I'm so pleased with myself

DH died last year and there are an embarrassing number of things I have never tried my hand at.

We also seem to have had a run of things going wrong in the house. The latest is a broken push button flush on the toilet.

So, I took it apart, took photos of the mechanism inside the cistern and went to the scary plumbers merchant with the bits. Asked him if he could sell me a new one. He had a good look but said they didn't appear to stock what I needed. I nearly left, but instead said "OK then what do I need to do" and maybe he felt sorry for me or maybe he remembered he was there to offer the customer some service Grin but he said if you bring a photo of the mechanism I'll find it for you. I'd already got that so there was no backing out for him!

He found the part I needed on line and I ordered it from Amazon (I know, but free next day delivery). It's arrived and I've fitted it and it works!

I know it's not much, but I am so pleased with myself. Maybe I can do this after all Smile

£10 v what, at least £80 if I'd called a plumber?

Fantastic!

purpleme12 · 23/01/2022 13:34

Wow that's really good!
I don't think I'd even be able to do that 🙄

onitlikeacarbonnet · 23/01/2022 13:50

I'm not surprised you're chuffed with yourself! Well done.
I felt the same when I painted the skirting boards all on my ownsome!

Cherrysherbet · 23/01/2022 13:59

Well done op! You’ve got this.

BluebellsGreenbells · 23/01/2022 13:59

We grew up poor and these things are more likely to be a quick and easy fix I’ve done several toilets, unplumbed sinks and decorated, fixed cars etc -

That said DH wouldn’t even try!

Imabitbusyatthemoment · 23/01/2022 14:00

Brilliant! Well done OP.

FindingMeno · 23/01/2022 14:03

Much admiration for your can do attitude.

MaybeHeIsMyCat · 23/01/2022 14:05

Yay!! Not as impressive but this week I have
Hung some pictures up
Taken the kitchen sink draining apart to find where a smell was coming from Blush
The first DIY thing I ever did was painting my hallway which has 6 doors to cut in around never again and it felt amazing when it was done

Dsisproblem · 23/01/2022 14:10

I'm impressed! Well done OP!

NannyGythaOgg · 23/01/2022 14:13

Well done

You tube can be your friend for many jobs - including knowing when to give up and call the tradesman - which is not all that often in my experience.

Sunnysidegold · 23/01/2022 14:28

I'm sorry for your loss,op.

Well done for doing something like this.

Robin233 · 23/01/2022 19:34

2DogsOnMySofa · 23/01/2022 19:37

Well done op. I used to do this when I lived on my own. It's so satisfying Thanks

JugglingJanuary · 23/01/2022 19:41

Well done!! Bask in the glory!!

I moved in here by myself, the bathroom needed replacing but I had to wait, in the meantime I had to replace various bits, including a whole new toilet cistern (it cracked)

It's amazing what you can learn to do when you have to!!

I had an accident last year that's rendered me pretty bloody useless & possibly for the long term. SO frustrating!! Do what you can, while you can!

Enjoy every flush!!

insatiableme · 23/01/2022 19:54

Amazing, well done Op. it's such a good feeling when you have accomplished something you wouldn't normally do or wouldn't think of doing. Also, sorry for your loss.

AllAmericanGirl · 23/01/2022 21:07

Well done, that's truly awesome.

DiddyHeck · 23/01/2022 21:10

Well done OP. It can be truly scary at first learning the jobs that men have traditionally always done. I've taken the plunge in the past and then wondered what all the fuss was about, much to my husband's embarrassment Grin

Mossstitch · 23/01/2022 21:24

Well done💐............ Will you come and fix mine🙏 I've managed to rig up a temporary solution with an elastic band and you can flush it by leaving the top of the cistern off and getting a wet hand but it's not a permanent solution! I'm dreading visitors asking to use it😳 😂

Pixiesfan · 23/01/2022 21:27

You should be proud! Well done OP

CloudPop · 23/01/2022 21:28

🙌

uncomfortablydumb53 · 23/01/2022 22:00

That's a great achievement
I'm sorry for your loss

hivemindneeded · 23/01/2022 22:06

I am massively impressed by this. You deserve to feel pleased with yourself. It would be an achievement anyway but under the stress you've been dealing with, it's even more impressive.

hivemindneeded · 23/01/2022 22:06

PS - our downstairs loo keeps draining slowly - what's your call out charge?
