Somehow- I am not sure when this happened- sometime last year I guess - I jumped a year in my head. I was convinced I had turned ned 55 in September.
Was only when talking about birthdays with a friend who was born in the same year as me did they put me right. I was elated and horrified at the same time.

Time has had little meaning these last couple of years I suppose

Please say I’m not the only one to get their own age wrong ?

I have just to work out how old I am...

Frymetothemoon · 05/01/2022 09:22

I have a friend who wasn't born on the day her birth certificate says she was. Her dad got too drunk to go and register her in time... (about 75 years ago - I don't think it could happen these days)

BlueFlavour · 05/01/2022 09:28

I’ve done this Smile
I think I was 46 but thought I was 47. I was chatting about it and dc3 told me I had it wrong. It was quite nice actually I gained a year.
Dh never knows how old he or anybody is.
When dd was 15 in ONE day she convinced him she was 14 and then 16 Grin

Vbree · 05/01/2022 09:29

Yes I still think I'm 35, then actually realise I'm 37!

kittensinthekitchen · 05/01/2022 09:36

My grandad spent years thinking he was a year older than he was. One day he mentioned his year of birth and I worked out for him that he was actually 83, not 84. No idea how long that's been going on for, but he definitely celebrated his 80th a year early 🤣

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 05/01/2022 09:37

I was born in a decade year, so the maths is simple, but at the end of the year. I sir d months thinking I’m a year older than I am.

Greygreenblue · 05/01/2022 09:38

I do this to myself almost every year. A few months before my birthday I start thinking of myself as the older age, and then I forget if I am actually that age yet or not. And then because of that, after my birthday I sometimes think Im younger than I am….

GMIL came was a refugee in the 50s, the person translating her papers got her birth year wrong by 5 years. She didn’t say anything to anyone about this, even her son, until she was in her mid 90s

PyjamasOClock · 05/01/2022 09:39

I was unconscious and ventilated on ITU on my 31st birthday. I was weaned from the ventilator a few days afterwards. I spent most of the following year, accidentally or deliberately, thinking I was still 30!!

OldTinHat · 05/01/2022 09:47

Different scenario but I popped into to see an elderly neighbour yesterday. She said she couldn't understand why she had so many ailments as she's only 68. She's 88.

HoppingPavlova · 05/01/2022 09:49

Did you not remember what year you were born in?

HoppingPavlova · 05/01/2022 09:50

I sometimes can’t remember exactly how old my kids are as I lose track of time, but I can remember the year each was born so just use that to calculate.

Gonnagetgoing · 05/01/2022 10:07

My brother had this when he was late 30s but only because a friend told him he was a year younger (friend is 6 months younger).

Thelnebriati · 05/01/2022 10:15

I had to give my DOB and age to a nurse last year - I only knew my DOB. She told me how old I was. I no longer keep track, its too many candles to fit on a cake. Grin

That sounds like the perfect excuse to buy yourself a bigger cake Grin
Thelnebriati · 05/01/2022 10:55

AnxiousWeirdo · 05/01/2022 11:00

I did this and was telling my dd I was 34 when sil pipes up and shouts "YOURE 33 WTF" 😂 turns out she was right. It was a month before my actual 34th birthday

Floralnomad · 05/01/2022 11:03

I have to work out how old I am every time I need to know as I never remember and it’s pretty much been like that since I was about 30 and I’m 55 ( apparently) .

RiversOfFish · 05/01/2022 11:10

Happened with a friend, she had previously told me her age and mentioned it on more than one occasion, like when you say you are 33 so you down play it or fun and you are "early 30s" and 34 is the "mid 30s" category so I knew she was 34 as she was bemoaning the mid bit.

Then I mentioned the year I was born to another friend and first friend said yes me too, and I said no you said you were 34, I am 33. She then worked it out on her phone and could not believe she had advanced her age a whole year.

I think if age is unimportant you may well forget your age. My children kept winking telling me I was 38 when I was 40, then 41 etc.

Potatodrivers · 05/01/2022 11:17

I was 33 for a year before learning on my 33rd birthday that I was 32 before that. So it felt like I was 33 for 2 years

viques · 05/01/2022 11:20

I am so relieved I was born in a year ending with a zero, it makes calculating my age effortless! My dd was born in a year ending with a 9 and these days I have to use my fingers to work it out!

shinynewapple21 · 05/01/2022 11:22

@SouthOfFrance

I read a news report once of a man who was 5 years older than he thought he was. He received a letter about claiming his pension & called up to set them straight, turns out the pension people were correct. His parents had died young and his elder siblings who bought him up must have got mixed up at some point. Imagine the horror of finding out you are 5 years older Shock

I don't understand that one - 5 years within childhood is a big difference . Eg thinking an 8 year old was 3, or a 10 year old was 5. I can understand it for two years , but 5 is a lot.

Noisyprat · 05/01/2022 11:23

Surely though the reality is that age us just about how you feel! Very soon you will be able to just you are whatever age you fancy, it’s the next logical step in our illogical world! I feel sure you will also be able to apply to have your birth certificate updated with your preferred birthday.

Vapeyvapevape · 05/01/2022 11:29

We truly believe my mums age is wrong, I can't remember the exact details but she was born on Christmas Day and when she was registered , the following year , we think her dad put the wrong year down.

rifling · 05/01/2022 12:12

A friend of ours adopted a child who had been abandoned in an orphanage. Sad They had to give the child a new birthday and estimated that he was 2 1/2. They now think, several years later, that he was probably 4 or 5 at adoption!

autismandgin · 05/01/2022 12:14

I did this when I was 32! I told everyone I was 34 for a good few months Blush
