I remember me and my friends doing this as kids, but DH doesn't think it's a thing. Was it just my friends or does anyone else remember doing this?

OP posts:

@over50andfab

Yes - make a wish as cutting the cake and scream when it touches the bottom. Yorkshire but boarding schools Bucks and Kent.
I was all girls boarding school oxon Definitely a tradition
PyongyangKipperbang · 23/01/2022 22:58

Only time it happened in our house was when DC6 was about 2 and I wasnt thinking when I cut the cake up and the knife went through Peppa Pigs head, she went INSANE! I mean Exorcist level barmy!

In the end we had to mend the cake and go without!

The next year she was cheerfully cutting off Iggle Piggles head herself, little weirdo :o

GoatsareGOAT · 23/01/2022 22:58

Yes!
Left foot on the table, knife upside down, scream at the moment the knife touched the plate (while you wished)

Late 80s maybe into early 90s
Edinburgh.

Wallywobbles · 23/01/2022 22:59

We do it. Mr step kids won't though. Bit up-tight!

CheeseMmmm · 23/01/2022 22:59

Not me as far as I can remember! 80s primary age.

99% sure no!

Immediate reaction on reading was that it's hurting the cake! Yes I know just me! I wouldn't like it though for that reason, cake murder is sad.

Tell me that you are joking?!
MegaClutterSlut · 23/01/2022 23:02

I've never heard of this Confused

CheeseMmmm · 23/01/2022 23:02

Personally the idea of a whole bunch of 9yo screaming top voice sounds ouch for ears.

So glad not!

Never saw (heard) when mine primary either only few years ago.

DH also baffled he primary few years after me.

You do you OP! Assume you have earplugs! Grin

GoatsareGOAT · 23/01/2022 23:02

PyongyangKipperbang nope it was very important & we all did it. Groups of girls now I think of it- I don't remember any male friends doing the same.

Hugoslavia · 23/01/2022 23:02

The Sistine Chapel comments went straight over my head. Can someone explain?

Squeakerfoot · 23/01/2022 23:03

@RavenclawDiadem

Yes, there must have been an issue with devil-possessed cakes back in the day. As this doesn't seem to happen anymore I assume the screaming worked and the cake demons have been exorcised.

BlackboardMonitorVimes · 23/01/2022 23:03

80s Essex. I didn't do it but I remember another kid doing it at their birthday party. So it was definitely a thing, but not everyone did it. No idea why though.

Enjoy

greenteafiend · 23/01/2022 23:11

S Yorkshire, yes, remember doing this!
Honestly, it's a two second scream, hardly anything to write home about in the context of all the screaming that goes on at a kids' party anyway.

lilyfire · 23/01/2022 23:11

Grew up 70s and 80s in NW London never heard of it. About 10 years ago went to a party for my friend same age and she grew up SW London and she and her children screeched when the cutting knife hit the cake plate freaking us all out. Obviously normal to them.

Princesspickle777 · 23/01/2022 23:13

Erm no Confused (north west if it helps)

godmum56 · 23/01/2022 23:14

nope no never

kindlyensure · 23/01/2022 23:16

Yes! You all have to chant "scream when you get to the bottom!" and then do a little 'eek' (not a full on scream).

PrincessPaws · 23/01/2022 23:17

Never heard of that

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 23/01/2022 23:19

I’ve NEVER heard of this

Grew up in 1980s (teenager in 90s) in SE, just outside London. Then at Uni knew a lot of people from boarding school. I’ve never seen or heard of this as a thing at all.

JugglingJanuary · 23/01/2022 23:21

@Balonziaga

I had forgotten this, but yes! South West London - 70s and 80s.

I remember a friend saying that the screaming was 'to get the devil out of the cake'.

Bonkers.

I wonder if it would take the carbs out instead?

I hate screaming, never heard of this before (SE Surrey 70's/80's) but I'd consider it if it would scare the carbs away,,,

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 23/01/2022 23:24

What?? ‘80s London kid and never heard of such a thing!

FoamBurst · 23/01/2022 23:25

Nope sorry

Probably a horcrux.

SofiaSoFar · 23/01/2022 23:31

Good god! screaming?? That's fucking hideous. Shock

Thankfully I've never experienced, or even heard of, this before.
