What’s Putin up to in the Ukraine?

I mean, I know you probabaly don’t all actually know 😀
But ages ago there was a thread about Kim Jong who looked like he was gearing up for Armageddon at the time, and some very knowledgeable posters came along and explained why it was all a storm in a tea cup and I felt a lot better.
Should we be worried about this?
JanuaryBluehoo · 19/01/2022 21:08
Op I'm glad you asked because it seems like everyone is obsessed with party gate and yet it looks like a serious war that we have sent troops too may be about to kick off
It's terryying!
PoshPyjamas · 19/01/2022 22:35
Just us then
Sheabutterisdelish · 19/01/2022 22:36
Me too!!
Fordian · 19/01/2022 22:39
Watching nervously.
All I can say is that, as knocking 60, we've been here before. Many times.
Breathe.
JanuaryBluehoo · 19/01/2022 22:52
What on earth is he trying to gain? What's the point?? It must be costing a fortune.
I wish Putin would bugger off! Let Russia be a democracy etc
Hellocatshome · 19/01/2022 22:52
If anyone is going to start a completely pointless war I feel it will be Putin.
MsWalterMitty · 19/01/2022 22:54
I’ve been watching this too!
I know Trump was a tool, but Biden is scaring me!
JanuaryBluehoo · 19/01/2022 23:01
Trump was anti war
MsWalterMitty · 19/01/2022 23:05
@JanuaryBluehoo
I know
ChardonnaysPetDragon · 19/01/2022 23:07
He doesn't need to start a war. He has Europe in his hold with the gas pipeline.
He needs to be seen as strong, and he cannot be seen to lose his face in Ukraine. Biden will back off.
MsWalterMitty · 19/01/2022 23:09

This is why i wondered why Germany weren’t getting involved… because of pipelines
ChardonnaysPetDragon · 19/01/2022 23:12
It's a long cold winter. Why is he doing in now you think?
Donotgogentle · 19/01/2022 23:18
I’m not sure Biden’s the problem here.
I’ve assumed Putin wants to bolster his domestic position and antagonise the EU.
PlanktonsComputerWife · 19/01/2022 23:20
Biden is an almighty shithead.
Lolamento · 19/01/2022 23:24
We are going to start seen Angela Merkel real legacy.
Fordian · 19/01/2022 23:28

For fear of controversy, Russia doesn't want to be democracy 'again'. It really hasn't been for a long time.
Look around. Much of the world is fleeing towards 'strong man' nationalistic, xenophobic, exclusionary dictatorial governments; inc the USA and to an extent, UK.
I grew up (I'm almost 60)!with the myth that the whole planet was gradually 'evolving' toward a what we might call 'western, capitalist democracy '. We didn't understand human nature.
We are tribal people. If our Big Man appears to be thumping his chest more than another, we vote for him. The weak cluster behind him for protection, sometimes lulled by a sense of security.
Our human existence is far more 'this' than than 'western style democracy'.
Donotgogentle · 19/01/2022 23:28
@PlanktonsComputerWife
How’s he responsible for Putin’s aggression?
ChardonnaysPetDragon · 19/01/2022 23:29
I’m not sure Biden’s the problem here.
Yeah, he did so well in Afghanistan. Maybe his mess there is what made Putin he can get away with anything. That and Germany's dependency.
MyMoneyIsAllSpent · 19/01/2022 23:36
I wouldn't be surprised if both Russia and China make a move soon.
Short video, been following this guy for some time.
Booklover3 · 19/01/2022 23:56
Ah it’s not looking great
Sheabutterisdelish · 20/01/2022 04:17
Still not enlightened as to what's going on ?
Slingingcontest · 20/01/2022 04:45
This is a reasonably good explanation:

@PoshPyjamas
Unrelated to the current situation and I hope you don’t mind, but here’s an article about why it’s “Ukraine” and not “the Ukraine”, which evidently Isn’t Ukrainian people find offensive. I didn’t know about this myself until recently until someone clarified so just passing on the knowledge

I don’t know where the stray “Isn’t” in my post came from. It should read “evidently Ukrainian people…”
