I found out yesterday that I am a year younger than I thought I was

Somehow- I am not sure when this happened- sometime last year I guess - I jumped a year in my head. I was convinced I had turned ned 55 in September.
Was only when talking about birthdays with a friend who was born in the same year as me did they put me right. I was elated and horrified at the same time.

Time has had little meaning these last couple of years I suppose

Please say I’m not the only one to get their own age wrong ?

I was talking about this only today with my mum. You are not alone!

PurplePikachu · 04/01/2022 16:44

I have to do the maths pretty much every time, I can’t keep track of my age anymore so just work it out if I’m asked. It’s quite funny when you think back to being 9 and a half, 9 and three quarters etc. It mattered so much more to me the .

theremustonlybeone · 04/01/2022 16:44

I did the same - you are not alone- must be a over 50 thing

Bogiesaremyonlyfriend · 04/01/2022 16:45

I did this at 28 was only 27 and was very pleased, sadly when turning 34 I thought I was only turning 33 and that stung a bit....!!

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 04/01/2022 16:45

My mum did this
Told us she was 64 but she was turning 63
She was annoyed as a year further away from her bus pass and pension

YukoandHiro · 04/01/2022 16:45

I only know how old I am rn as I have a significant birthday this year. Mid decade I have lost track before now, yes... it just becomes irrelevant after a while

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 04/01/2022 16:45

I’ve spent a year being older than I actually am too.... not much hope really!

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 04/01/2022 16:47

I thought this was going to be an exciting tale of having been in the wrong school year since age 4 with all the problems that might bring

Being a bit fuzzy on dates during a pandemic or having to think twice once yu're over 50 is a big anti climax Grin

nancy75 · 04/01/2022 16:47

Years ago my friend signed up for something, she told them date of birth & said I’m x years old. The other person said no you’re y years old.
Friend replied ‘ I think I know how old I am!’
Friend was obviously wrong & has never been allowed to live it down

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 04/01/2022 16:47

My mum never knows how old she is. Pretty much every birthday she'll ask me how old she is and this has been going on since I was a teenager Grin.

Theworkhouse · 04/01/2022 16:48

I always forget mine, early sixties is good enough. I always have to work out Dd's from her birth year, and she's only 23. I've always had a problem with numbers sticking though.

TragoCardboardCopper · 04/01/2022 16:48

I did this, actually had quite a heated discussion with an aunt who was, correctly, telling me I was a year younger than I thought.
It was only when I got a calculator out after she was gone that I realised she was right! Blush

SirChenjins · 04/01/2022 16:48

My colleague somehow managed to knock a decade off her age for a while - it was a genuine mistake as she really isn’t someone who would pretend to be younger. She was absolutely mortified when she realised - as she said, “everyone must have thought, fuck, she’s not aged well when I told them how old I was”. Gave us a good laugh Grin

RaisedbySloths · 04/01/2022 16:49

Right after a birthday I start thinking about how old I'll be on my next birthday. My brain then convinces me that's how old I am now. This happens every bloody year. Big 50 this year though so trying to stay 49 in my head as long as I can.

ApocalypseNowt · 04/01/2022 16:50

I have a friend who found out for real that they were about 1.5yrs younger than they thought they were! Shock

TabithaTittlemouse · 04/01/2022 16:50

I did this! I missed out 31. A friend corrected me on my next birthday Grin

BigButtons · 04/01/2022 16:51

Thank god I am not alone. I have never not known my age before. Just to think I have gained a year back just like that.

I wish it was as exciting as being the wrong age since I was 4 though!

I read a news report once of a man who was 5 years older than he thought he was. He received a letter about claiming his pension & called up to set them straight, turns out the pension people were correct. His parents had died young and his elder siblings who bought him up must have got mixed up at some point. Imagine the horror of finding out you are 5 years older Shock

maximist · 04/01/2022 16:57

I was born in a year with a 0 on the end, which makes it easier to work out!

PatriotCanes · 04/01/2022 16:57

My school friend sent me a birthday card congratulating me on my 45th birthday. She's a month older than me. I had to break the news that we were both, in fact, actually 46. Her absolute indignation was the best birthday present ever Grin

FruitMelange · 04/01/2022 16:57

Right after a birthday I start thinking about how old I'll be on my next birthday. My brain then convinces me that's how old I am now

That's exactly what happens to me. It's thrown me a few times.

ChristmasPlugholes · 04/01/2022 16:58

I do this on purpose - birthday in Oct but I tell myself (and others) I am the 'next age' from Jan. Makes it less of a shock when Oct rolls around!

rifling · 04/01/2022 16:58

Dh and I were talking about how to celebrate my 50th this year. Only later did I realise- I'm actually 49 this year. Grin

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 04/01/2022 17:02

I missed out 46 for some reason, spent ages telling folks I was 47, only realised shortly before my actual 47th that I had been wrong.

TotheletterofthelawTHELETTER · 04/01/2022 17:02

I worked with a woman who thought she was turning 50 but she was actually turning 49. She has made a massive fuss about it, going on about her big birthday, organised a party etc. Apparently her Mum arrived at the party venue and went “eh, why have you got 50 banners? You’re only 49”, big discussion followed, work woman thought her Mum had got it wrong but got her birth cert out the next day was in fact 49. When her Mum was asked why she hadn’t said anything earlier she just said as colleague had kept calling it her big birthday the mum had kept thinking “she’s making a big fuss of being 49.” Colleague think she lost track of her age in her mid 30s somehow 😂
