What lovely holidays do you have planned over the coming year?

I am really looking forward to going home (I live abroad) for a few weeks in the summertime. We did this last year and it was brilliant. My mum has cancer, and it's really important that we get home if at all possible.

I'd like to get a beach weekend local to us here as well, if possible, to escape the baking heat but we will have to see!

Keeping fingers crossed the pandemic won't come back with another variant and gather speed over summer/ autumn this year, and that people can travel and holiday and spend time with loved ones - where are you planning to go?

Have you booked anything?

Maldives in June, for past two years it was mean't to have been Mexico but kept having to move them forward each year due to covid cancellations. Third move we decided to just change location to see if we would have better luck in being able to go. Son will have finished his first year in uni, hence the month. Nothing else much booked other than a week in a Manchester Premier inn when son returns to uni.

Joined the thread to tell you about the lovely cottage we’ve booked in Scotland for Easter.

Now I have serious holiday envy!

Lanzarote was the last holiday we had abroad @Serena1977. Absolutely loved it. Not what I expected at all. It’s top of my list when this shit show is over!

This thread is like peeking into another world. How do so many posters afford to have so many holidays each year, especially abroad?

FrenchyQ · 11/01/2022 22:28

Nothing booked yet but hopefully we're going to rent a campervan and travel down through Somerset and Dorset.

Campervan69 · 11/01/2022 22:39
  1. We are old and have paid off our mortgage.
  2. We spend all our money on holidays.
  3. We holiday the cheapest way possible.

In our case we prioritise holidays over everything else. I buy all our clothes at car boot sales for example.

My thinking too. I've scraped enough money to go to Scotland for a week and then the rest will be camping and bike rides locally. I am saving for a deposit on a house though. I am also deeply uncomfortable about flying due to climate change so even if I had money to holiday abroad I don't think I would go unless I was going to spend an extended period of time there, or I was going to visit relatives.
chessycurls · 11/01/2022 22:53

How come people have booked so many things so far in advance? especially with a pandemic thats fucked up so many things. I've got 2 holidays outstanding that have been moved about 4 times since 2020, that put me off booking anything abroad in the last 2 yrs.

Enzbear · 11/01/2022 22:57

Holidays a priority here too.
No mortgage.
Can book anytime as we're both self employed so look for cheaper times of year/deals, no longer need school holidays.
Have rental income, savings and decent salaries.
Only two of us to pay for.
I've always worked though and even when dc were young we always saved enough for holidays abroad.

gaslady14 · 11/01/2022 23:04

The Seychelles this month
Krakow in Feb (flights £15 return with Wizzair!)
Mykonos in April (rescheduled from 2020)
Prague in May (rescheduled from 2021)
Norway in July for Oslo, Bergen + fjords
Santorini in Sept

If we get there that is! The pre flight PCRs required for our next holiday have caused a lot of stress and I'm not sure we'd do it again

I hope you find a trip that suits you and enjoy it Thanks

Wowsers, some big carbon footprints ok this thread!

funji · 11/01/2022 23:12

on

jackstini · 11/01/2022 23:16

Derbyshire weekend March
3 weeks in USA (NY, Washington, Florida) August
Girls weekend in big house with pool September
Egypt beach October

Whatever else we can fit in!

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 11/01/2022 23:22

Nothing too exciting because I'm too scared to get my hopes up.

Long weekend in Newcastle for the Feb half term
A week in Northern Ireland taking Titanic obsessed dc1 to the Titanic museum and then visiting family in the Easter holidays
2 weeks split between the Isle of Wight/Portsmouth area in the summer

Looking at Finland in December and maybe the Netherlands (Efteling and Amsterdam) in October as we were meant to be going in 2020.

The past two years has made me realise how much I miss going on holiday and we're going to prioritise it for a bit. We're fortunate in that we can.

astorsback · 11/01/2022 23:29

Dear God. The poor climate. All these flights!

Beecham · 11/01/2022 23:38

Agree about carbon footprints - people just don't care do they

I think the majority of posters having multiple long-haul holidays a year won’t be taking three teenagers along, aren’t saving for a house, nor are they tied to school holidays…

I can afford to go abroad multiple times a year but I’m single and have no children. 80-90% of my holidays are to places where I have free accommodation and, to an extent, food. I live near a major European hub and I have dozens of flights to choose from each day, so I get the £20 return ones. That’s cheaper than London-Manchester on the train. Tricky to do that if you’re only in driving distance of East Midlands Airport and tied to their schedules.

People prioritise different things, some prioritise holidays and don’t eat out or order in more than twice a year. Others prioritise other things.

EileenGC · 11/01/2022 23:42

I don’t know about other people but I do care. The fact is, I’m already taking 40-50 flights a year for work. Adding another 5 or 10 so I can see my family won’t change much.

I do what I can - I have no children, haven’t eaten meat or fish in my entire life, don’t drive, don’t buy clothes unless they actually need replacing. I do what I can but what I’m unable to even contemplate is resigning from my job. I too have bills to pay.

coogee · 11/01/2022 23:47

Are you pilot?

coogee · 11/01/2022 23:47

a pilot

mjf981 · 11/01/2022 23:57

I know I will get flamed for this, but some of your carbon footprints are going to be off the scale this year Hmm
Please consider taking trains on your holidays if you can.

funji · 12/01/2022 00:05

Don't worry it will be offset by eating vegetables & doing lots of recycling 🤔

hivemindneeded · 12/01/2022 00:15

Nothing booked. Might go for Croatia or Slovenia at Easter and/or a villa in Italy or Greece in September. I fancy a few city breaks too - Barcelona or Lisbon or Amsterdam.
