What is the horrendous grating metallic noise we keep hearing!

Really loud over the past few days about 6 times a grating sound. I think it's grinding metal DH thinks it's like brick. He's also googled and says the foundations of the house may be collapsing.

I think it's a screechy metallic noise, but it's loud.

Not air in the pipes.
The neighbour says all our roof tiles look secure
The house has no cracks anywhere
House build around 40 years ago.
Metal side gate is secure

We have solar panels and a roof arial but nothing has fallen down and it's not connected to winds. (No wind at all)

Can hear it all over the house it's so loud. I think it's above us, DH can't locate it.

Has anyone had something similar before our house falls down?

Washing machine bearings ? Is it when you have a wash on ?

My ceiling extractor fan in the bathroom packed up and it started screaching.

inheritancetrack · 19/01/2022 19:59

I know what it sounds like...

a garbage disposal thing. Not sure of british name, but my cousin has one and it sounded exactly the same, only went on for longer as it macerated a chicken and a load of unwanted food. We don't have one.

None of those things.

Our aerial was doing this so we had it taken down

educatingrati · 19/01/2022 20:06

Do you hear it throughout the day or is it more likely in the evening / nighttime / early morning?

EsmeraldaandTeenytiny · 19/01/2022 20:09

Our wood pellet boiler makes this noise when breaking down!

MoiraNotRuby · 19/01/2022 20:11

Do you have/know anyone with a drone who could have a look over everything on the roof?

Also do you have a zombie plan? If not maybe you should...

never heard it at night, but day and evening. no rhyme or reason, no high winds or anything we can think of

Top up.the pressure on the boiler? Ours made some horrible screeching noises when it was slow leaking and on its way out and when the pressure got down below a certain point.

Sonex · 19/01/2022 20:16

Is the heating always on when you hear it?

Not bothered by the zombie apocalypse as I will be at the bottom of a sinkhole Grin

I had this sound and it was the door opening and closing where my electric meter is on the outside wall

Ooh the boiler pressure looks to be on the low side, and it is in the area where the noise is. DH will top it up tomorrow, and the boiler is 17 years old Shock

yes.

I think @Sonex sounds like the winner Grin

AcidZumba · 19/01/2022 20:30

I think @Sonex is definitely the winner! I know the noise you mean and our central heating (I think it's the pump in the loft) makes the same noise when the in pressure is low- it's so loud isn't it!!

dudsville · 19/01/2022 20:32

Yikes, I hope it's your boiler.

retsamgreen · 19/01/2022 20:33

Our neighbor gas flue made this grinding loud noise

OublietteBravo · 19/01/2022 20:34

Do you have an en suite (or any bathroom) with a macerator? Ours made some very disturbing noises when it was on its last legs.

GlitterSquid · 19/01/2022 20:38

One of the doors on your gas/electric meters outside?

boolabingbo · 19/01/2022 20:42

If the heating you can get those magnet things fitted that stop debris in the pipes. Obviously I'm not a plumber, but we had one fitted in our old doer upper.

educatingrati · 19/01/2022 20:45

Okay, I asked re evening / nights, because we have bats, and when they are coming and going under the eves they make a metallic scraping sound....first time I heard it, it scared the bejesus out of me (I had been reading a ghost story earlier!). Might be worth checking for Blue-tits nesting too, as they are really good at finding teeny gaps in lose slates for nesting, and again it's quite an eerie sound, and surprisingly loud for such tiny wee beasts!
Failing that I can only think of a ghoul in the atticGrin

terrifying!

Ours was also 17 years old when it started doing this! We topped the pressure up every few weeks for a year or so then had it replaced. No noises since. Apparently the seals had gone.
