I am in my early 40's. I have 2 kids and my body shows it. My face is red with broken capillaries and my hair is in desperate need of dying so my greying roots are very much visible. I am definitely no oil painting!

Today I went to buy cigarettes and I was asked for ID. I honestly swear I haven't been asked for ID since I was about 19!

I had my work ID on me which I could have used but I was so absolutely stunned that I looked slack jawed at the cashier and simply said 'no I don't have ID...because I'm 40!'

She told me I don't look over 25 with my mask on and I laughed at her and left the store without being served.

So I've decided the fact I have cleansed, toned, moisturised, used retinol and vit c serum for at least three days in a row is absolutely working

Clearly I have found the elixir of youth in a bottle. Happy to offer up my secrets to you all... Grin

Congratulations!!

I have colleagues in their late 20s who complain about being ID'd... but I'm with you on this one!

Notthissticky · 15/01/2022 20:36

Grin amazing!!!! I did a little happy dance when I was asked at 31. Five years, two kids and 30lbs on I can only dream...

pointythings · 15/01/2022 20:39

That's hilarious!

I've never been ID'd, but my late husband was ID'd in Disney in Florida when getting a beer. He was 53 at the time and told the bartender she was on his Christmas card list forever (he had ID on him).

I got asked for ID last year at 45. I was over the bloody moon! Realistically I think wearing masks makes it difficult to judge age though.

DowntonCrabby · 15/01/2022 20:43

Ok this is outing but my delightfully childlike, excitable Sister whom was asked by an Asda checkout lady on her 40th birthday for ID buying wine had the following conversation:

“Do you have ID?”

“no, I’m 40!! it’s my birthday today!!!! has my husband phoned and asked you to ID me for a treat?!!!” GrinGrin

Deadpan cashier “no, of course not, we wouldn’t do that, the rules are there for a reason, they’re not a joke dearie”

She bloody loves that story and being 10 years younger, not a million miles away from 40 now myself and having not been ID’d in 15 years I am find it equally hilarious and envy inducing!

The other DS, also later 30’s is regularly ID’d for lotto scratch cards. Blush

Clearly I have not inherited the same youthful looks.

I nearly kissed the manager in my local b&m in 2020....just turned 40, single mum, work full time, dd never sleeps through and was recovering from 3 weeks of campylobactor food poisoning...I brought a whole new definition to the phrase rough as fuck. The girl on the till asked for my id, gave her my driving licence and she called the manager over as she couldn't work out my age.

Manager came over and spent about 5 mins looking at my licence and the. At me before telling me I didn't look 18 let alone 40. When I stopped laughing I told him he was a crap liar and my new best mate. It definitely mad the queue smile 🤣🤣

Nisse23 · 15/01/2022 20:58

Last time I visited the U.K. I only had my EU country ID on me - which does have a DOB. I’m 30. I went to Waitrose and was refused service because I needed ‘English ID’ to he served. I tried challenging her by saying I live abroad, so of course I wouldn’t have a U.K. ID, and mine had a perfectly recognisable date of birth on it, but she insisted it was a U.K. driving license or passport, or nothing. I had to just walk out. It was super embarrassing. This was before face masks.

SweetPetrichor · 15/01/2022 21:01

I’d be really pleased to still get ID’d at 40. I’m 32 and I still get ID’d fairly regularly. It makes my day every time!

SpiderinaWingMirror · 15/01/2022 21:02

My neighbour was memorably asked for ID when buying a trowel in Homebase when she was 63.

Jinglemychristmasbells · 15/01/2022 21:05

With or without a mask I get asked for I'd I'm nearly 37. Even the midwife though I was younger.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 15/01/2022 21:05

I used to regularly use a shop with children in tow, including the odd bottle of wine or a few beers. No problems

One time I went alone, I got refused when trying to buy a flamethrower...

RedCandyApple · 15/01/2022 21:07

Argos wouldn’t sell me knives just before Xmas because I had no id... I’m 33 with 4 kids who were with me at the time so hardly a teen! Weren’t wearing a mask as exempt

juneybean · 15/01/2022 21:07

I got a thorough look at the other week when I was buying red bull. I'm 36!

purplecorkheart · 15/01/2022 21:08

I am nearly forty and up to recently get asked for id. A few of the shops/bars where I live often have days where every person is asked for age.

Hairyfriend · 15/01/2022 21:09

hehehe, that is brilliant!!! The cashier had obviously been reading a book about a killer on the loose in the allotments!!!
Pucarbuile · 15/01/2022 21:10

I was in the supermarket pre mask-life and was buying a bottle of wine at the self service checkout. It automatically flagged a customer service request. The 12 year old assistant who came over barely looked at me before hitting the "no id needed" button. I laughed, but man, that was cold.

DeltaAlphaDelta · 15/01/2022 21:11

I got ID'd a couple of years ago at 38 to buy fags, with an 8 inch long full beard. I've been going to clubs since I was 15 without the need for ID. The guy at the till was in agreement with me that I looked over 18, but as I looked younger than 25 (apparently Grin) he had to ask due to the store's ask 25 policy. As he agreed I was over 18, he didn't need to ask for it, god knows why he did.

GirlInACountrySong · 15/01/2022 21:15

everyones perception of over 25's is different....no biggie

just carry I.D

FuckingCheatingWanker · 15/01/2022 21:17

I got asked for ID for. Scratch card the other day in Tesco - I'm 43, made me day, it did ☺️

Justkeeppedaling · 15/01/2022 21:20

DD, 26, tried to buy paracetamol at Sainsbury's a while back. They wouldn't let her buy it because she didn't have ID with her. DH was waiting in the car, so she went back in with him. They wouldn't sell it to him either, because he might give it to DD. He pointed out that she was the one with the headache and the packet clearly states it's for 12+, but they wouldn't sell it to him!

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 15/01/2022 21:23

I was asked for ID when buying wine in teaco last year, she did give it me without the ID when I took sown my mask Blush

FrankieBoyleSezLoveOneAnother · 15/01/2022 21:24

DH was asked to pull his mask down when buying beer in the Co-Op a few weeks ago. He is 50. I am 46 and haven't been asked for ID since I was 16 Envy

HirplesWithHaggis · 15/01/2022 21:27

My 30yo son had ordered something online which required ID when delivered, but wasn't in when it arrived. So the driver asked for me to prove I'm over 18. I duly showed my driving licence, commenting that I was 18, plus 40 years... Driver didn't ask next time. Grin

TatianaBis · 15/01/2022 21:27

I sometimes wear my hair in plaits when I’m shopping. Sometimes I loop the plaits up onto my head a la Sylvia Plath/Pippi Longstocking.

The number of times I’ve been ID’d when I do is bizarre given that I’m 51.

Love to think I look underage but I think some people are just stupid.

MargaretThursday · 15/01/2022 21:29

I told the Sainsbury's person that I was insulted how quickly they'd pressed the "clearly over 25 button". He now age checks me every time. It's going to be a pain the day I've forgotten my ID, because once they've asked they have to have it, but never mind. It makes both of us smile.
