Having a very odd night. Stateside.

Have been the other side of the pond since prior to Christmas, visiting family.
On my way back home but in a rambling kind of way. Booked a motel in Florida to stay in for three nights. Was stupidly cheap which should have given me a heads up that it was to be avoided.
So arrived last night and noticed the toilet was not draining as it should. Left it as it was late and could not be asked at that point.
Was awake by half six this morning so phoned the front desk who said they would get the maintenance guy to have a look when he arrived.
An hour or so later, he arrives and brandishes a plunger at me, I step aside and let him get to it.
He plunges and then seems to think the job has been done.
Not so. I walk over to the front desk at around ten am and ask for them to provide me with some chemicals so I can sort the issue. They cannot possibly do that, the receptionist, who hales from Manchester, tells me she will get him to come over again.
Takes another hour or so but he gets here, plunger in hand. I tell him that it's not going to work as the blockage is obviously further down the pipes and could he perhaps throw some bleach down.
He starts acting like I am an oddball. But does go and get a snagger to clear the blockage.
On his way out the door, he tells me that 'I would have to be out of mind to put bleach down the toilet.
I probably should have just laughed at that point but the comment plus the two cockroaches I have seen have got me riled and I email the motel chain, with an outline of what happened and a few web links showing how actually normal it is to put bleach in toilets.
I go out and have a wander and grab some dinner and then when I get back I decide to post a review of the motel. Having done that, I read some of the other reviews and find the one I have screenshotted and attached below.
So anyway having found a couple more cockroaches upon my return (but armed with bug spray) I resign myself to having no sleep tonight and to booking a more salubrious establishment tomorrow.
And then at one am I start hearing rustling noises outside my door, I've seen a few feral cats around here and with the cockroaches, I am guessing it might also be a rat, so not overly concerned. I play an ultrasonic sound file for around ten minutes and then there are no more rustling noises.
A while later I hear what I think are two people coming up the outside stairs, while sounding drunk and laughing. Then I realise it's only one person.
Then this person is hanging around outside my door and starts talking, quietly at first but increasing in volume, sounds drunk, talks 'dont you worry your pretty little head, Mike's going to take care of it', volume decreases again, very glad I have been awake all night at this point, as would have been a bad way to wake up.
Fuck he just came back and banged on the air conditioning unit.
He talked about bashing the door in previously but then wandered off muttering about how 'he done fucked up'
Have my laptop and will be programming in 911 (they literally started offering the emergency call service TODAY)

Emergency call services on Skype today that should read. Due to issues with my phone, not sure it would work phoning them from it.
Have booked another hotel for tomorrow night.

Oh my goodness, how awful! Hope you find somewhere better (shouldn't be hard)

merrymelodies · 05/01/2022 09:21

Get out of there ASAP. Yikes!

ArabellaStrange · 05/01/2022 09:22

He hasn't been back again but not actually sure if it was the maintenance guy. Plan is to pack up when it starts getting light (looking for another hotel now) grab an Uber for COVID test for flight back, then come back grab my packed stuff and hightail it out of here. Then phone this place, once gone to tell them left keycard in the room and is their maintenance guy called Mike?
I was really scared earlier but when he was wandering off muttering about having fucked up, for some reason that calmed me down.
Not planning on ever coming back to Florida, never ever.

Wagsandclaws · 05/01/2022 09:31

Wow, yep I'd be out of there first thing.

peridito · 05/01/2022 09:31

Wow ,you're brave and resourceful!!

ultrasonic sound file - I would never have thought of that ,did you search and download or did you just have it ready ?

are you sure you're not testing out the first chapter of a novel you're writing on us ? ( only joking ,I believe you )

ArabellaStrange · 05/01/2022 09:46

Looked it up on YouTube used to have an app, but I can hear the one on YouTube so makes me think that it might be more effective? Possibly?
This trip has been quite stressful in places but am looking forward to the nice hotel (please be nice, most definitely can't be any worse...) And a long sleep this evening.

merrymelodies · 05/01/2022 09:52

Hmm... so it must be almost 5 am for you, OP? I'm on the west coast (Canada) so almost 2 am for me. You didn't get any sleep, then.Sad

ArabellaStrange · 05/01/2022 09:59

Nope none at all not good with bugs especially when they have been on the bed.
Was in North Carolina for most of the trip intervened when the woman next to our Air BNB was being beaten by her boyfriend. He went when I said I'd call the police if he didn't leave
Seriously reconsidering ever coming back to theses shores, I know stuff like this happens in the UK too but can't imagine ever finding a review for a place where the person leaving the review has been threatened by a member of staff...

merrymelodies · 05/01/2022 10:04

I would leave as soon as humanly possible... seriously. Good luck!

Migrainesbythedozen · 05/01/2022 10:09

I wouldn't leave for a test and then return. I would leave full stop. You don't know what they'll do if you leave the room/hotel. Book a hotel online, call taxi and LEAVE immediately, go to have test, etc. Just leave. This sounds like an unsafe hotel and I wouldn't chance it leaving and coming back. Just.....GO and never return. Do not leave the room until you are checking out.

ArabellaStrange · 05/01/2022 10:20

Yes think that's what I will do. Have another hotel booked for tonight. And will deal with lugging my stuff round with me. And will wait until it's light and busier before going out of my room. And will have phone in hand with 911 up and ready on Skype. And will go outside when Uber is pulling in and not before

ArabellaStrange · 05/01/2022 10:49

Going to take all my stuff and go. Also will message the Uber driver and say I need a hand with my luggage so would they please meet me at room door. Fingers crossed they will.

OP posts:
SpringDaisies · 05/01/2022 11:07

Perhaps offer Iber driver $10 tip to wait at reception or 10 metres away from Room XX ( the room NEXT to yours) to help you with your bags? A tip is a great incentive and you’ll move quicker and more safely to the car with 2 of you.

Migrainesbythedozen · 05/01/2022 11:10

They might be reluctant to take the job if you phrase it that way. Say the truth that you feel unsafe, there have been incidents, and can they meet you at your room door.

ArabellaStrange · 05/01/2022 11:32

Hmmmn I was thinking that they might be put off if I said I felt unsafe.
Feeling sleepy so going to put my head down for a couple of hours, can't do COVID test until after 11am, did it too early on the way out and it was a total nightmare. Hopefully will avoid that.
Will update later.

ArabellaStrange · 05/01/2022 16:54

At the test center no problems leaving the motel. The golf cart he uses was parked outside reception.
A bit of a rut though re testing they give results via an app which a UK phone will not register so am having to Uber over to the health department and fill out some forms there before heading back here I guess. Glad I managed three hours sleep, making this easier to deal with than it would be otherwise.

Thanks for the update ArrabellaStrange. I hope everything else goes smoothly and safely for you now.

Not sure if I'm missing the point but yeah, agree that bleach will not resolve a blockage (merely sterilise it) and could cause injury to someone subsequently clearing the pipes.

VeganVampire · 05/01/2022 21:48

Oh you do make me laugh - you sent an email about how to put bleach in a loo? And then a maintenance man with a hammer hangs around outside your room. And then you go to a new hotel and they give you a bottle of $40 fizz?

Your 'fizz' is $8 in walmart ...... and the rest of your story is just as cheap.

TheMagiciansNiece · 05/01/2022 21:55

Glad you've got it all sorted.

Just wanted to say that the expression isn't "can't be asked" but "can't be arsed". My DD thought it was asked and used it in front of people who were not impressed!

peridito · 05/01/2022 22:27

Glad you're safely relocated .
