Commiserations to Ms Harman and their children. He was only 73.

I hope it's not disrespectful to say this means a by-election in a solid Labour seat.

That is sad.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 07/01/2022 17:12

Yes. They would have celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary this year, as my husband and I will do (all being well). That's a very long time indeed to spend together and then lose your spouse with no chance to say goodbye. I don't know what happened but the BBC report says he died very suddenly in his constituency, so maybe a heart attack. That will take a lot of coming to terms with.

Sad as it would be for anyone but does it need a thread?

PlinkPlankPlunk · 07/01/2022 17:16

Oh that’s sad. I do admire Harriet. She’s been a good MP and acted with integrity, while also being a woman in a man’s world - which is never easy.

Wishing Harriet and her family commiserations and all the best

Choccyp1g · 07/01/2022 17:16

What a shame, Ms Harman recently announced she was planning to stand down at the next election, they should have been looking forward to a happy retirement together.

Guardian link for those interested

Very sad. I used to know his daughter and so the news really saddened me.

CorrBlimeyGG · 07/01/2022 17:30

He was a trade union activist who always supported workers rights. A loss to the trade union movement but also to his constituents.

You could always ignore it, rather than posting.

Terribly sad and, speaking personally, sudden unexpected deaths like this come as such a horrible shock. I really really feel for Harriet and their children. So terrible for them Flowers

TokyoSushi · 07/01/2022 17:45

Oh goodness, I didn't realise he was Harriet Harman's husband, how sad. Sad

FlibbertyGiblets · 07/01/2022 17:51

Sad news, how awful for his family.

Why not? Why do you deem this thread unworthy?

Agreed. He was speaking in Parliament only 24 hours ago. Sudden death with no time to say goodbye is terribly distressing.
Topseyt · 07/01/2022 18:30

Oh no! Very sad. My thoughts are with Harriet and their family. What an awful shock.

Of course it is deserving of a thread! Why on earth not?

DerAlteMann · 07/01/2022 19:44

Have to say I had never heard of the man.

Zwellers · 07/01/2022 20:19

And. What's the point of this ?. We can go on the news to find this out. People posting here how sorry they is pointless.

forcedfun · 07/01/2022 22:48

Oh that's really sad. He was a genuinely amazing person in his own right.

I don't know but I've seen a lot of worst thread tonight.
forcedfun · 07/01/2022 22:54

@itwasntaparty I assume you aren't aware of what a huge contribution he made to the union movement/workers rights.
