Things we don't need in 2022 like we did 10 years ago

Just a Sunday thought remembering how we used to get phone top ups

People used to trail cables through their letterboxes across the pavement to charge their cars quite happily on our street (covered by decent cable ramps). Nowadays they don't do that because they just plug them into the lampposts.

Flats aren't a particular problem if you have designated parking.

MyDarlingWhatIfYouFly · 31/01/2022 09:37

They switched off analog tv in 2012, so no more plug in aerials that sat on top of the tv. I don't miss moving them around to try and get a good signal.

Your street must be very different from mine as there are very few lampposts, several were taken out a few years ago and replaced by new brighter ones which were taller. Our nearest lamppost is down the road on the other side and I'm sure it hasn't got a charging point. Some of us have drives but others don't.

Where are these lamp post chargers? I've never seen one.
Phrenologistsfinger · 31/01/2022 09:50

Let’s revisit the EV thing in ten years’ time Grin

BarbaraofSeville · 31/01/2022 09:56

Maybe they will be more practical and affordable in 10 years time. But we're a long way from being there for most people right now.

In 10 years time, I'll be hoping to be offered a scrappage deal on what is now a 2 YO small petrol car that makes a new electric car affordable.

But even that will be beyond low paid people who need cars to get to work and run their lives because public transport is shit and expensive in much of the country.

We don't just need electric cars, because after all, all the transition to electric cars does is makes the traffic jams less polluting. We need workable public transport to be more widespread than it currently is.

I see people on London buses using their watch or phone for paying but it always seems to take longer than just using an oyster card.

If you have Apple Transit installed, both phone and watch are faster than an Oyster Card.

I haven’t owned an Oyster Card for about five years as TFL have been trying to phase them out in preference to contactless cards.

Porridgeislife · 31/01/2022 10:08

All over Central London.

Porridgeislife · 31/01/2022 10:12

Me and DH still use oyster cards. I think all the reliance on phones for everything is risky and silly. Phone networks can go down and then you are stuck.

Apple Pay/Google Pay works when your phone is offline or not in range. It doesn’t use your phone network but rather stores your info in a secure chip in the phone (NFC technology).

OK, so easily accessible to everyone then. I'll remember that next time I'm driving from Leeds to Edinburgh.

They may well have them in Leeds and Edinburgh, last time I checked neither city was a provincial backwater.

User0458832 · 31/01/2022 10:27

Maybe Gove will level us all up and everyone that doesn't live in London and a few other cities will get lamppost car chargers, we also don't get 5g. Where I live in a midlands town of about 30k people we haven't even got FTTP up our street so I doubt it will happen anytime soon. Maybe I should revisit this in another10 years

The right to tiptoe around the whole lie that 'transwomen are actual Women'.

Thanks to the Maya Forstater judgement last year it's now legally ok to say "I think you're fab but you're not a woman".

Mushrooms0up · 31/01/2022 10:27

@porridgeislife I’m in Manchester and have never seen a lamp post charger and it’s hardly a countryside backwater!

We want to get an electric car but we live in a terraced house so can’t. We’ve settled for hybrid.

Maybe Gove will level you up too😂

Doh - I meant the necessity to lie about 'transwomen are actual Women'. It's now something we can drop entirely

Ohh I remembered another. Maybelline dream matte mousse foundation. I loved that stuff. So pleased there's not many teen photos of me 🤣

EightMonthsScared · 31/01/2022 11:43

Maybelline dream matte mousse foundation

That so dried my skin out but I loved it for some reason. I don't even wear foundation now.

I guess fake tan was the other thing. Everybody was still orange ten years ago. Orange with lots of lip gloss and completely flat hair.

Bebo and MySpace... MSN Messenger!
These died way before 2012!

No idea what people were using but most of them took far longer than those with an oyster card.

Quite a few would have to tap their phone or watch more than once and a couple of people using their phones seemed to have to fiddle around finding the right app or whatever.

No way am I using my bank card on a bus or tube. It's not difficult to top up the oyster card

Elderflower14 · 31/01/2022 13:53

@thisplaceisweird...MSN Messenger didn't finish till 2014..

BearSoFair · 31/01/2022 13:56

I've only read the first page but suddenly feeling very out of touch! Still have Sky, a landline, top up my phone (for a monthly bundle but still), buy books and DVDs, and use my Oyster Card...

I have never heard of lamppost chargers. Pretty sure not many places have them.

Also even if flats have designated parking unless there are charging points residents still can't charge their cars.

I read that lots of councils don't allow residents to trail cables across the pavement whether covered by a ramp or not

@Riapia

A kindle just doesn’t smell as nice as a new book.
True, but it's harder to take a 400-plus pages book into the bath.
