A boring one...gas or induction hob

We are finally getting a much needed new kitchen and need to decide between gas and induction hob.

I'm leaning towards induction mainly for environmental reasons, as at least we can get renewable electricity, whereas gas will always be gas (and increasingly expensive too). But also, I'm tempted for my own peace of mind as when we've had gas before I am constantly checking it's off before I leave the house (this isn't totally unwarranted worry on my part, DH has left it on before!).

DH wants gas as he just finds it great to cook on, his parents have induction and it doesn't seem much better than the bog standard electric hob we currently have. On the other hand I've heard some induction hobs are good.

So I thought I'd ask a wider audience! Are they any good, or will we have to spend a fortune to get a half decent one (budget is tight so we don't have lots)?

We've just stayed in a holiday cottage which had a Neff induction hob. I've always been a fan of gas hobs until now, but am considering swapping over I loved it so much.

Gas has knobs to turn, induction is push buttons, menus, touch screens and ceramic you still have choice. I couldnt be bothered with all the tapping a touch screen, but obviously ypur opinion may differ. Just think this is quite a big and important difference.

@IwishICouldTurnBackTime

I've got an induction hob, but would go back to gas if we ever move again.

The hob is lovely and sleek, but I just prefer cooking with gas and my old pans, rather than the expensive, heavy, stainless steel ones I had to buy for induction.

No other reason that that really......

I didn’t need to buy heavy, expensive pans when I bought my induction hob - I got a set from IKEA and they’ve really stood the test of time. They still look brand new.

I absolutely love my induction hob. It cooks fine, and it's SO easy to clean! That's the main priority for me.
You may need new pans but if you're anything like me, if you have a nice new kitchen you'll want new stuff anyway!

Induction!!!!

We're switching to induction very soon (gas hob is on its last legs, have an induction ordered).

We wanted to switch for environmental reasons as you mentioned - you can decarbonise electricity, but not gas.

But something I've only recently learned, after going to a Mums for Lungs session: gas hobs actually produce indoor air pollution Shock

Induction is better for the air quality in your home.

If you have young children of someone with asthma you should get induction or be very mindful of ventilation if you get gas.

Here is a link to an article linking gas hobs to increased incidence of asthma symptoms:

That should be OR someone with asthma.

Was going to say I cross posted Bocalate and how shocking this is when you learn about it.

There is also a link between outside air pollution from cars and SIDS.

I’ve just changed from gas to induction. It’s great, it’s just as responsive as gas if not more so and comes to the boil way quicker. I was also thinking about gas prices and gas being phased out so I think it is more future-proof as well. I have a freestanding Zanussi cooker.

TheDogsMother · 27/01/2022 12:30

Neff induction hob. We changed from gas when we refitted the kitchen. I would never go back.

CrystalMaisie · 27/01/2022 12:31

Induction. Easy to use and way to keep clean, aesthetically looks great too.

PattyPan · 27/01/2022 12:31

Definitely agree with it being easier to clean as well!

Echobelly · 27/01/2022 12:33

I preferred gas TBH - not every pan works that well with induction , even if it says it's supposed to, the heat just doesn't seem to spread as evenly. Also, annoyingly our one goes off if anything gets spilt on the buttons, which is irritating.

Induction is very fast, which is handly, but I think gas wins on needing you to have such a good pan for things to cook well.

Echobelly · 27/01/2022 12:33

*on not needing you to have good pans

PerditaNitt · 27/01/2022 12:35

I have both - 2 burner gas and 4 “burner” induction, which are side by side and from Neff. I use the gas side for chapattis and anything I cook with my non induction pans (eg my crepe pan). I use my induction side for 90% of my cooking - find the heat control very easy, quick to heat pans, super easy to clean and cools down quickly so is safe. If
I ever redid my kitchen I would have the same combination again.

PerditaNitt · 27/01/2022 12:36

Forgot to say, the side by side option is quite slick - you just have a small strip of metal separating them so it looks like just one unit

trumpisagit · 27/01/2022 12:40

We have an AEG induction hob with Senseboil. I don't really use the Senseboil feature, but the hob is brilliant.
If you have space I would go for a 5/6 burner.
So much easier to clean than gas and much safer.
It turns off if you take the pan off, so very difficult for kids to burn themselves on the hob.

Lemonweightloss · 27/01/2022 12:42

We always had gas then had a new kitchen fitted with an induction. I hated it at first. My first meal looked lovely - baked salmon and crushed new potatoes. I say looked lovely as it ended up on the bottom of the oven. 😭
I've gotten use to it now - love it.
I think it was about £500 - IKEA.
And there's only 2 of us so we hardly needed lots of new pans.
