that front numberplate on most cars are white, and the one at the back is yellow.
Just bought a car and thought perhaps the dealer had made a mistake until I noticed that all cars had this!
Am I the only one who has only just noticed this.

@PastMyBestBeforeDate

Well this thread has done wonders for the cause of women drivers.
Och relax on the jacks, we CAN READ THE NUMBERS
mowly77 · 24/01/2022 23:58

Christ alive. I can’t even drive and I can’t believe anyone who drives is so happy to admit they didn’t know this!

Pinetreesfall · 25/01/2022 00:02

It worries me that I share the road with many of you!
Don't suppose you have any idea of the new changes to the Highway Code either which are likely more impactful than the colours of your front and rear plates Confused

PickAChew · 25/01/2022 00:05

It's not like it's not written down anywhere www.gov.uk/displaying-number-plates/rules-number-plates

Longsight2019 · 25/01/2022 00:07

I marvel at how many new cars are fitted with wonky number plates. You’ll notice too, now I’ve mentioned it. Just watch!

A woman said to me this weekend "the new highway code changes are all well and good, but the highway code is only guidance, not law" 🤦🏻‍♀️
WitchWithoutChips · 25/01/2022 00:12

What. The. Fuck. This thread.

saraclara · 25/01/2022 00:17

@noblegiraffe

They’re not different colours, it’s just the wavelength shifts depending on whether they are travelling towards you or away from you.

The shade of the reg plate is how speed cameras tell how fast you are going.

Please tell me you're not serious.
noblegiraffe · 25/01/2022 00:27

What? Of course I'm not serious! Grin

IAmMyOwnWorstEnemy · 25/01/2022 00:31

@DryWhiteagainW

Did you know about the arrow next to the petrol pump sign on your dashboard? It tells you which side of your car the petrol cap’s on. This was a game changer for me.......although I still check every time I have to fill up Grin
I found out about this from dh when I had my astra. I've now got a year old Renault and it doesn't have an arrow

Phew. You did that too well.

I was about to offer to eat my hat if you didn't know what a Doppler shift was, which in this weather is definitely a mark of extreme confidence.Grin
RussiasGreatestLoveMachine · 25/01/2022 00:34

I’m not the most observant person and it’s been more than ten years since I lived in the UK.

But even I knew this.

In my country, both front and back are white.

Kinsters · 25/01/2022 00:50

Can't say it's anything I've ever thought about/paid attention to. It's not exactly important, is it? They're all the same so it's just a background detail to the actual information ie the number on the plate.

I don't live in the UK and I'm not sure what colour my reg plates are. I think they're white...

Whoever asked about red plates - I think they're diplomatic plates. They are here anyway.

Kinsters · 25/01/2022 00:56

Ok red plates aren't diplomatic plates in the UK. And I just checked and mine are black with white letters so yeah, the colour of plates clearly isn't something that sticks in my mind. It's not like I don't look at number plates when driving - I often do because depending on where a car is from the starting letter of the registration is different and I like to see where cars are from.

noblegiraffe · 25/01/2022 01:01

Grin Errol

I thought I was on safe ground as the colours would be all wrong for a redshift.

SiobhanSharpe · 25/01/2022 01:36

In a similar vein, I am in Spain ATM and noticed that when we were at Portsmouth queuing to get onto the car ferry most British cars now have separate 'UK' stickers or magnetic badges on the rear, and not GB any more. (as ours still has).
Is this a Brexit thing? And what happens if you had the GB incorporated into your actual number plate, along with the EU stars symbol, as many people did? Are they illegal now?
(Sorry to derail. And i sort of knew about the yellow/white number plates but not the reason why. I know France had to get rid of black ones a few years ago and lots of people weren't happy about it. Here in Spain they are white front and back.)

PupInAPram · 25/01/2022 01:37

I've never noticed it. Never had an accident either despite driving very long distances in a former job. Can all those being so superior about those who haven't noticed confirm that they are accident free, since clearly knowing this makes you a better driver Hmm

OffRoadFozzyBear · 25/01/2022 03:22

@Blankspace4

In some US states they don’t have front number plates at all. And the brake lights and indicators are both red, which is a bit strange
Not all cars in the US. Mine has orange indicators.

Did you know each state has different plates? They are often decorative. And within each state there are multiple options for plates too. Some of them are really nice.

GlitterSquid · 25/01/2022 03:58

The petrol pump thing is a fallacy.
On SOME cars there's an arrow.
On SOME cars, the side of the symbol at which the pump nozzle is placed (to the left or right) shows the side of which the fuel neck is on, and on SOME cars it's the opposite as dash panels are interchangeable between their brand and foreign counterpart (say Vauxhall/Opel).
It's a fairly unreliable 'rule of thumb'.

ElftonWednesday · 25/01/2022 04:09

Jesus, I've known this since I was a little kid. How could you not know?

Pyewhacket · 25/01/2022 04:17

@WitchWithoutChips

What. The. Fuck. This thread.
Has to be a wind up.
ElftonWednesday · 25/01/2022 04:30

As to the Highway Code being guidance not law - some of it is, some of it is guidance, depending on whether it says should or must. If anyone has passed their theory test you should know this.

I didn't do a theory test, 26 years ago. But recently I did the full online practice test, thinking I'd do badly and need to brush up my knowledge and got 100%.

Did you never have long car journeys as a kid, gazing out of the window, counting red cars, blue cars and noticing all sorts of things about them?

Also the UK vs GB on cars/number plates change is recent, but yes it does apply if you had GB incorporated into your number plate.

www.schengenvisainfo.com/news/gb-car-stickers-no-longer-valid-for-uk-travellers-driving-in-eu/#:~:text=The%20%E2%80%9CGB%E2%80%9D%20sticker%2C%20which,one%20that%20says%20%E2%80%9CUK%E2%80%9D.

Before that, the GB number plate rule was slightly rubbish (to say the least) for Northern Ireland numberplates, as NI is in the UK but not Great Britain. Which will be news to some people here, I'm sure. Though you are in good company with whoever stated that the original rule would be GB not UK.

sashh · 25/01/2022 05:31

@Staragain

I’m Irish and I knew that! We played Yellow Reg no digs as kids. When you saw a yellow reg (rare enough in 80s Ireland, you could box your sibling and they couldn’t retaliate). We still play it if we’re ever in a car with together.
We played 'punch wagon', a VW beetle was a punch wagon and if you saw it first you got to punch the other.

My brother is 2 years older than me, I also needed glasses but didn't get them until I was 11, I'm sure I still have bruises.

BarbaraofSeville · 25/01/2022 07:26

Well this explains a lot. I've always been astonished that so many people seem to be completely unaware of the prescription prepayment certificate, despite there being a notice about it in every pharmacy in the country, as per any discussion about prescription costs in England where people go on about how expensive they are, when no-one has to pay more than £10 a month.

But not knowing what colour number plates are in the UK unless you've literally just arrived here is terrifying if you drive and like saying you've never heard of the Royal Family or Post Offices.
