Why is American chocolate suddenly everywhere?

Was in Tesco Express today, popped for a chocolatey snack and saw loads of Reece’s and Oreo chocolate eggs- not a creme egg in sight (hastily passing over the fact that I am perusing chocolate eggs in January!)
And then further down the shelf- more Reece’s stuff, and Hersheys!

They weren't being sold here a could of years ago- what’s changed? Is it Brexit? Has there been an Anglo-Anerican merger somewhere?

(I think they’re revolting but that’s just my opinion).

It's been around for years on a steady rise. Teenagers love it.

Somewhat related: DH and I have both noticed recently that anything we order from the US arrives very quickly and is never slapped with additional customs charges. Whereas if we order anything from an EU country they’re almost always hit with a customs charge now. So maybe there’s been some kind of deal done for goods from the US?

I’ve never liked Hershey’s, doesn’t taste like actual chocolate to me. I do quite like Ghirardelli stuff though.

@knitnerd90
I'm British in the USA and do not like Hershey's. My kids love Reese's, though. There's got to be something to growing up on it because my kids are fine with that slightly rancid flavour.

There was a programme on telly about this very thing. It depends what chocolate you were brought up on. So they took 5 groups of people, each group was from UK, US, French and I can't remember the other two. They gave them different types of chocolate to taste. One type was from their own country, the other 4 were from the other countries. And practically all of them chose the chocolate from their own country. (Always a few outlier.)
Apparently your tastebuds are very influenced by what you ate as a child.

Years ago in NY I bought a dark chocolate Milky Way, it was like a hybrid of Milky Way and Mars, it was bloody lovely.

That's true @madisonbridges
The French and German people I know don't rate British chocolate very highly

ClafoutisSurprise · 17/01/2022 11:02

I don’t especially think of France and Germany when I think of chocolate, but they always get held up as examples in these sorts of threads. Same with Italy. Belgium and Switzerland, yes. Cheap chocolate from Germany and Italy (don’t really know French chocolate) ranges from good to pretty bad, just as with cheap British chocolate.

Hershey's is the Yuckiest chocolate! It shouldn't be allowed to call itself that! I don't mind the Reece's peanut butter cups though 😊 lucky we still have good cadburys here in OZ
