WFH What do you wear?

I started a new job this week. It's entirely wfh and eve though I was a bit nervous about being in the house all the time I am LOVING it!

My questions is this. I spent lots of time on Teams calls. Should I be dressed (too half 😆) as if I am in the office? No hoodies etc? Do you wear make up etc?

What's the done thing?

I wfh and am on camera most of the day. I wear smart jumper jeans makeup and hair done. No-one wears hoodie most men in shirts no tie. Will probably change to blouses as the weather warms up.

RampantIvy · 28/01/2022 09:19

I have noticed that we have all got a little scruffier the longer we work from home.

TheGratefulBread · 28/01/2022 10:28

I try to keep it smart-ish casual: chinos, a casual top, and a cardigan. If I have client meetings on Zoom, I don't dress any differently.

I do have days when I just wear joggers and a hoodie though.

Leggings and fluffy slippers on my bottom half.

Top half I always go for long sleeve cotton T shirts. Soft and can get away with soft cup/sport bra underneath but also look smart and pretty non descript for calls. Easy to layer up with chunky cosy cardigans if it gets chilly!

CMOTDibbler · 28/01/2022 11:11

It depends on my day tbh. Today I am wearing a nice Baukjen hoody that with a scarf on later will be OK for a slightly more formal internal meeting. If I have a customer meeting I will go anywhere from a nice top/ light make up to full on jacket and earrings (even false lashes if I am recording something for external use). If I don't have anything but my direct team, I'll be in my running kit with an emergency pashmina to hand in case of needing to smarten up

mumonthehill · 28/01/2022 11:17

Smartish top half, shirt and smart jumper. This winter I have bought some jumper dresses so I keep warm!! I have a mirror and lipstick on my desk to put on if I have a meeting. I have bought a thermal top to put on under everything to keep warm. I am often in leggings and socks!

PositiveLife · 28/01/2022 11:22

Leggings, tshirt and some sort of warmer top (usually a long sleeve hiking top or hoody). Smarter tops if it's warm enough for them.
Most people are in jeans, tshirt and hoody/jumper.

reluctantbrit · 28/01/2022 11:28

Jeans and a top, top can be either smart or casual depending what's on hand.

We only have in-house video calls and most people wear casual, jumpers, T-shirts etc. Make up depends on the person, hair is neat.

DappledThings · 28/01/2022 11:56

Same clothes as the weekend. Sometimes a hoodie, depending on the temperature. Last week I was wearing a jumper plus a big hoodie of DH's.

No make-up but then I never do anyway. I can understand people wanting to wear smarter jumper/shirt/other office wear for some meetings but I don't see where make-up comes into it. Wear it if you want but I don't associate it with looking smart or not and I hate the idea make-up is seen as part of office wear.

guessmyusername · 28/01/2022 12:28

PJ'S till morning break then joggies and t-shirt. Camera always off (same as most of colleagues due to set up) so no-one sees me. My dd in pj's with jumper / hoodie most of day Smile as she is on teams for meetings. Doesn't always even brush her hair just pulls it back into a pony.

TheNestedIf · 28/01/2022 12:36

Onesie and a blanket, or shorts and t-shirt in summer. We don't generally have cameras on on calls, so I'm taking full advantage of WFH to be at a comfortable temperature (our offices are freezing).

headintheproverbial · 28/01/2022 12:38

I wouldn't normally wear a hoodie but sweaters are fine. I'm always in leggings and a top.

I do always have make up and hair done properly. I'm 5-8 hours of video meetings a day.

Purplewithred · 28/01/2022 12:41

I have a couple of items that are a bit smarter that I can throw on over a t-shirt and do wear some makeup for meetings, especially lipstick, but have discovered that quality of lighting and background is crucial for a professional impression, possibly more so than what you're wearing.

I own two pairs of 'working trousers' ie Sainsburys stretchy elastic waistband joggers Blush

Dougieowner · 28/01/2022 12:49

I dress just as if I was in the office. In fact my whole routine is the same but instead of walking out the door I instead sit down at my own desk in the living room instead.
I hate calls on Teams where colleagues are waayyy to casual (read as wearing a dressing gown or onezee!) and will block their video image so I don't see them.

NewYearEveryYear · 28/01/2022 12:56

I work for a mid sized tech company in a senior, but largely internally facing, role.

I wear:

Something comfortable on the bottom (but still presentable if I need to pop out to the shops, loose trousers, smartish joggers from Whistles, something like that). And on the top I either wear a shirt or a plain colour top, often slightly oversized.

My hair is my weak spot, but that hasn't changed since I was in an office f/t - it's just that awful flyaway type, but it's always clean and brushed.

I always wear make up, especially lipstick, so I don't look like a corpse.

justustwoandmoo · 28/01/2022 12:58

@GaiusHelenMohiam

I don’t wfh but my Dh and my sister both do.

Him: software engineer, trackies and hoody. Rarely does f2f teams, they usually have cameras off.

Her: HR/payroll. Office wear, hair done, makeup. Spends most of her day on F2F teams/zoom.

I think it depends on the sector (with maybe a dollop of sexist expectations? I’ll ask her if the men are in shirt and tie).

I am in HR so probably the same as your sister. My job before this was always office based even through the pandemic so it's a whole new world for me. Have loved it ! So far....

I wonder is men actually were suite trousers or just a shirt and the hide the trakkies on the bottom 😂

At the moment, I'm wearing casual jumpers over casual dresses, with leggings for warmth.

RampantIvy · 28/01/2022 13:03

We have cameras on for Teams calls. Our HOD has requested that we do so, and I agree with her. You can see people's body language and expressions. It has also helped to welcome new team members since WFH and we all feel that we know each other better by being able to see each other.

I've tried to be in a routine this week. Got up, showered and dressed and then headed out for a walk with a flask of coffee. Makes me feel a bit better about being in the house all day!

Bouledeneige · 28/01/2022 13:37

I would dress and do my make up on my top half as if I was in the office but wear joggers or leggings from the waist down. Not super smart but keeping up a reasonable professional appearance. It does depends on the culture. I'd just ask a colleague or your boss what the expectation was.

Justkeeppedaling · 28/01/2022 13:43

Depending on the weather, jeans and jumper/hoodie or shorts and T shirt. Sometimes a blanket on my knees and/or a hot water bottle on my feet.
The WFH world really is quite casual.

twinkie100 · 28/01/2022 13:53

I'm also on Teams calls and meetings all day - often presenting or leading etc.

I wear leggings, big socks and slippers, but with a nice top or jumper. Hair and makeup done as if am at the office.

TooManyPJs · 28/01/2022 14:05

Pyjamas mainly 😬

Blahblahblah40 · 28/01/2022 14:52

I try to avoid hoodies if it’s a day where I have teams with seniors but still comfortable. So maybe a plain tshirt or blouse with cardi over or a smartish jumper. Can’t see bottom half so black leggings or comfy leggings. If it’s my line manager/team colleagues then they take me as I am!
