HELP, Car hasn't been registered for two years?!

WinterWarmer19 · 02/01/2022 13:01

Hi there,
This month i realised i have never received a car tax reminder since getting my new car 2 years ago. the car dealership arranged road tax, car insurance etc before i drove away that day and assured me that all paperwork would be dealt with by them. last year, 2021, i road taxed my car online and thought everything was fine.

i called up dvla last week to ask about not getting a reminder. they said i was not registered to the vehicle and the dealership who sold me the car must have failed to pass on my details.

my car is taxed, ive been taxing it online as stated and have been paying my insurance, even although i dont have a logbook. now im worried that once all my details etc are updated, that a stream of old speeding tickets or fines will come in, as it said online that thats how theyre able to contact you.

i asked dvla about this and they said any fines etc would have probably been sent to the dealership or my insurance and they would have contacted me, but what if they didnt? also - does this affect my insurance cover if im not registered? dvla said it wouldnt affect insurance, but im in a real knot with this, any help would be really appreciated!

What fines though? You had the car.

The op could have inadvertently driven in a bus lane and never knew or stopped in a box junction without noticing...quite often people only find out they have done these things once the letter arrives

How many times do you expect to have been caught speeding in the last 2 years?! DVLA have told you it’s not a problem - trust them!

Stop speeding 🤷🏻‍♀️

WinterWarmer19 · 02/01/2022 13:11

@comedycook exactly! i just feel that if the car dealership was so unorganised to not send my details, then would they contact me if a ticket or fine had been sent to them for me?

im not a reckless driver @PotteringAlong but we all make mistakes every now and then and im worried that theyve been unable to contact me about bus lanes etc.

i dont speed. what im referring to is being slightly over on rare occasions - like 43 on a 40 - and not receiving a letter.

Well I didn't know that because being worried about a stream of speeding tickets doesn't really indicate 'being slightly over on rare occasions'.

They'd contact you to stop being taken to court as the owner of a vehicle regularly speeding and driving in bus lanes Smile

Fines dont just disapear if you ignore the letters.

How have you managed to tax online without a v5? You need the document reference number in order to do so.

Good question, how did you get the long number you need to do it online?
JenniferWooley · 02/01/2022 13:23

You can't tax a vehicle online without the relevant reference number from either the reminder or the V5 logbook so how did you manage to tax the vehicle without these?

JenniferWooley · 02/01/2022 13:23

Also did the dealer give you the green new keeper slip when you bought the car?

maffhew · 02/01/2022 13:25

Yes that's the question I'm asking. How did you manage to tax online without the v5?

WinterWarmer19 · 02/01/2022 13:26

I think i need to clarify - im not aware of having ever sped, but firstly finding out that im not the registered keeper with dvla and then secondly being told that if there were any outstanding parking fines, bus lane fines, speeding fines etc they would not have been able to contact me has made me feel very anxious. they did say that they would have been able to contact me through my insurer or the dealership, and also, that they couldnt see any offences under my name. i have a clean driving license with no points, but this situation has made me feel anxious. i was just looking for a bit of support or someone who had been through the same/someone to confirm that the dealership or my insurer would have contacted me had i been sent any letters

yes - and i used it to tax the car last year. the tax went through fine, dvla could see it was taxed, i just didnt get a logbook

QuestionableMouse · 02/01/2022 13:29

Mine's paid monthly so just automatically renews. I haven't had to do anything with it since I set it up.

This. It’s impossible, surely?
JudgeRindersMinder · 02/01/2022 13:31

So why not just get in touch with the dealership instead of having all this angst?

WinterWarmer19 · 02/01/2022 13:31

@Blossomtoes the first year, the dealership taxed the car. the year after, i taxed the car online using the green slip. payment went through fine, dvla even said on the phone they could see it was taxed. i just didnt receive the logbook and didnt realise i wasnt registered because the dealership hadnt passed on my details.

OP posts:
HeronLanyon · 02/01/2022 13:32

You can easily inadvertently commit small driving errors (bus Lane hours/parking over a white line by inches etc).
If I were op I too would wonder if I had committed any driving offences which I did not know about as no address linked to car.

maffhew · 02/01/2022 13:36

That reference number can only be used once, when taxing as a new keeper. So I don't know how the dealership taxed it in the first place, for you to be able to use that number they can't have done.

Did you not realise then, a year ago, that you didn't have the V5?

If the dealership had received tickets then they would have definitely contacted you about them, because the alternative would be them paying the fines, which they wouldn't do, would they?

You can use the green slip reference number to go online and register yourself as the new keeper and that will generate a new V5.

gerardsbutler · 02/01/2022 13:40

If the dealership set it up as a direct debit for the OP, the money just comes off. Mine just gets paid every month. That said, I can’t remember if I get a reminder each year though.

no, i didnt realise last year. i usually sort all tax/mot in december so didnt even dawn on me that i didnt have the logbook, i just did it online and it went through.

is my insurance still valid? or will it not be valid until my details have been updated as registered?
