Screaming when you cut a birthday cake

I remember me and my friends doing this as kids, but DH doesn't think it's a thing. Was it just my friends or does anyone else remember doing this?

This is so weird 😂 wasn't a thing in my bit of SE London in the 80s!!

Ziggerty · 23/01/2022 22:36

Yes, I grew up in Hampshire in the 90s.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 23/01/2022 22:40

Interestingly I just Googled it and found nothing apart from the Danish custom, which is a separate thing.

poppinpink · 23/01/2022 22:40

@kierenthecommunity

Did you have your parties in the Sistine Chapel? 🤔
😆😆
Lemonata · 23/01/2022 22:40

That sounds awful for the parents🤣

Never heard of it, I was born late 90’s and lived in the NorthWest.

fuckyourpronouns · 23/01/2022 22:42

What??

RavenclawDiadem · 23/01/2022 22:43

Kids even cutting the cake is weird to me. At most parties I went to, and that my kids went to, the birthday child blows out the candles and then the cake is whisked away for cutting by an adult.

BashfulClam · 23/01/2022 22:43

Eh?

TheRemotePart · 23/01/2022 22:43

Hahhahahahaaa
NO!?
WHY!? WHAT IS THE REASON? Grin

I suppose it makes as much sense as giving someone “bumps” for their birthday?

YourVagesty · 23/01/2022 22:43

Wtf!?

amusedbush · 23/01/2022 22:44

@mynameiscalypso

I don't get why people think it's so awful? Birthday parties are generally pretty noisy and full of people screaming anyway!
Because I’m autistic and from the age of 2 I would have a meltdown when people sang happy birthday (not even to me, just in general) - my mum would have to take me away to calm down. I still have to beg people not to sing it to me now that I’m an adult. I react really badly to unexpected or loud noises so people full-on screaming all around me would send me non-verbal and completely ruin the day. It seems so unnecessary and I can’t see the fun in it!
ScrambledSmegs · 23/01/2022 22:45

I remember this happening at one birthday party I went to (80s, London) and assuming it was a weird family thing as the rest of us were mystified. Had no idea there were more cake screamers out there.

amusedbush · 23/01/2022 22:46

*that should say ‘when people even sang happy birthday, never mind other kids screaming and running around.

blessedbethechocolate · 23/01/2022 22:49

Never heard of it and I grew up in Surrey during the 80/90s. Im glad it wasn't a thing as I would probably have ran away crying as I could barely cope being the centre of attention as it was.

Crunchymum · 23/01/2022 22:49

Born and bred Londoner (80's child as well) but nope it's not something I've ever come across.

I think I'd be quite alarmed to encounter it, but am very intrigued at the same time.

Have just had 2 birthday's in the family, wish I'd seen this thread before we'd had the cakes. Could have livened things up a bit Grin

Squeakerfoot · 23/01/2022 22:50

80s/90s South London, yes. I remember someone saying it was to let the devil out.

RightOnTheEdge · 23/01/2022 22:51

No, I have never heard of this before! We moved around quite a lot when I was young but I've never come across this anywhere.

BasiliskFace · 23/01/2022 22:53

We didn’t do it as little kids. We did it as teens in the sixth form - everyone brought a cake in when it was their birthday. Girls school, if that makes a difference…
RavenclawDiadem · 23/01/2022 22:54

Are devil possessed cakes problematic in South London?
nevergoesaway · 23/01/2022 22:54

This is one of the most bizarre things I’ve ever heard of! Grin Definitely not a thing in my world or anyone I know.

It’s almost as weird as the idea of rhyming “one” with “bun”!

IveNameChangedAgain2020 · 23/01/2022 22:55

Yes!! Londoner too. I told someone to do this the other day and they looked at me like I was batshit 😂😂

Boxbox2 · 23/01/2022 22:55

This thread is hilarious. I'm here trying to emulate the screams quietly to myself and just can't imagine how it'd sound when full volume Grin

I suppose I've always said "yaaaay" or similar as the knife hits the board but I'd never scream it, and I'm one of the biggest extroverts I know!

Luredbyapomegranate · 23/01/2022 22:56

No, and now they’ll be a whole other thread about the horrible hygiene failure of screaming over a cut cake OP WHAT HAVE YOU DONE 😱🎂🦠🦠🦠🦠🦠🦠🦠🦠🦠🦠🦠🦠🦠🦠🦠

XiCi · 23/01/2022 22:57

Another one who's never heard of this, sounds bizarre
WheelieBinPrincess your account of your boss cutting the cake has had me crying with laughter here Grin

RogerDodger · 23/01/2022 22:58

No. Thank fuck.
