How much do you pay for a loaf of bread?

From the supermarket? Do any of you buy the ones that are 36p or 49p...the own brand loaf...is it any good? We pay around 99p for kingsmill 50/50. Sometimes buy the own brand or even the 36p one (once to try it out)...

We like Brace's Gwynny White Bloomer with Added Sourdough but its usually £1.80 for 800g and about £1.20 for 400g. Can't seem to get it in Tesco so end up at our local Co-op. We also like freshly baked bread but tend to get that when we know we are more likely to use it all as the shelf life is usually same day/day after for that one.

DinosApple · 29/01/2022 12:29

Always Tesco own 50/50 and I think it's around 60p.

Tulips21 · 29/01/2022 12:31

Aldi farmhouse about 55p or their bloomer 99p

Sourdough from bakers about £3 a loaf.

Whatsyourfavouritescarymovie · 29/01/2022 12:45

Absolutely nothing usually, get it free from work. If we do have to purchase bread, we get the co op one for about 40p

MountainDweller · 29/01/2022 12:51

€2.25 for sliced organic cereal for DH (cheaper ones, around 99c, taste a bit crap)
€3.50 for gluten free Schär cereal for me (or €4.50 for Genius if I'm splashing out). Bread is a luxury food for me! Rice cakes or even imported oat cakes are cheaper per portion.

DataColour · 29/01/2022 12:55

Usually£3.65 a loaf from an organic shop, sourdough or similar. Only buy once a week though for the weekend for having with soups or a bacon sandwich. We hardly ever eat any bread during the week even the kids.
Sometimes I do buy a morissons Coburg cob for 50p if I'm in there

Joystir59 · 29/01/2022 12:56

Between £2 and £3 for a small artisan loaf, and only occasionally as o don't regularly eat bread. Utterly delicious and eaten with organic salted butter.

womaninatightspot · 29/01/2022 13:01

@multivac

We get almost all our bread, including gluten free, for nothing, via Olio.
We do as well, saves a fortune, saves wastage. We have two pet pigs so when there is too much for the community they get it.
ClariceQuiff · 29/01/2022 13:01

DH buys the 59p white sliced loaf from Tesco. I try to avoid bread but when I've cracked and had some, it's been fine as sliced bread goes. I daren't buy unsliced or artisan bread as I'd binge on it.

hamsterchump · 29/01/2022 13:03

Morrisons bakery is really good so I usually get Farmhouse loaves for £1.10 each from there. You can have them sliced so I usually do and then freeze and take out a third/half each time to defrost at room temperature as I hate stale bread. We also get tiger rolls (£1 for 6) from there and hot cross buns, etc which are great.

Sometimes I might buy sliced, bagged bread and find it's all a much of a muchness. The Lidl Toastie one (49p) is very nice, good thick slices and soft and just as good as any of the big brands for example. I don't know why people pay extra for branded Chorleywood Process bread but loads do. I've tried Warburton's and Hovis etc but never found it any better than supermarket own.

KitKat1985 · 29/01/2022 13:03

About £1 for a branded sliced white loaf like Kingsmill or Hovis. I've tried cheaper loaves but they just don't taste as nice.

Every now and then I'll treat us to a fresh loaf from the bakers for about £2.50 which is absolutely lovely but too much to pay out for all of the time.

Wannabegreenfingers · 29/01/2022 13:03

You do realise that the own brand bread is made by the big branded companies. Just a different receipe. It's cheaper because they choose to use less superior ingredients. It's all baked in the same ovens.

Some do taste horrible and have a rank texture though.
ParkheadParadise · 29/01/2022 13:08

I don't know I don't usually buy bread on its own.
I think it's about £1/£1.50. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

MrsKDB · 29/01/2022 13:10

£5.70 for a large sourdough at our local bakery. U.K.

Raffiamat · 29/01/2022 13:14

Equivalent of £3 for sourdough loaf (in Vietnam). Take me back to 50p bread in the UK!

wow. That is a lot. London?
BigHuff · 29/01/2022 13:16

We are lucky enough to live in a town with 3 excellent bakeries (well, one is in the next town over). Around £3 for a large organic sourdough and we buy 2-3 loaves a week. Which is a lot to spend on bread, but it's so delicious.

Cigfree · 29/01/2022 13:20

£1.60 - £1.70 for Hovis Seed Sensations. Makes lovely sandwiches and toast. Occasionally buy Warburtons Seeded but the crusts are really thick (too thick to toast properly).

SingleHandSue · 29/01/2022 13:22

Eldest DS prefers cheap white sliced, youngest DS likes the more expensive Village Bakery batch loaf. I refuse to buy both as there would be waste so I alternate.

I think cheap Tesco sliced is 40p ish and the Village Bakery is £1.60

I do really Village Bakery stuff.

cushioncovers · 29/01/2022 13:24

Tescos own sliced wholemeal 59p.

Desert76 · 29/01/2022 13:26

I like the Tesco multi seed batch for 95p, and their finest sliced sourdough for £1.50.

If I'm not going to Tesco, I like Hovis farmhouse for £1.25, or a fresh baguette for £1.

Sometimes as a treat I buy a brioche loaf from the baker's for £4.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 29/01/2022 13:26

nice brown, no more than £1
hovis white

Yesyesyesno · 29/01/2022 13:27

My absolute favourite bread is the Tesco Multiseed Batch for 95p. However, Sainsburys is our local so I think we usually grab one £2. Not as good though. I’ve never found a cheap seeded loaf that’s as good as tescos with the bread cut as thick. I’m always disappointed when I try a new bread.
