Why is American chocolate suddenly everywhere?

IamfromBarcelona · 15/01/2022 18:52

Was in Tesco Express today, popped for a chocolatey snack and saw loads of Reece’s and Oreo chocolate eggs- not a creme egg in sight (hastily passing over the fact that I am perusing chocolate eggs in January!)
And then further down the shelf- more Reece’s stuff, and Hersheys!

They weren't being sold here a could of years ago- what’s changed? Is it Brexit? Has there been an Anglo-Anerican merger somewhere?

(I think they’re revolting but that’s just my opinion).

American fast food places too. Taco Bell, Chipotle, Wendys and Popeyes all easily reachable from where I live now. Also American brands like Bath and Body Works now much more easily available in the U.K. in central London there’s multiple large American sweet shops now - Oxford Street, Regent Street. I love it. Love American goods Smile

CinnamonCrumble · 15/01/2022 18:55

It's been widely available in U.K supermarkeys for quite a few years now. It hasn't just appeared overnight.

CinnamonCrumble · 15/01/2022 18:55

Supermarkets sorry.

Me too Smile. A branch at Stratford - two minutes walk from the station and Westfield and one in Reading apparently. More to follow…

Ooh, I used to LOVE Jolly Ranchers... Probably why I ended up breaking a tooth as a teenager, I used to crunch them. I've never been keen on the chocolate, I prefer the European choc.

RedCandyApple · 15/01/2022 19:04

I like it! I use to buy them online from American candy stores and it cost a bloody fortune!! Now much cheaper to get them in the local Tesco’s

IamfromBarcelona · 15/01/2022 19:05

Okay well maybe it’s just taken a while to reach my local Tesco - I do live out in the sticks.

But whenever the change happened, why is that?

Reece's is crazy addictive - peanut butter and chocolate is the BEST combo, and no British firms seem to have bothered replicating (I don't seem to see peanut butter Kitkats anywhere, although the peanut butter Snickers are pretty amazeballs 😍).

But I've no idea why Hershey's has taken off, think it's horrible.

I do get hugely excited when I see A&W root beer in the shops though - at a reasonable price (ie NOT £2.50 a can). Thankfully the cost stops me buying it - I'm trying to cut down on my sugar intake ☺️

AntennaReborn · 15/01/2022 19:08

They have been around for a while, but there definitely seems to be a bit more hype about them in recent months

No idea why, IMO American chocolate tastes like feet, but clearly other people must like them or they wouldn't be getting shelf space

AledsiPad · 15/01/2022 19:09

Brexit? Cheaper to import now?

Kitkat released Peanut butter chunky Kitkats some years ago.

It IS everywhere! I'm not in the UK either, in Europe.
Reeses are nice, hersheys kisses are adorablely cute but 🤢 American chocolate in general tastes really cheap. I think they may have less cocoa content though?

User48751490 · 15/01/2022 19:24

The chocolate is rank🤢

Crowdfundingforcake · 15/01/2022 19:25

Hershey's tastes of puke - think it's butyric acid but it's rancid.Envy

Sparklingbrook · 15/01/2022 19:25

I love Reese's bit Hershey's is disgusting and smells like sick to me. We have a sweet shop locally that sells all this American stuff, the cans of pop all look radioactive and are about £4.
And Twinkies are so sweet they hurt your teeth. Bleurgh.

Roominmyhouse · 15/01/2022 19:28

I cannot wait to try a Reeses egg, yum!

stuntbubbles · 15/01/2022 19:44

Reese’s has been in UK shops for well over a decade, and Tesco has always had a selection of US chocolate – it was my go-to for mint M&M’s at least 10 years ago.

I assume it’s stocked because people buy it – I think Hershey’s is disgusting but the wider US variety of M&Ms is a gift to the world.

My complaint about chocolate availability is how few places have Riesen, the god of chocolate.

halulat · 15/01/2022 19:50

Where is Bath and Body works available in the UK? Love their stuff.

Nomoreusernames1244 · 15/01/2022 19:52

Cadbury are now owned by the american corp Modelez.

They’ve already turned cadbury chocolate to shit, so probably it’s now cheaper to start marketing crappy american chocolate to us as well, then they can take over the market share and ditch expensive cadbury.

I’m mainly eating stuff like ritter sport and ferrero these days. M&s is good too. Keeping away from the big US based brands.

Fallible · 15/01/2022 19:53

I absolutely love Reese's, especially the peanut butter cups.

All the other American chocolate I've tasted was awful though. I agree it does seem to be everywhere all of a sudden.

DesertIslandPenguin · 15/01/2022 19:56

If I remember rightly, Mr Hershey was a HEAVY smoker and developed chocolate that tasted nice to his few remaining tastebuds.

I live abroad so don't get Cadbury but found a shop selling a few random Cadbury chocolates so was excited to get some and then so disappointed! Utterly shit.
RedCandyApple · 15/01/2022 20:05

Everyone’s different, my son likes Hershey’s especially the “mr good bar” people obviously buy it otherwise they wouldn’t sell it
