What is the horrendous grating metallic noise we keep hearing!

Really loud over the past few days about 6 times a grating sound. I think it's grinding metal DH thinks it's like brick. He's also googled and says the foundations of the house may be collapsing.

I think it's a screechy metallic noise, but it's loud.

Not air in the pipes.
The neighbour says all our roof tiles look secure
The house has no cracks anywhere
House build around 40 years ago.
Metal side gate is secure

We have solar panels and a roof arial but nothing has fallen down and it's not connected to winds. (No wind at all)

Can hear it all over the house it's so loud. I think it's above us, DH can't locate it.

Has anyone had something similar before our house falls down?

Tv Ariel etc moving about?

Bird or animal trapped in a chimney?

picklemewalnuts · 19/01/2022 18:37

Not a magpie?

ShirleyPhallus · 19/01/2022 18:39

Alexa gone loopy?

Maybe a ghost otherwise

Chickorma · 19/01/2022 18:40

Can your neighbours hear it?

Make notes of exactly what is happening when you hear it. E.g. time, weather, if the heating is on, any vehicles going past. That could help narrow things down

Unescorted · 19/01/2022 18:40

Rats chewing through your central heating pipes (I say this from a position of experience)

Shapiro · 19/01/2022 18:41

Is your house built on anything other than normal land? Such as mine shafts, land fill or ancient burial ground?

ProudDada · 19/01/2022 18:41

What type of house? Our neighbours seem to regularly sweep their chimney and we hear the grating all through the house.

Can you record the sound and post it up?

Helenahandkart · 19/01/2022 18:59

We get this a lot when birds are walking around on the roof pulling out moss. When we first moved in I thought it was burglars on the roof it was so loud.

Maybe arial but we've never heard it before, and its still in place.

Bird caught in the metal flue ?

inheritancetrack · 19/01/2022 19:05

We've only heard it around 6 times and it lasts 2-4 seconds but its really loud. Its a detached house so neighbours can't hear us, and one house is empty and the other the owner stays away with his gf nearly all the time.

No wind

Only past few days

Definitely not birds

We do live in an old mining area but no signs anywhere of subsistance.

Just occurs randomly

And it makes us jump out of our skins

No time to record it its so random

doesnt sound like rats chewing pipes

It sounds like a sharp, sudden, metallic grinding noise. Can't explain better as i've never heard anything like it.

What does shifting foundations sound like? Surely we would have cracks.

Now terrified a sinkhole will open up and swallow us

Bird caught in the metal flue ?
I dont think we have any metal flues. Would be dead anyway by now as it started a week ago.

Detached. Two empty houses on either side anyway. Weird

Central heating pump packing up?

Redeyed · 19/01/2022 19:16

When part of our aerial was loose, the square bit became loose from the other bit, it was a metallic squeaking sound. It was fairly loud, but you couldn't hear it over music etc. The sound echoed down the chimney breast too.

Alsz · 19/01/2022 19:18

Plumbing/pipes/valves ? These could be in the loft.

bigbeatmanifesto · 19/01/2022 19:20

Frozen pipe somewhere?

inheritancetrack · 19/01/2022 19:34

Does it sound very loud and like metal grinding? I wonder if its this as its around the area I can hear it that our boiler is??

Have emailed the solar panel people to see if they can check our roof but will definitely look into the pump. Central heating is working perfectly though.

Will go into the loft at the weekend to check the pipes.

Probably not as I know you say it's higher up, but just in case - could it be your washing machine packing up? Ours made the most horrendous screeching noises when it was on the way out.

flatpack1 · 19/01/2022 19:52

I have had a noise like that a couple of times with the boiler. When I phoned them I said it was like there was a dinosaur in the boiler cupboard. They send an engineer who cleans it all out and then its ok.

UsernameInTheTown · 19/01/2022 19:56

Solar panels are too heavy for the roof and slowly caving it in?

No washing machine on

@flatpack1 Its either the boiler or the solar panels or the arial.
