What are your favourite or usually-bought wines, whether red, white, pink, still, sparkling, good value or rather expensive?

For reds, I usually go for Cabernet Sauvignon from California (e.g. Gallo) or Australia but I especially like the Wanted Zin Zinfandel which I can get from Morrison's. It's often discounted, which helps. With whites, I've tended to stick to Chardonnays from Australia and South America but I've been adventurous recently and bought the odd Gavi and Pecorino from Italy and some French Sauvignon Blanc. I got a bargain bottle of Chablis earlier this year at £3.35 - I haven't tried it yet but for that price I can't complain too much if it turns out to be meh! I've yet to buy a bottle of Prosecco and I haven't bought Champagne in years. I find that a reasonably priced Cava is good enough for me; the Mark's and Spencer Prestige Cava - white or rose - are both excellent, particularly when they're sold for £8 a bottle rather than £10.00.

This rosé from Aldi is gorgeous. Vegan too. Not that I'm vegan, but always handy to know.

This is my current fave - a dry rose from Lidl, £7.99

Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. Normally £10 a bottle but discounted sometimes.

I was also going to say oyster bay Sauvignon blanc.

Fatandfifty49 · 31/12/2021 23:27

Red: Beefsteak Malbec or anything from the South American region
White: Like New World - e.g. Tikki Ridge, Crux
Rosé: not a big fan but Mirabeau Pure is very drinkable
For Prosecco, can't beat a San Leo. Freixenet is also good. Most Cavas are quite palatable of you like dry and you can't go wrong with most Champagnes!

Aldi organic Malbec, Sainsbury's Taste The Difference Prosecco (the only one that doesn't give me a headache), La Vieille Femme Rose, Laurent Perrier Champagne. Had a lot of good wines from Aldi this year. I find their more expensive ones are better than the cheap stuff.

McGuigan's and Yellow Tail - all varieties, readily available and easy drinking.
19 Crimes slightly more expensive but often on offer and also mostly easy drinking

For white wine I love Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc - usually about £10.

We’ll pay out for a really nice red - Barolo, Amarone or Pomerol from a wine merchant but can get an ok Barolo and Amarone in the supermarket for £15-£18.

The Pomerol we had on Christmas Day was a Chateau Gazin 1981 and it was £65. It was so nice we bought 2 more bottles for dinner tomorrow.

In what way is ordinary wine not vegan? (Genuine question)
batmanladybird · 01/01/2022 13:50

Also love a san Leo Prosecco
And the Romeo and Juliet

Shmithecat2 · 01/01/2022 13:52

@batmanladybird

The way it's filtered/the fining process - milk or egg products are often used.

Inextremis · 01/01/2022 13:56

Tesco do a really nice Reisling - lovely with seafood or a curry.

Watching. Struggling to find any decent supermarket wines recently.

Blueberrycreampie · 01/01/2022 14:21

Most wines are not vegan and some not vegetarian as fish swim bladders are used in the fining process!

Blueberrycreampie · 01/01/2022 14:24

I had Jam Shed Shiraz the other day on the recommendation of our waiter. It really was like drinking liquid jam! Will not be trying this again🙄.

jackstini · 01/01/2022 14:32

White I like very oaky Chardonnays so 19 Crimes or Dark Horse, although the Aldi Beachfront yellow is very decent for the price!

Reds, a good Malbec or Rioja - current favourite is Ramon Bilbao Rioja Crianza - usually £9 but on 3 bottles for £18 at Tesco currently

jackstini · 01/01/2022 14:32

@Blueberrycreampie - agree it's awful - far too sweet!

WildRosie · 01/01/2022 14:32

Italian dry whites in the supermarkets are usually very good value, especially Verdicchio. Soave and Frascati too, although I'm not sure these two are as popular as they once were. Pinot Grigio seems to be everywhere these days but I find it rather dull and flavourless. I find that you have to be prepared to pay a fair bit more to find a tasty Italian red.

Clawdy · 01/01/2022 14:41

Never thought I would go for a Pinot Grigio from anywhere other than Italy, but Yellowtail Pinot Grigio is now my favourite.

It's shit. Absolute garbage.

Fancy label. Blend some strawberry jam with some vodka and you're there.

Mrsjayy · 01/01/2022 14:46

I really like yellow tail whites the Rosè is very drinkable. I don't drink red. I think I got my last bottles for £7 .

Mrsjayy · 01/01/2022 14:47

Oh I bought Jam shed for Christmas presents is it horrible Shock
