Just a Sunday thought remembering how we used to get phone top ups

OP posts:

Purses or wallets. I use a small card holder and stick a few notes in it. I also use Apple Pay and keep some cars on my phones wallet. I keep coins in my pocket

RaraRachael · 30/01/2022 16:48

I hate online clothes shopping and Deliveroo etc and many other delivery services aren't available in my area. I don't bother getting a newspaper any more and rarely use cash. As for cars, I will be using the bus once electric cars become compulsory. They're just not going to practical where I live.

ChasedByFox · 30/01/2022 16:49

I use my iPod every other day when I run. My DD used a usb stick just this afternoon! I use CDs in my car. I read books daily.
MIL gets phone top-ups. (Because she never uses her mobile, it's for emergencies). We have a landline too.

DontKeepTheFaith · 30/01/2022 16:49

@BringYourOwnBoris

Stationery and even printer ink. I can't remember the last time I had to print something! Also cheques! I remember my 20 odd Yr old DD finding an old one and asking me what it was Grin
God, I love stationery and still buy loads and loads! Nice notebooks, diaries, pens, pen cases…..

Also, printer ink. I’m NHS, we print everything🤣 Paperless is an aspiration only.

Only gave up faxing a year or 2 ago but still have the function on our printer.

Chewbecca · 30/01/2022 16:51

Why no phone top ups? What am I missing out on?

EmmaH2022 · 30/01/2022 16:52

@Scianel

Scheduled tv programmes.
Finally...one that applies to me!
pastypirate · 30/01/2022 16:52

Dd1 told me today 'books don't need charging!' She takes a book out if we are going further than the end of the road

JudgeJ · 30/01/2022 16:52

@BABAHOTEL

Rent videos from blockbusters!
I'm sure that was longer ago than 10 years! I still have and use my CD player, can't be bothered to download stuff.
IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 30/01/2022 16:52

Work suits

Elphame · 30/01/2022 16:53

I imagine that a huge percentage of satellite dishes are now redundant

Just had one installed at the holiday let so guests can access Freesat.

JaninaDuszejko · 30/01/2022 16:53

TV aerial. We stream everything now, in 2012 I still watched terrestrial TV. Still got CDs, DVDs, vinyl, landline (although we call it the 'Mum phone' because only my mum calls us on it), and lots of books. In fact I just bought 3 books today.

JudgeJ · 30/01/2022 16:54

@AppleKatie

Landline (although maybe I was a late ditcher!)

I’d already ditched dvds by then and CDs were just for the car.

You clearly don't live where I do, a landline is essential, I don't want to go to the bottom of the garden to use my phone!
User7698365 · 30/01/2022 16:54

I use CDs in the car, it's more convenient than using my phone, not all the newer stuff is as convenient to use. None of the streaming platforms are as convenient as my Sky+HD, we haven't even gone to SkyQ yet as I will lose my planner.

toppkatz · 30/01/2022 16:56

A camera.

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 30/01/2022 16:56

Satnav. I didn't have a smart phone in 2012 so had a separate satnav.

I still receive and write cheques!

RavenclawDiadem · 30/01/2022 16:57

Maybe more than 10 years ago, but when I was volunteering at a charity shop this week we were given a collection of phonecards.

Had forgotten they were ever a thing.

ancientgran · 30/01/2022 16:57

@BrambleyHedge

Cheque book for kids clubs subs
I can't believe how rarely I use cheques. I think in the last few years I've used one a year to send some Christmas money to someone.
thewhatsit · 30/01/2022 16:58

Not sure what is meant by phone top ups?

I stopped topping up a PAYG phone when I got a pay monthly, the week I turned 18 and could get one on my own. I thought PAYG was a thing teenagers had, has it changed?

Caramelvanillafudge · 30/01/2022 17:00

@RaraRachael

I still have lots of books, CDs and DVDs. I have no idea how to listen to music otherwise Confused
You’ve no idea?

You mean you don’t use Spotify, Amazon music, et al.

lostteaspoon · 30/01/2022 17:00

@toppkatz

A camera.
Yes! DS is 7 and was asking for a camera for his birthday. I later realised he might as well have my digital one, it’s a decent one bought in 2012 but I never used it once I got an iPhone in 2013.
Caramelvanillafudge · 30/01/2022 17:01

Most have contracts via their parents @thewhatsit

I do have some sympathy with the view that confiscated phones belong to the parent not the child.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 30/01/2022 17:02

London Olympics Top Trumps. To directly quote my DSs at the time 6: "Aha, I have Insane Bolt" 8: "Oh nuts, I wish I had Ed Milliband" GrinGrinGrin

lostteaspoon · 30/01/2022 17:02

Printed tickets for cinema, activities, events, museums etc. They’re all emailed and have a barcode which they scan on enter - haven’t had a printed ticket in yonks

TillyTopper · 30/01/2022 17:03

Change for dinner money.
Making sure the "work bag" is packed the night before.

User7698365 · 30/01/2022 17:03

The only time I have had to use cheques was when DM died in 2016 and the solicitor would only be paid by cheque, it was a right palaver getting a cheque book in a hurry as I had to order one from my bank which was very difficult to find where the order form was for one and then it took ages to come n the post.
