Calls blocked after 999 call

Wopies · 01/01/2022 10:30

I made a call for an ambulance earlier, after this my mobile blocked me making further calls for two hours. The reason for this is in case the emergency services have to call you back. Is there a way to disable this as it is very dangerous. If the wait time for an ambulance is too long you would be unable to call a taxi or a friend to take you to hospital.
If anyone knows if is is possible to turn this feature off please let me know.

I’ve never heard of this - is it your phone or your network provider?

Crotiq · 01/01/2022 10:32

Never heard of this before

I called 999 to report a blatant drunk driver the other week. Phone worked fine afterwards

kimlo · 01/01/2022 10:33

I've bot had that. My phone does unblock blocked numbers after for a while though. No idea why.

GinandGobbledegook · 01/01/2022 10:36

I've never heard of that.

As Kimlo has experienced, your phone may unblock blocked numbers for 2 hours when you've called emergency services. I am not sure on the logic though, if you've blocked it you know its not important.

turnaroundtime · 01/01/2022 10:38

Are you sure? There is something where after an emergency call, all your BLOCKED numbers are unblocked for 2 hours but not usually that you are blocked from calling out

CorrBlimeyGG · 01/01/2022 10:40

Did you try to dial out? It's supposed to be call blocking that gets disabled.

Summersdreaming · 01/01/2022 10:41

As pp said, my phone unblocked blocked numbers after a 999 call.. have you tried to make a call?

anon12345678901 · 01/01/2022 10:44

I've never heard of that. I know if you have no minutes left you can still can 999 but no other numbers. I've called 999 before and my mobile worked fine after for me to call other people. You may want to speak to your network provider on this one.

Wopies · 01/01/2022 10:56

Sorry I must have misread it and it said
unblocked then that's a relief. Thanks for everyone's help.

Glad it was a misunderstanding.

Hope everything is OK.

godmum56 · 01/01/2022 11:00

the unblocking all numbers after a 999 or 911 call seems to be a thing on Android phones but not preventing other outgoing calls which sounds dangerous to me.

bearlyactive · 01/01/2022 11:15

Yes they unblock numbers, they don't block them, presumably so anyone can contact you if they need to.

furbabymama87 · 01/01/2022 11:17

Came on to say this but it had already been figured out. The numbers you may have blocked previously become unblocked for a while, but you can still make calls and people can call you.

Theunamedcat · 01/01/2022 11:19

On some phones you can block certain types of calls which unfortunately means people like DWP police etc can't get through in an emergency all numbers get unblocked to get around that blocking just in case they need to call you back

119 apparently is classed as an emergency number too which I didn't know

godmum56 · 01/01/2022 11:28

also also it doesn't seem to happen on iphone, only android

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 01/01/2022 11:28

that makes a lot of sense to unblock all incoming calls...I have my phone set to DND mostly, and contacts only, so if your number is not in that list then it won't ring ever!
That is a thing I have never even considered! Although the mobile signal is so dire here, I doubt it would make any difference!

that makes a lot of sense

I guess if people block unknown, then they might not get through

itsstillhotinperth · 01/01/2022 12:30

Think it's 112 - international standard emergency number.

119 is emergency number in South Korea for fire brigade and ambulance apparently...

LittleRoundRobin · 01/01/2022 12:31

@Wopies

Whaaa? Blocked from making further calls to ANYone?! I don't get this, about a fortnight ago, I called an ambulance for an elderly chap who fell down some steps. Then I phoned my friend who I was meeting soon, (10 minutes after,) to say I would be about 15-20 minutes late. I wasn't blocked from making any calls.

I'm in the UK I called it and the message popped up saying all calls were unblocked for two hours as I had called an emergency number I was very confused but it gave me the option to reblock them now or wait two hours I re blocked them 😅

so that its CERTAIN that emergency services can phone you back. As I said, seems to be Android only
