Screaming when you cut a birthday cake

I remember me and my friends doing this as kids, but DH doesn't think it's a thing. Was it just my friends or does anyone else remember doing this?

70/80s west of London. Never heard of it.

TaylorsSwimShorts · 23/01/2022 21:31

Yep...ear piercing screams from all the kids when the knife hits the board...every...birthday....🙄 no idea why its a thing, I'm 42 and all the cousins did it as kids and now our kids are 3-17 and all do it, we are from London 🙄

Cyclingforcake · 23/01/2022 21:32

Yes definitely a thing. 1980s SE.

Velvetbee · 23/01/2022 21:33

No.

WheelieBinPrincess · 23/01/2022 21:34

@RaskolnikovsGarret

Ok so my very serious lawyer boss came in in her very smart somber work clothes, sat at the table, we produced the chocolate cake I’d made with the children, and passed her the cake slice.

As she cut it she screeched ‘ARGHHHHHHH’

I thought she’d found one of their bogeys, you know what children can be like when they’re baking.

I was very alarmed but the children clapped gaily and said ‘well done mummy!’

TheLeadbetterLife · 23/01/2022 21:34

I first encountered this when I was 19, at the birthday of a posh friend of a friend. It was bizarre, I didn’t know what the hell was going on for a second. Only seemed to be quite posh people who had ever heard of it.

Gilly12345 · 23/01/2022 21:34

No, never heard of this sorry.

ChrisAnneTheMum · 23/01/2022 21:35

No, thank God.

TheLazyBeagle · 23/01/2022 21:36

Never heard of it and I have to say I’m glad 😂, sounds awful.

Tardigrade001 · 23/01/2022 21:36

Kids do it all the time now. It's a sort of excited scream.

CandyCaneLane0 · 23/01/2022 21:36

😂 never heard of it

RaskolnikovsGarret · 23/01/2022 21:37

Thanks, WheelieBin! That sounds hilarious! It’s DD1’s 21st birthday this week, so I think it’s a good time to start a new tradition.

BuffaloHigh · 23/01/2022 21:37

Yes, Surrey. 90s. I don’t remember doing it when I was little. Probably 7+ into teenage years?

marlowe5 · 23/01/2022 21:37

Nope - 70s and 80s South London and never saw or heard this.

Chelsea26 · 23/01/2022 21:38

I heard of this at uni when two of my housemates did it - they were both Jewish so I assumed it was a Jewish thing but maybe not???

We all grew up in 1980’s. I was West London, they both grew up in North London.

WeatherwaxOn · 23/01/2022 21:38

@kierenthecommunity

Did you have your parties in the Sistine Chapel? 🤔
Damn! I came here to say that. Grin
pumpkinpieintheski · 23/01/2022 21:38

Yes! 1980s too - south london! Was definitely a thing at mine and all my friends bdays when we were little!

MsRosewater · 23/01/2022 21:39

Yup- South Africa in the late 80s / early 90s

BurnDownTheDiscoHangTheDJ · 23/01/2022 21:39

For balance, London and Essex in the 80s and 90s... Not a thing here.

technosausage · 23/01/2022 21:39

Yes!

RaskolnikovsGarret · 23/01/2022 21:39

I’ve been in North London since 1990 and never seen it. I’m definitely not posh but some of our friends are, but I’ve never seen them do it either.

cherryonthecakes · 23/01/2022 21:40

Grew up in London and we did this too but not every party.

AdaColeman · 23/01/2022 21:40

No, never heard of it, thank heavens! I would have soon put a stop to it if any little guests had tried it!

🥳 🥳 🥳 🥳 🥳

User478 · 23/01/2022 21:40

Yes! Was compulsory at the first boarding school I went to, unheard of at the second. You also had to have one foot on the table as you were cutting.

IHateCoronavirus · 23/01/2022 21:40

Never heard of it. Might start doing it though to see if we can get rid of our troublesome neighbours.
