packed lunches.

@ChiefWiggumsBoy

Ah - brilliant - I was literally just thinking that it would be great if there was a simple page system that would sink across devizes like one of the more complex apps. Thanks for this

Those of you who share shopping lists on your phones - what app do you use to do this?

MissConductUS · 01/02/2022 20:59

Your bin men must hate you

I was thinking this too. When my rubbish is collected, they pick up the bin from the bottom and turn it upside down into the back of the truck and just let the bags fall out of it.

Yes, I'm still trying to work it out - so the bin permanently has water in the bottom, and it pours out in into the bin van?.
MsJaneAusten · 01/02/2022 21:26

Doesn’t the bin get attached to the lorry, which tips it up automatically? So not putting bin men at risk of filthy water?

You can just do it in notes on the iPhone
