What's the nicest thing you've eaten lately?

I haven't been able to taste or smell anything for the best part of a month due to Covid and my taste has returned. I know that's no time at all in comparison to some poor people but it was a pain and especially disappointing at Christmas.

I've just had some Whitaker's Ginger creams and OMG, they're amazing. Cheap too. Perhaps it's because I've just got my taste back or because I love anything with ginger but they're so good. No this isn't an advert for them.

What other delights should I try now that my tastebuds are working again?

I want lasagne now as well as a toastie

MissConductUS · 07/01/2022 16:12

I had two takeaway lobster rolls with onion rings last night. Delicious.

AnotherMansCause · 07/01/2022 16:25

I had a really delicious mango the other day. I didn't lose my sense of taste or smell with covid exactly, but I've gone off so many foods since having it. So many processed foods taste awful, chemically & loads of them give me heartburn or make me feel really sick now. But fruit & veg are still fine, thankfully. DH bought me another mango to have this evening, & some other delicious fruit.

Last nights’ dinner, pasta bake with slow cooked cubed beef in tomato, herbs & red wine sauce, with cheese top.

@theNumbersStation

I used two packs of chipolata sausages ( 12 in each pack )

Two onions sliced

400ml mulled wine

2 cloves garlic

4 slices smoked streaky bacon

Thyme

Brown the sausages in a large oven proof casserole and set aside to add back to the pot later.

Slowly cook the onions and bacon

Add two teaspoons of plain flour and stir

Add the mulled wine , crushed or chopped garlic and some thyme and some salt and pepper to season.

Add sausages back in and bring to a simmer.

You can then gently cook for 20 mins or do what I did which was put it in the oven at 120 degrees ( slow cooking temperature ) for a couple of hours before serving. This made everything really caramelly and the sausages really soft and tender.

Four of us are all but four sausages which DH finished off today.

Should be served with mash bit DH hates it so we had roast potatoes and broccoli instead.

Thank you so much @AngelsWithSilverWings

That is going to happen in this house very soon. 😋

Slow cooker beef in barbecue sauce, Yorkshire puddings, carrots and peas. Just had it for dinner and it was a delight.

mamaduckbone · 07/01/2022 18:15

I made my best ever leftovers pie last Sunday - turkey (frozen after Christmas), ham, leeks and mushrooms with a lovely gravy using turkey stock and a puff pastry top. I even froze some Christmas dinner gravy to have with it.

Just to warn you, when I got my taste back after Covid I just wanted to eat EVERYTHING, which then led into Christmas. Ergo, half a stone to lose in JanuaryBlush

BruceBogtrottersWife · 07/01/2022 18:17

Some banana cookies I made yesterday. I don't normally have a sweet tooth at all but they were divine!

NanooCov · 07/01/2022 18:18

Truffled mash potato from M&S.

Frogsareflyinginfromthewest · 07/01/2022 18:46

Frumentry.

Epitome of an old Yorkshire Christmas - used this recipe and added Almond milk instead of water. Its a hug in a bowl.

Chicken mini fillets with Cajun spice, a nice oven cooked crispy baked potato with butter and salad sprinkled with coriander and mint with Nando's perinaise sauce on the side for dipping, followed by after 8 french fancies

Fire19 · 07/01/2022 18:51

Tartiflette, it was a holiday treat to myself, even better eating the leftovers for lunch.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 07/01/2022 18:53

If you love ginger, then try this... Make an Eton Mess, but use chopped stem ginger in syrup instead of the strawberries. Known as Hendersons Mess after the restaurant in Glasgow where my parents originally ate it 😋

100problems · 07/01/2022 19:30

Aha! Glad you asked.

It was today: Coop sourdough, toasted with mashed avocado, chilli flakes and a perfectly poached egg.

Fucking fantastic and I've got enough for the whole weekend!!!!

AlpacaTheBags · 07/01/2022 19:33

Thank you all so much. I can't wait to try and to make as many of these as I can.

I feel like a character in one of those old movies which starts off in black and white and turns technicolour. It's so good to be able to enjoy food again.

Just got in from work to find hubby has made a pot-mess. Fried mince, marrow fat peas and coconut rice stir-fried! Sounds gopping but tasted fantastic!!!

ISpyCobraKai · 07/01/2022 19:39

I love this thread, though I fear it's going to be expensive!
Mine is my favourite pizza.
Total cheat, buy a finest type margarita pizza, add lots of anchovies, black olives and capers.
I've also had a gorgeous really ripe avocado, just with salt and pepper.

A580Hojas · 07/01/2022 19:40

A pie I made after Christmas. Turkey, gammon, mushrooms, shallots and garlic in a creamy roux sauce in a puff pastry pie (puff pastry courtesy of Jus-Rol). It was bloody lovely.

ArblemarzipanTFruitcake · 07/01/2022 19:40

We had a Lidl Three Game Roast on New Year's Day and it was lovely!

seething1234 · 07/01/2022 19:55

Garlic & cheese chips from Eddie Rockets
I also made an amazing Tikka Masala recently that was fabulous

guinnessandblackcurrant · 07/01/2022 20:09

Marmite cheese hot cross buns from M and S, toasted with butter. Amazing

TheCanyon · 07/01/2022 20:11

A box of deans shortbread. I'm not even sorry, it just melts in your mouth so of course you need more....
