Manky suction shower mat - alternatives

Fed up of cleaning individual suction pads on our plastic shower mat with an old toothbrush to dislodge the dirt that festers around each suction pad. It's an extra long mat and life is too short.

We had a large shower cubicle installed and stupidly didn't get an anti slip tray. It's very slippy without a mat.

It seems to get really grimey. Wondering if we are especially filthy (2 teenage boys) or if this slimey, dirty debris is normal?

While said festering shower mat was drying this week, I used an old towel to stand on in the shower it was sodden at the end, but I simply threw it in the wash. It got me thinking about alternatives. Yup, I am that sad!

I've seen you can get anti slip stickers to put in showers, cork/wooden boards. Can anyone recommend an alternative?
I don't want to replace the plastic ones every few weeks before somebody suggests this.

Following, I ended up spraying bleach on mine and taking the kitchen scrubbing brush on a stalk to mine the other day. 'Orrid!

GlumyGloomer · 17/01/2022 12:33

When I had one I used to chuck it in the washing machine on a regular basis.

middleager · 17/01/2022 12:34

It's right up there with cleaning a sink plug.

I use a spray bleach too, but scum clings to each suction pad and I have to get right in there with a small brush or cotton bud.

I swear I lose hours a month to this thankless task.

I might try this, though knowing my luck it will disintegrate!

If you can persuade your family to stick/hang it after use, it will be a lot nicer.

Cheesewiz · 17/01/2022 12:36

You can buy stick on anti slip stickers, amazon and eBay have them

Cupcakegirl13 · 17/01/2022 12:42

Pull it up after after use to dry that elongates the time between cleans massively then I just spray with bleach and leave all day in the bath then shower off I rarely have to scrub individual sucker pads doing this.

Mine is machine washable. Once a week does the job and it's spotless after many months of use

Flipflopblowout · 17/01/2022 13:11

Stop using a shower mat and wear flipflops instead.

This is what I do

Thanks for the tips. Some helpful solutions.
Cheese I've been thinking about the strips but wonder if they will go manky/peel off?

Instead of one large suction mat we got a set of smaller 'character' suction pads - ours were green frogs. Spread around they gave enough traction. We pulled them up each time and left to dry in a rack. I rather enjoyed the game of flinging each one down on the shower floor with a satisfying slap. Periodically would give a quick soak in bleach water, scrubbing not needed.

middleager · 17/01/2022 14:17

Interesting! Might invrstigate those smaller pads, fewer filthy suckers to scrub!

Can you get one of those wooden trays to rest on top like they have in spas or wear flip-flops Grin

Iluvfriends · 17/01/2022 14:32

Pull off after each use and hang to dry and occasionally spray with bleach.

endofthelinefinally · 17/01/2022 14:37

If you rinse and hang up to dry after use it should be fine. I spray mine with bathroom cleaner when I clean the rest of the bathroom.

Wolowl · 17/01/2022 14:38

We've just ordered some of the anti slip stickers after seeing them recommended on another thread. I've slipped in the bath a couple of times but am now pregnant so really don't want to hurt myself!
They were from here - slipsaway.co.uk/
Although I do like the sound of the smaller, individual suction pads as I am worried about the stickers eventually coming off.

nodogz · 17/01/2022 14:43

Don't feel too bad about not getting an anti-slip tray in the shower. We've got one but it's often discoloured without regular bleaching

Bonbon21 · 17/01/2022 14:46

Throw mine in the wash with towels every week. 4 years old and looks like new.

Cocona · 17/01/2022 14:48

I've got these in the bath in the kids bathroom

They don't peel off and stay as clean (or dirty) as the bath does. Really good for stopping slipping.

We got the blue stars but they do transparent circles too.

Thanks for sharing, as I regretted going for a cheaper option. What a pain though!

I've just put it in the wash with some bath mats, as a stop gap.

Flip flops are also on the list.

I bunged mine in the washing machine, when I had one. They wash up a treat.
