Commiserations to Ms Harman and their children. He was only 73.

Dear god. The deaths of actors , sports men and women , comedians celebrities et al get threads why on earth shouldn't the death of a politician Hmm

sunflowerstory · 07/01/2022 23:53

@itwasntaparty

Sad as it would be for anyone but does it need a thread?
Yes, it doesn't quite compete with the groundbreaking thread of "I just ate a rustlers burger" that you blessed us with earlier today...
LoudSnoringDog · 08/01/2022 07:54

Very sad. He is the MP for the constituency where I work. It's very evident that he is a good local MP. It's an area with high deprivation and he is prominent in challenging local issues for his constituents.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 08/01/2022 08:19

MPs get a lot of stick, but it's at times like this, as we saw when David Amess was murdered last year, that we hear how much good they often do in their constituencies and about the unsung hard graft many put in on unglamorous but important issues behind the scenes. I'm glad to hear Jack Dromey was one of the good ones.

He was a really nice man. When I lived in the constituency he helped me with some issues and really took the time, whereas my current MP just sends out stock letters.

He did a lot for the area, as pp said, one of the poorest areas in the country.

KangSaeByeok · 08/01/2022 08:37

The last professional thing he did was ask a parliamentary question around the timing relating to Tory peer Michelle Mone's referring a PPE company to the 'VIP' contract lane. Turns out she referred the company BEFORE they'd even be registered. 🤨

RIP Jack. Fighting Tory sleaze to the very end.

llansanan · 08/01/2022 09:19

May he rest in peace and thoughts for his family and friends who mourn. Died far too young.

Kendrickspenguin · 08/01/2022 10:12

@DerAlteMann

Have to say I had never heard of the man.
Why do you have to say? Surely you either scroll past the thread or you type his name in to Google to find out a little more about him.
Westfacing · 08/01/2022 10:17

Of course it deserves a thread - a sitting MP suddenly dies, never mind that he was an active trade unionist and married to Harriet Harman.

I'm old enough to remember Grunwick.

Slothtoes · 08/01/2022 10:18

He sounded like a proper good egg. I remember him as a great participant on Any Questions. I like Harriet Harman and feel very sorry for her. Condolences to his family and friends.

OldWivesTale · 08/01/2022 10:27

A good man who genuinely cared. So sad.

BestIsWest · 08/01/2022 10:30

So sad. My DF worked closely with him during his time with TGWU and thought very highly of him.

Hobnobswantshernameback · 08/01/2022 10:31

Harriet Harman had announced she was standing down at the next election
Presumably to spend time with family Sad
And for the naysayers on this thread
I'm sure there's a thread about vacuous instagrammers you can pop over to
Or maybe head to tattle probably more your speed

SpookyScarySkeletons · 08/01/2022 10:36

@sunflowerstory virtual high five coming your way!!

I didn't know he was married to HH either. I feel very sad for her and their children. It must be such a shock.

Didiusfalco · 08/01/2022 10:37

I used to live in his constituency. He was a really good MP, very involved with the local community and I think really cared about improving a quite deprived area.

ajandjjmum · 08/01/2022 11:03

I was at the Count on the night he was first elected - a friend was also standing.

Sympathy to all those who loved him.

abra1d1 · 08/01/2022 11:06

Must have been an awful for shock for this family, so sad.

icelolly12 · 08/01/2022 11:13

A human life is more worthy of a thread than the vast majority of banal topics surely
AlexaShutUp · 08/01/2022 11:16

Very sad for Harriet Harman and the rest of his family. He was obviously a good man. So sad that they didn't have a chance to say goodbye.

I don't understand the weird comments about there being no need for a thread. People talk on MN about all manner of things. A politician's death is as noteworthy as many other topics discussed on these boards.

I despise our current prime minister and several members of his top team, but we shouldn't lose sight of the fact that our politicians - even the dreadful ones - are human beings with families who love them. And many of our MPs do work exceptionally hard for their communities - I would not have voted for my previous Tory MP in a million years because I hated her politics, but I will acknowledge that she was actually a very good constituency MP. And the Labour MP with whom I liaise for work is outstanding and works ridiculously hard for the local community. Most of them have decent motivations, despite the lack of morals among those currently at the top. Why shouldn't their deaths be remarked upon?
