A boring one...gas or induction hob

We are finally getting a much needed new kitchen and need to decide between gas and induction hob.

I'm leaning towards induction mainly for environmental reasons, as at least we can get renewable electricity, whereas gas will always be gas (and increasingly expensive too). But also, I'm tempted for my own peace of mind as when we've had gas before I am constantly checking it's off before I leave the house (this isn't totally unwarranted worry on my part, DH has left it on before!).

DH wants gas as he just finds it great to cook on, his parents have induction and it doesn't seem much better than the bog standard electric hob we currently have. On the other hand I've heard some induction hobs are good.

So I thought I'd ask a wider audience! Are they any good, or will we have to spend a fortune to get a half decent one (budget is tight so we don't have lots)?

We've just changed from gas to induction, and I love it - mostly for the ease of cleaning to be honest, don't find it much different to cook on.

Very responsive, a world away from the old style electric hobs.

You'll need new pans if your current ones aren't compatible (but we needed new ones anyway).

The only drawback I can see is that in power cuts we'd be buggered to cook now.

We’ve stuck with gas in our new kitchen. I prefer it for cooking.

I don’t think there’s a ‘right answer’ though. My sister loves her induction.

I've got an induction hob, but would go back to gas if we ever move again.

The hob is lovely and sleek, but I just prefer cooking with gas and my old pans, rather than the expensive, heavy, stainless steel ones I had to buy for induction.

No other reason that that really......

We moved from a house with a gas hob to one with no gas supply and a ceramic hob. I hated it and soon replaced with a neff induction which is poles apart from the old ceramic one. To be honest I prefer it to the gas one now, which I'd never expected. Just as responsive in my hands and so much easier to clean. Given the move away from gas for boilers and supply uncertainty/increaing costs I'm really happy with what we have and think it's probably more future proof.

Induction! I had one put in on a whim in my old house (no mains gas) when redoing the kitchen, and loved it. In a previous house I had had gas and loved it too. I moved again to a house with a gas hob and was prepared to love it again, but absolutely hated it. I couldn't get the gas low enough to cook bolognese/chili long and slow without burning, the cleaning was a pain, and it seemed to take forever to boil a pan of water. It really put me off cooking. I lasted 4 weeks before having an induction hob installed and I still love it every day. It's just as responsive as gas, can go on a really low heat, turns itself off of something boils over or I have removed all the pans, and is so easy to clean. Each time I have had a basic level Neff hob (around £400).

Induction. I switched from gas and would never go back now. It's very heat responsive too so still great for gourmet cooking. I had a Neff which was very good. Now have a fancy Italian one.

If it’s relevant to you (it isn’t to me but something a friend said as she doesn’t have gas) - you need a flame to make Indian breads.

Induction after having gas and electric in the past and I love it. We had just replaced the kitchen and while in Ikea was impressed with price of their largest induction hob. I had bought 2 Neff ovens and the saving on the Ikea one to Neff was considerable at the time. So easy to clean and instant touch response.

Never use the gas! Induction is neff

Gas.
I hated our induction. It constantly switched itself off, was slower than a sloth to heat anything, beeped randomly because it didn't like what I was doing and was generally a headache. I would be really reluctant to get one again, even tho I suspect it was actually the landlords crappy choice rather than all induction hobs causing the problem.

I had only ever had gas and I love to cook.
We moved in to a new house and it had an induction hob which I thought I'd live with until we put a new kitchen in. I bought cheap pans to use on it as it wasn't staying! Suffice to say, I put an induction in the new kitchen as I ended up loving it so much - the huge range of heat, including fast heat up for boiling water etc, the timer, so I can leave a pot on low and go out knowing it will turn off, but above all this, the cleaning!

I love my induction hob. It’s ikea, about £500 I think.

My husband is the cook in this house and loved the gas hob. We changed to an induction and he was very leary of it and reluctant, but we aren’t on mains gas and gas bottles were getting expensive.

Anyway now he loves the induction and wouldn’t want to go back to gas.

And from a cleaning point of view, it’s a dream!

Get a good quality one, ours is Miele.

Induction every time. I'm just about to rip out the gas one in my new home for induction. I had one in my last house and it was amazing.
Just wipe clean and it heats up so fast.

We've just had a Neff induction hob fitted after years of gas. It was really pushed as being incredible, boils water in no time at all etc. I can't say that I find it much difference to gas in that respect. It's much easier to clean and looks good but isn't all it's cracked up to be in my opinion.

Nef induction, was talked into it by kitchen designer and it was a good decision.
Easy to clean, can use as worktop space if not cooking, boils water really quickly (mine has a boost function if only one ring in pair is in use). Can turn all heat points off at once and can set to turn off in X minutes. It turns itself off if there is no pan, less risk of burning myself.
I wouldn't go back to gas.
Our old pans did work, but we bought teflon ingenio as the handles come off and they are much easier to store.

AEG induction, I'd always used gas but now prefer the induction as it's cleaner and boils water so much faster.

Having had both I much prefer induction. I found with the gas hob I had was too hot at the lowest temperature I could set it at. I do a lot of cooking at low temperature and so it just didn't work for me!

Induction all the way - had one fitted when kitchen was done a couple of years back. There are DIFFERENT induction hobs get one that needs more power - ours had to be fitted by an electrician (not my 'bodget' DH) as it needed a higher rating cable or something. Some hobs can be wired into the main ring so to speak. It's a joy, easy to clean and feels safe somehow?? John Lewis for mine. Was always a gas lover, but now wouldn't go back. More controllable imo

I bloody hate cooking on induction. Gas hobs are a hill I choose to die on.

We have recently had a new kitchen and got an induction, mainly because I was sick of trying to keep the gas hob clean and wanted the kitchen to look good. So far very pleased with it and just a wipe over after cooking keeps it looking really clean. I was advised by the sales person that they can chip and getting one with thicker glass would be preferrable. NEFF and Bosch tend to have thicker glass. Ours is a BOSCH. The other thing is to make sure it is powerful enough, as less powerful ones I understand may not becso flexible. I find that if you cook on high number, the pans heat very quickly, the lower numbers can take longer, but we have a boost function on ours which makes a difference. The other thing with gas was over time the ignition buttons could be tempramental. You need to consider the size too, we went to a 5 ring one as I cook a lot, plus a 4 ring would have looked very small in a larger kitchen
