HELP, Car hasn't been registered for two years?!

WinterWarmer19 · 02/01/2022 13:01

Hi there,
This month i realised i have never received a car tax reminder since getting my new car 2 years ago. the car dealership arranged road tax, car insurance etc before i drove away that day and assured me that all paperwork would be dealt with by them. last year, 2021, i road taxed my car online and thought everything was fine.

i called up dvla last week to ask about not getting a reminder. they said i was not registered to the vehicle and the dealership who sold me the car must have failed to pass on my details.

my car is taxed, ive been taxing it online as stated and have been paying my insurance, even although i dont have a logbook. now im worried that once all my details etc are updated, that a stream of old speeding tickets or fines will come in, as it said online that thats how theyre able to contact you.

i asked dvla about this and they said any fines etc would have probably been sent to the dealership or my insurance and they would have contacted me, but what if they didnt? also - does this affect my insurance cover if im not registered? dvla said it wouldnt affect insurance, but im in a real knot with this, any help would be really appreciated!

Come to think of it I don't think I ever received the logbook for my current car! It was all a bit of a rush as I crashed the old one and needed one asap for work. Do I need to contact the DVLA or the dealership?

@Wonnle

You cannot insure a vehicle that you do not own as far as i'm aware
You definitely can, if you lease a car you don't own it...

As Maffhew said I'd try do it online if you can to save the delays.
Fill the new keeper slip in with your details and make sure the purchase date matches your receipts from when you bought it 2 years ago etc.
Insurers normally only check on things if there are discrepancies or if they think something is fraudulent.
As for them checking now though you'll either have to wait that bit out and hope they don't or you could come clean to the insurers and be super honest and explain the situation, say you honestly thought you were and just found out the garage didn't send it off but you've got the receipts and the new keeper slip and see what they say. They will wonder why you didn't notice you didn't get a log book for 2 years though.
They might be fine with it but it's up to you but as like I said they really don't like dishonesty.
I can't advise you too much on how they do claims though because I work in underwriting.

i cant see any online forms for applying for v5c - seems to all be done via application forms in the post which is a pest.

really dont know what to do in regards to telling them, they havent asked so maybe it would be best to just let this go through the post and hope that they dont check it before its updated. what a nightmare!
dvla have told me they will backdate my tax payments into my new logbook no problem, but really not sure how it will all affect my current policy if they were to check.

theres nothing fraudulent on my application, everything's been answered truthfully, theres no any discrepancies to make them ask questions so hopefully will go through

Believe me when I say it can take weeks by post. Months even.

gobbynorthernbird · 02/01/2022 17:47

Is there any chance your car will be written off?

Yes, at the end it will tell you a V5 will be processed.

my car tax was due on the 1st, havent driven the car since before new year. will i be able to pay it using the online form, or have to wait until v5 is processed and then pay?

sorry let me rephrase my last reply - the guy from dvla said i could pay my road tax at the same time as handing the application form in at the post office, how would i pay it if i did the form online?
OP posts:
Justkeeppedaling · 02/01/2022 17:57

I don't really see how you could tax and insure a car you're not the registered owner of Hmm

maffhew · 02/01/2022 18:00

You won't be able to tax it without the new V5. The reference number on the green slip can only be used once.

This is another reason you need to get it sorted ASAP, you can't tax or sorn the vehicle at the moment and it's run out of tax. Even if you're not driving it, it needs to be taxed or sorn and DVLA can check that and issue a fine. That's a bigger issue than anything else at the moment and that will invalidate your insurance.

maffhew · 02/01/2022 18:03

Yes you can tax it at the post office with a V62 but only if the vehicle is 'in the trade' which it probably is, as you bought it from a dealer.

You have two choices then, tax it at the post office on a V62 and wait weeks for it to come back, or register it online, and wait a few days for the V5 to come back to tax it.

Justkeeppedaling · 02/01/2022 18:04

Your insurance will be valid as it doesn't matter who the vehicle is registered to
That's not true. You can't insure something you don't own. Who would the insurance pay the money to in the event of a claim?

the online form doesnt work. i said i wasnt a motor trader and had bought a vehicle, and it takes you to a page to fill out the form and send it via post

Irrelevant to this situation but you can insure something you don't own, including cars.

maffhew · 02/01/2022 18:17

Fill it in as the motor trader then, it will just ask for their address, the date of sale and then new customer details.

That's the only way round I've ever done it to be fair as I'm car sales admin. It won't matter which way round you do it, the upshot is a new V5 will be generated in your name.

Also you can check on the mot/ tax status page when the last V5 was issued. This will keep you updated with when they process it and you can expect it in the post soon after.

i cant do that, im not a motor trader and that would technically be identity fraud. im going to have to post it.

It's really not.

Ok well I was just trying to help you to get the situation resolved as quickly as possible. Most people would have noticed they don't have a V5 long before two years were up. But you know best.

As others have pointed out, this is not identity fraud.

You are correctly informing DVLA that the car has changed ownership from 'the trade' to you. Nothing incorrect.

When it asks 'are you motor trade' they mean is the car currently in the trade.

If you post it off it will takes ages.

but its not currently 'in the trade' - i bought it two years ago - if dvla contacted the dealership they would find that out very quickly and id be in an even bigger mess

i dont speed. what im referring to is being slightly over on rare occasions - like 43 on a 40 - and not receiving a letter.

OP I'm sure you'll be fine. I've had my car for 2 years, done similar to you, been a bit in the odd yellow box, pulled into a bay that I shouldn't have, the only tickets I've ever gotten are for bloody parking Hmm
