Money appeared in my bank account

Just under £3k has mysteriously appeared in our joint bank account. Dh knows nothing about it. Neither do I.

I will talk to the bank on Monday, but in the meantime, I'm speculating. Could this be something dodgy or a genuine mistake?

It's an Internet transfer from a bank in Swansea. Confused

OP posts:

I had a cheque sent to me once for £10,000 the name on the cheque and the envelope was exactly the same as mine but the house address was wrong although the postman had delivered it. I did not recognise the business that had sent it and had nothing to do with them at all. I searched for the house and took it to them. I explained when the man opened the door and he took if from me and just said "ok thanks". Blimey I expected a bit of shock and a bit more than just thanks!

@mdh2020

It’s part of a scam. Someone will contact you and ask you to give it back but that is the second part of the scam. Talk to your bank and don’t transfer the money to anyone.
I think this has been explained a few tmes above, the OP is well aware of the possibility of a scam but it's by no means certain it is one

There would have to a lot more to it for the scammer to have both the OP's full bank details and phone number as no one has even tried to ring her if there are any scammers they are pretty rubbish ones.

Havilland · 09/01/2022 18:45

The common scam is for the scammers to take out a loan in the victims name. The money gets paid into the victims account and the victim queries it

The scammer then masquerades as the bank and gets the victim go transfer the money to another account that the scammer has access to.

The victim is then held liable for the fraudulent loan.

Wow, that's a lot. I don't know what has happened. But I had extra, £700 come into my account a while ago.
They said it was from hmrc, which was a surprise, I spent it, as it was needed, then a a month later, they said it had been a error and i had to pay it back.
So definitely don't spend it.

thickthighs73 · 09/01/2022 18:48

speak to the bank, isn’t that the obvious answer

I don't know if you have it on your device but the see OPs post button will tell you that she did that already
girlmom21 · 09/01/2022 18:50

@PurpleCarpets I think they give you the details to send the money back, pretending to be the bank, but in the meantime also get all of your details so they can drain your account

thickthighs73 · 09/01/2022 18:53

@AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair I only read the first post to be honest. What on earth did people do before MN? Did they just use their common sense ?

I ask myself that many times on here Grin

We need an update - and maybe a diagram!!

Youngatheart00 · 09/01/2022 19:04

Bank error or scam.

However, if there’s any type of fraud to be investigated there’s a chance your account could be frozen, so I’d recommend transferring a portion of (your own!) money to another account you hold (hopefully you’ve more than one?) or withdrawing a bit of cash.

Liekje · 09/01/2022 19:13

I’m in Ireland, and I’ve had (lots smaller) amounts appear without reason in my bank. A few days to a week later it was taken out again. Not sure what happened, I never really contacted my bank about it (don’t judge me, I was desperate at the time). It was a few hundred each time and only happened 3 or 4 times. But if it an honest mistake it will be corrected just don’t touch it for a while.. also don’t trust anyone who contacts you about it!

Gechik · 09/01/2022 19:13

As it is the weekend they may have minimal staff so will probably sort it out tomorrow with a bit of luck

ivykaty44 · 09/01/2022 19:28

Didn't santander make a major glitch on Christmas day and transfer to third party bank accounts lots of millions? Maybe this is something to do with this

yes

mrbreezeet1 · 09/01/2022 19:31

The he)) with the bank.
Withdraw it Monday.
If they say anything,
Tell them you don't balance your checkbook, and you
Had not looked in your account in a while and never noticed.
Just tell them it was an honest mistake on your part.

I think it is common sense to read the whole thread or at least the OPs comments before posting.

Doesn't sound like a great scam! What do they do if you don't fall for it and keep their £3k?

girlmom21 · 09/01/2022 19:45

@PurpleCarpets I guess they rely on most people wanting to do the right thing

I really really don't think that (successful) scammers gamble £3k like this! But as I said above I'd be delighted to be the victim of this scam Grin

Tomasinabombadil · 09/01/2022 19:56

I’m only commenting because I want to know the outcome.🙂

mrst3 · 09/01/2022 20:01

Gotta follow this to see outcome 😊👍

SpindleyCrow · 09/01/2022 20:12

I'm intrigued too, as to how it all pans out.

MulticatHouse · 09/01/2022 20:12

I think 'speak to the bank' has become the new 'cancel the cheque'

Mandyjack · 09/01/2022 20:22

Banks sometimes make mistakes, better to check with them

SofiaSoFar · 09/01/2022 20:24

If it is a scam, it won't be the scammer's £3k so nothing to lose.

They would have sent it from whoever's account they've hijacked. Then contact OP and get her to send the money to a different account - one the scammer can withdraw from - to correct their 'mistake'.

Of course, it only makes sense if they actually contact OP and get her to transfer the money!
