... I am eating a cheese toastie that I made in the frying pan and I can't believe it took me so long to do this. I learnt this on MN and I can't remember who the poster was but thank you. Thankyou
yum

Yum, I much prefer them done in a frying pan. Quite like the grill type plates on my toastie maker as well but don't like the normal triangle toasties with the sealed edges at all.

FiveGs · 07/01/2022 12:22

Oh yes, cover the pan in a lot of butter, wait a little longer than normal then flip (having added more butter to the pan) et voila! A grilled cheese (as my American DH calls them).

Perfect with a bowl of tomato soup to dunk in.

ginslinger · 07/01/2022 12:26

it's a game changer - for a few moments I thought it wasn't going to work and I would end up soggy warm bread but I kept the faith

The classic American way is actually to butter the bread slices first, rather than melting butter in the pan!

Personally, I favour using mayonnaise instead of butter. It's chef's kiss

Balula · 07/01/2022 12:30

If you think that's magical, try putting one in the air fryer 👌🏻👌🏻

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 07/01/2022 12:36

DH does them. They're really nice

I buttered the bread - I shall try the mayo option

we're still in the 20th century here with no air fryer

‘ but don't like the normal triangle toasties with the sealed edges at all.’

Me neither, teeth shattering entry followed by being scalded by the temperature of the cheese.

I absolutely love pan fried toasties, I often use mayo instead of butter on the outside now too, yum!

TangfasticsAreFantastic · 07/01/2022 15:37

How funny - I did this at the weekend for the first time too.

I was also convinced it was going to be a soggy mess, but oh my days it was yummy! So much better than a sandwich maker or panini pressed one!

Wagsandclaws · 07/01/2022 15:44

How do you do this!!!???

I'm invested now 🤣

belimoo · 07/01/2022 15:45

This sounds delicious! Can you give me some guidance on the cheese please? Sliced or grated? Doesn't it all fall out the sides of bread?

EmmaH2022 · 07/01/2022 15:49

I think I had this once in a cafe and it was horrible and greasy.

Also, the edges weren't sealed so the contents weren't really toasted.

Team triangle! 🍞🔼

I make a regular cheese (sometimes add ham) sandwich. Sliced cheese so it stays in better. Then butter the outsides and put it in a frying pan. Not too hot, you need the cheese to melt before the bread burns. I use a spatula to sort of squish it down slightly as the cheese melts so it all sticks together better, then flip it over carefully and toast the other side.
RockaLock · 07/01/2022 15:57

Also you can make a cheese (& ham) sandwich, dip it in a beaten egg to coat it, and then fry it.

Delicious!

AColdDuncanGoodhew · 07/01/2022 15:59

The ONLY way to do it!

Agadorsparticus · 07/01/2022 15:59

We're using the George Foreman for toasties. Absolutely delicious.

Schoolsout78 · 07/01/2022 16:06

Omg I learnt about that on MN too! Genius!!

amusedbush · 07/01/2022 16:21

It’s so much better than the type made in a toastie machine. Although I’ll admit that I view them as totally different and use the American name of grilled cheese sandwich for the type made in a frying pan Blush

Oh god, I was trying to stay off cheese for a bit. So I might fit into some of my clothes.

But I was given an air fryer for Christmas and I can already imagine …

😋😋😋

longtompot · 07/01/2022 17:22

I usually do ours in the frying pan, buttering the bread and not melting the butter in the pan. We also have a George Foreman grills (other brands are available) so no need for the butter but it does lose some flavour. I miss the sealed edges ones as I used to love doing an egg in my toasted sarnie. We had a deep fill 1980s Breville one and I loved it. The cleaning, not so much.

minipie · 07/01/2022 17:50

Top tip: put a small heavy pan (ideally cast iron if you have it) on top of the sandwich as it cooks. It flattens it a bit and keeps it all together. Does mean two pans to wash up though…

AmIgoinghomeforXmas · 07/01/2022 20:10

I learned about double baked potatoes on here, dc love those.

ThePrionOne · 07/01/2022 20:19

Mayo on the outside, you say?

My Saturday breakfast plans have now been changed…

TickleMyPickle · 07/01/2022 20:26

Cut a naan bread in half, spread mango chutney over both sides, add grated cheese, chopped spring onion and red chilli, make it into a sandwich and then cook in a frying pan, 3 mins each side whilst pressing down firmly on it. Delicious!
