Things you find a bit odd about Mumsnet

Let me start by saying this is 100% lighthearted and fueled by being a bit bored in my last hour before weekend officially begins.

Anyway, I ventured onto the Royals board recently and found it a bit weird that people refer to Kate Middleton as Catherine. Now, I know that's her full first name (well I assume it is) but I've never heard anyone IRL refer to her as anything but Kate. Maybe I'm behind the times as my Royals knowledge isn't very up to date (as you'll notice by calling Kate Middleton.)

I'm sure I'll regret starting this but anyone else have anything?

The misuse of strikeout Grin

I still can’t get over the how quickly posters are told to leave the bastard/ that’s a deal breaker/ why are you with him.

I’m not referring to threads were the husband is an abusive bastard, those women definitely should leave,

But it’s the posts were DH does something mildly irritating and the OP is expected to just chuck away 15 yrs of previous marital contentment.

Sometimes I’m a dick. Sometimes my DH is a dick. We’re are still married and still love each other very much. Marriage should not be so easily thrown away.

furbabymama87 · 15/01/2022 15:36

The vagina/ vulva thing. Everyone knows what's it's called. But the fact is, if you were to go round referring to it as your vulva that would make you look like a fucking weirdo. Also the sex/ gender thing. In real life no one's arsed what you call it.

The cult of hot chocolate. Nowhere else on the internet is this banal beverage discussed so thoroughly, with breathless wonder, schedules, tips, gadgets, hot chocolate stations (?), gift ideas – “I made them a mug filled with sachets, marshmallows, a hot chocolate stirrer [ed’s note: WTF is that?], wrapped in cellophane” HOW IS THIS AN ACCEPTABLE GIFT, the ins and outs of cleaning the Velvetiser, debate, on and on
The new cupcake?

In the past couple of years I saw so many female adults on MN who said they were recently diagnosed with ADD. More recently I've seen so many diagnosed with ADHD
In real life I know absolutely nobody who has been diagnosed as an adult, it's been hard to even see a GP with illness in the past couple of years where I live.

OhWhyNot · 15/01/2022 16:00

When someone starts a thread asking what should I do in this situation? The inability for a large number of posters to not discuss themselves and tell the op what they would do/say and did so in xyz situation which is nothing like the op’s

I always imagine they would be the ones at a any gathering constantly talking about themselves failing to recognise how bored others are

ShinyHappyPoster · 15/01/2022 16:11

I find it odd that the Trending Now threads never actually seem to be trending and that they often have titles that fit exactly into the little Trending Now box.

BlueThursday · 15/01/2022 16:35

The dogged determination of some to try catch out a lie, no matter how inconsequential it is to the topic

Eg “should I keep DD off school today as she has really bad period pain”

Then one smart arse will claim you’re lying because “kids don’t go to school on the 20th august”

Well, yes they do in certain places

JanisMoplin · 15/01/2022 16:39

Some very strange posts on the lines of " Will I be offending my BAME friend if I say/do something completely innocuous?" The assumption being that BAMEs are fragile, delicate beings who take offence at the smallest mistake. It's very Carrie Bradshaw/Miranda in the new season of SATC.

LondonQueen · 15/01/2022 16:48

@LadyWithLapdog

I find it odd that there are so many right-wing feminists.
Well all the left are in favour of scrapping female zones, so they won't be getting my support.
ConsuelaHammock · 15/01/2022 16:54

Mumsnet prefers those who have inherited money to those who have earned it themselves.

newyear1 · 15/01/2022 16:56

Rather controversial but the level of anger over Brexit. Far beyond that of even my most ardent Remain friends at this stage.

On a minor level, the use of DH etc, washing towels after one use and the sheer level of outrage over fairly inconsequential issues.

LadyWithLapdog · 15/01/2022 16:56

@LondonQueen that's rubbish talk

bippityboppity87 · 15/01/2022 18:24

@LittleBearPad

And an edit button would be terrible.

Lots of posts being altered retrospectively when the AIBU didn’t work out for OP and they backtrack. Threads wouldn’t make sense.

In regards to editing, the way I would do it, would be you have to keep the original post up, but underneath have something like

EDIT: Spelling. Or I meant to put the comma here, for example just to clarify your post a bit more. I think they do that on Reddit?

Instead of scrolling through pointless posts where someone has updated the spelling mistake. Can be a bit annoying, on both ends. I mean, it's not really irritating, but would make it a bit easier to read through, as sometimes I have to scroll back up and be like, eh? 😅

LittleBearPad · 15/01/2022 18:31

Ah ok @bippityboppity87 I see how that would prevent total changes of post

valerianroot · 15/01/2022 20:02

Another thing - the hatred of ILs. Maybe I'm just lucky and really like one set of mine and the others are just a bit meh!

Ditto this. I sometimes go on the Trending Now and it's a thread with 5 replies. Hardly going viral Wink

Yes to wedding stuff also. I bloody love a wedding.

Apparently baby showers are grabby. You provide food, fun games (that you don’t get anywhere else) and you can buy a small gift )if you want!) just like any other party!

loveisanopensore · 15/01/2022 20:51

Any kind of activity with your baby or toddler seems to be looked down on.

I really enjoyed waterbabies with both of mine. And playgroups were fine, at the least an opportunity to talk to other parents while the children pottered about in a safe space.

TrainspottingWelsh · 15/01/2022 21:03

I understand why mn gives the impression we all hate our in-laws. Nobody is going to start threads to say they like their mil because it's not very interesting or worthy of discussion. Dp is fully aware that if we separate I get full custody of pils and sil and he gets access alternative Saturdays, and it's shared 50/50 on the rest of his family, but it's not something I need to discuss or rant about online.

ShinyHappyPoster · 15/01/2022 21:29

That certain posters appear on every Royal thread that mentions Harry and Meghan.
It's like Bloody Mary except its whisper Harry and Meghan only once and within 3 posts, poster x, poster y and poster z will appear. It's so odd. There is no other subject that it happens on. It's almost as though they have an alert set up Grin

Same as the Coronavirus threads. It's like a klaxon goes off. Grin

I've unbolded the MN problem in your sentence.

Other parents - you surely don't need these people in your life!Grin

It always amuses me when there is a convo about a celebrity or celebrity couple and someone says "who?"
I always want to ask if Google has closed for the evening.
