I'm so pleased with myself

DH died last year and there are an embarrassing number of things I have never tried my hand at.

We also seem to have had a run of things going wrong in the house. The latest is a broken push button flush on the toilet.

So, I took it apart, took photos of the mechanism inside the cistern and went to the scary plumbers merchant with the bits. Asked him if he could sell me a new one. He had a good look but said they didn't appear to stock what I needed. I nearly left, but instead said "OK then what do I need to do" and maybe he felt sorry for me or maybe he remembered he was there to offer the customer some service Grin but he said if you bring a photo of the mechanism I'll find it for you. I'd already got that so there was no backing out for him!

He found the part I needed on line and I ordered it from Amazon (I know, but free next day delivery). It's arrived and I've fitted it and it works!

I know it's not much, but I am so pleased with myself. Maybe I can do this after all Smile

£10 v what, at least £80 if I'd called a plumber?

Well done. We have a top push button loo, and I don't even know how to take the cistern off Blush

With plumbing it's mostly really doable yourself with YouTube.

Otherwise pay once and watch carefully, take photos and notes.

Our upstairs boiler room has arrows on the wall by every switch, tap etc saying which way it should go.

Diagrams and photos are your friends.

That's huge from where you started from.

Well done. I have found there is very little that You Tube doesn't have a tutorial on.

I fixed my tumble dryer for a £7.99 belt and re-upholstered my dining room chairs for the price of fabric and a heavy duty staple gun.

It's very satisfying.

Fairyliz · 24/01/2022 19:46

Wow well done op.
Where do you live, we have exactly the same problem and unfortunately DH is worse than me at this sort of thing.

I'd willingly pay you plumbers fee, you can't get one for small jobs like this.

DixiePeach · 24/01/2022 19:47

Im sorry for your loss. had a leaking loo last week and I wouldn’t have had a clue where to start. I’m not surprised you are feeling proud at having sorted it yourself well done.

ClutterofStarlings · 24/01/2022 19:53

It’s great isn’t it? Cultivate your local trade centres/ small hardware stores (the ones that have been there since the dark ages) they can be so,so helpful, and often ‘have one of those left out the back’.

Good for you OP StarSmile
