Favourite Meat Loaf song or lyrics

I am so upset to hear Meat Loaf has passed away. I am listening to For Crying Out Loud and wondering if I could choose my favourite song or lyrics. There are so many I might find it impossible to choose. My brother had the album Bat Out Of Hell and it was one of the soundtracks to my childhood from around age 4. We still have the LPGrin My brother saw him live in Germany back in the 80s and said he was awesome.
My two current favourites are Bat out of Hell and Heaven Can Wait but this might change by the end of the weekend. I'll have to have a think about lyrics.
Please share yours in honour of such a fantastic performer who brought joy to sp many.

All revved up with no place to go is pure brilliance. Also love Paradise by the dashboard light. Spent many an hour getting word perfect in the 70s & 80s. Rest in Peace Meat Loaf.

EpicGem · 21/01/2022 21:27

I'm between Not a Dry Eye in The House, which was played at my Dad's funeral. He was a big Meat Loaf fan and introduced me to the music. My other favourite would be Life Is A Lemon (And I Want My Money Back).

So many
But Paradise by the dashboard light reminds me of making out with my first love in his mum's Fiesta
Years down the line ,very happily married, but listening to Bat tonight,2 glasses of wine down, and I am back there

tigger1001 · 21/01/2022 21:40

Don know if I could choose just one! Reading all these posts just reminds me how many great songs there are.

He was my first real music love and I saw him live several times.

Am just so sad today.

EssexLioness · 21/01/2022 21:40

Objects in the Rear View Mirror is really poignant

I was a teen when I Would Do Anything For Love came out. I remember the first time I saw the video (on TOTP I believe). It was so dramatic and over-the-top captivating. I had never seen anything like it before. It does annoy me though when people ask what it is that he wouldn’t do for love - it literally says in the song!

I like all his big hits but wouldn’t say I was a fan as such because I am not familiar with his lesser known work. So I was surprised how sad the news of his death made me. I felt quite teary. He always seems a genuinely nice man in interviews and had so many struggles in his life.

Sweetchocolatecandy · 21/01/2022 21:42

Two out of three ain’t bad can make me cry in an instant- in fact, most of his songs can. They speak to the soul.

Chickydoo · 21/01/2022 22:29

The music of my teens.
The long intro to Bat out of Hell, then he sings 🦇 🏍 🤘
🎶🎵
'The sirens are screaming, and the fires are howling
Way down in the valley tonight
There's a man in the shadows with a gun in his eye
And a blade shining oh so bright
There's evil in the air and there's thunder in the sky,
And a killer's on the bloodshot streets
And down in the tunnels where the deadly are rising
Oh, I swear I saw a young boy down in the gutter
He was starting to foam in the heat'

Sends shivers down my spine every time. Just watched the program on BBC 4, loved it!
Saw ML live..,the best concert I have ever been to. What a showman!!!

MimsyBorogroves · 21/01/2022 22:33

Is Nothing Sacred is bloody beautiful.

MrsGinnyM · 21/01/2022 22:34

Meat's own favourite songs were For Crying Out Loud and Martha.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 22/01/2022 10:50

My favourite #Misheardlyrics has got to be

Cilla Black Phantom bike ... yes I know it's Silver & Black Phantom bike but just love sing about Cilla

I went further and thought it was 'I'm gonna hit the highway like a battering ram or a Cilla Black fan on a bike' - like the two were broadly comparable in their power and terror Grin

I also love:

Can't you hear the planet groanin' like a broken down machine
Rusted with the guilty tears of fallen kings and queens

No man can stop me
Their words won't sting you
No dreams will haunt me
Where angels sing

So wander down the ancient hallway
Taking the stairs only one at a time
Follow the sound of my heartbeat now
I'm in the room at the top, you're at the end of the line
Open the door and lay down on the bed
The sun is just a ball of desire

You can't run away forever
But there's nothing wrong with getting a good head start
You want to shut out the night
You want to shut down the sun
You want to shut away the pieces of a broken heart

All I got is time until the end of time

BalloonSlayer · 22/01/2022 11:49

I don't know what the real words are but in Dead Ringer For Love, when he sings "You got the kind of legs that do more than walk," to me, Cher's reply is "I don't have to listen to this wankerish talk."

I don't think I want to know what the real words are actually

ToffeeNotCoffee · 22/01/2022 16:20

Meatloaf: You got the kinda legs that do more than walk.

Cher: I don't want to listen to your one more retort.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 22/01/2022 16:25

I think it's meant to be 'your whimpering talk'.

BalloonSlayer · 22/01/2022 17:00

Noooooooooooo, I don't want to knoooooow!!!!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 22/01/2022 17:07

Sorry, BalloonSlayer - I've just double-checked my sources and it turns out that you were correct all along Smile

GorgeousLadyofWrestling · 22/01/2022 17:22

Grew up listening to Bat out of Hell thanks to my parents love of Meat Loaf. Steinem was an absolute lyricist genius and Meat Loaf was the only person who could do them justice.

Favourites are
Read Em and Weep
I’m gonna love her for the both of us
For crying out loud
2 out of 3 ain’t bad

So many brilliant lines in all those. For crying out loud is just beautiful. Though I still don’t really understand “can’t you see my faded Levi’s bursting apart” Blush

Grew up watching Bat out of Hell on video as my parents would play it over and over so knew the lyrics to Paradise by the Dashboard Light very well from a young age. I can’t sing at all but I remember lyrics very well - usually after only listening to a song one time - and would sing it to my friends at primary school Grin

GorgeousLadyofWrestling · 22/01/2022 17:28

Wait hold on - I just googled. Is it about his erection??? But it’s such a sweet song!

MrsGinnyM · 22/01/2022 17:33

Meat would love how everyone is appreciating the lyrics. He said the lyrics were the most important thing to him. He didn't see it as rock opera as some people describe it, rather acting a part - he got into a different character for each song.

MrsGinnyM · 22/01/2022 17:40

Cher's face when they were on Wogan together and Meat was having a Shakespearean moment suggests she was thinking just that!
Puzzledandpissedoff · 22/01/2022 17:43

For crying out loud (surprised mord haven't named that one!!)

Heaven can wait

And of course Bat out of hell itself

Thank you, Mr Music [sile]

Fireblanket · 22/01/2022 17:47

I remember Dead Ringer for Love being the first song I heard where I realised that it's OK for a woman, too, to really want a shag!

GorgeousLadyofWrestling · 22/01/2022 17:49

Read Em and weep is just genius.

For all the hours we'll be spending alone (read 'em and weep)
For the dreams we'll ignore (it's running silent and deep)
And all those promises we promised to keep
They won't be kept any more (read 'em and weep)
For the magic that our bodies had made (read 'em and weep)
For the blood that we lost (it's running silent and deep)
And all the secrets that we somehow betrayed
For whatever the cost (read 'em and weep)
For the memories still alive in the bed (read 'em and weep)
For the lies we believed (it's running silent and deep)
And all the things that can never be said
Why don't you look at me and read 'em and weep?

grannyjacob · 22/01/2022 17:54

My late big brother wasn’t really a music buff, but he did like both Abba and Meat Loaf, as evidenced by them being the only CDs in his car after he died. We picked Heaven Can Wait as one of his cremation service songs, that was nine years ago and I still can’t listen to it without crying.
Bat Out of Hell must surely be one of the best albums ever. I’ve been playing it for the last few hours, neighbours are probably getting a bit cheesed off by now.
