How much do you pay for a loaf of bread?

From the supermarket? Do any of you buy the ones that are 36p or 49p...the own brand loaf...is it any good? We pay around 99p for kingsmill 50/50. Sometimes buy the own brand or even the 36p one (once to try it out)...

I like Irwins brown soda bread - £1.35, I have it for breakfast toasted.
Everyone else eats Kingsmill 50/50 - £1.10 so we always have this in.
M&S cheese bread - £2.20 (it is as good as it sounds and I could eat the lot do rarely buy it. Same for tiger bread too, especially Morrisons)

We have a few other bread products on the go most of the time. Breakfast muffins / wholemeal pitta / rolls for packed lunch (we don't have all if these available at all times. Depends on what I'm doing for food that week)

Bread is the only carb we all eat.

£3 for a gluten free loaf that would be 50p if it wasn't gluten free and it would taste better 🙄

earsup · 29/01/2022 16:32

i stock up when reduced at waitrose....just got about 8 loaves for 60p...all in freezer...dont use much bread....some trendy shops near me charge as much as £13 for a loaf....yes....the average in the trendy shops is about £4 or slightly higher.

Between £3.50 - £4 for organic sourdough loaf depending on size / type. I buy expensive locally made bread as one of my treats (don't do coffee out etc).

But bread is something where I definitely will buy organic whether fancy artisan or basic supermarket if I can possibly afford it because of routine pre-harvest use of glyphosate (RoundUp) weedkiller in the UK to dry off conventional wheat crops.

Just in case anyone is interested - from AHDB advisory leaflet: "Pre-harvest glyphosate: best practice in cereals (snippet below)

"For cereals, glyphosate applications can reduce green material, including immature tillers, and improve harvest efficiency and grain storage. This can be particularly valuable in wet seasons. Glyphosate residues are occasionally found in samples. Although these residues have been well below Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs), they require careful management."

£4 for a loaf 😱

Bread is a staple in this house, I use at least 3 loaves p/w. Hence buying ones that cost less than 50p.

This thread is an eye opener!

£1.60 for Hovis Granary thick sliced loaf

Sadik · 29/01/2022 17:15

I guess it's all about choices / what you can afford. We also buy at least 3 loaves p/w, but not broke and don't do takeaways / readymade food / coffeeshops etc so I figure £10-£12/week for something that is very tasty and definitely good for us is fine. Obviously if we couldn't afford it I wouldn't buy it!

I'm equally stunned by cost of holiday threads having not been abroad / on a non-visiting-friends or camping holiday in the last 10 years plus Grin

NightmareSlashDelightful · 29/01/2022 17:18

I like the Bertinet one, it’s about £3.50 a big loaf.

But we barely eat bread so a loaf lasts a week, 10 days. (I keep it in the fridge or freezer to make it last longer.)

Throughabushbackwards · 29/01/2022 17:51

Anywhere from a pound or so for a cheap loaf for the freezer to £4-6 for a posh bakery loaf on the weekend.

fussychica · 29/01/2022 17:52

Not big bread eaters here but Warburtons small toastie loaf if buying white 85p I think and Waitrose Duchy organic seeded half bloomer £1.90 but often get reduced and freeze. Silly money but bloody lovely.

fussychica · 29/01/2022 17:55

Shock£13 for a loaf of bread. The phrase "I saw you coming" springs to mindGrin

RoseMartha · 29/01/2022 18:03

I am fussy about bread. I buy the bakery bread as less additives and get it sliced usually about £1.15 a loaf.

One loaf lasts 1-2 weeks.

Teeeefs · 29/01/2022 18:07

I’m always amazed at how cheap food is in the UK. It’s a disgrace, really.

caringcarer · 29/01/2022 18:29

I buy Warbiton's white loaf for family cost £1.10. I eat very little bread and prefer a French stick £1. I would eat an odd slice of a cheap bread if I was offered a sandwich somewhere. I would not mind.

skybluee · 29/01/2022 19:31

It's 95p and I make sure to use all of it so there are no wasted slices.

Yes we use 5-6 loaves a week so although nice bread is lovely and far nicer than the cheap stuff it’s a rare weekend lunch treat here!
TolkiensFallow · 30/01/2022 07:59

£1.20 for tesco finest white with sourdough. It’s not “proper” sourdough but a good white bread which lasts well.

waitingpatientlyforspring · 30/01/2022 08:01

I buy the sainsburys 55p loaves and they are fine. Dryer than hovis but given my son mainly uses it for toasted sandwiches and toast, that doesn't matter!

DustySpringboard · 30/01/2022 08:16

About £2 from the local baker. We started only buying from the bakers when all the dc's left home-now 2 are back and it's just dawned on me I'm still buying the fresh bread but getting through at least 4 loaves in a week!

I'm definitely going to reassess our bread purchasing situation!

TrueBuys · 30/01/2022 08:29

About £1 for tesco finest wholemeal with seeds and the white with sourdough one. Good price for really nice bread

FlamingRoses · 30/01/2022 08:37

£1.10 for a hovis granary small loaf.

£3.20 I think for my GF grossness which I don’t get often.

delilahbucket · 30/01/2022 08:45

£1.40 for Hovis Granary but not been able to get it for months and it's the only bread I can eat (something to do with preservatives put in processed loaves). I've started making my own instead although my bread maker had broken so I bought a new one.

megletthesecond · 30/01/2022 09:07

The one that both the DC's will eat is 50/50 and £1.

My gluten free is usually £2.
