What are your favourite or usually-bought wines, whether red, white, pink, still, sparkling, good value or rather expensive?

For reds, I usually go for Cabernet Sauvignon from California (e.g. Gallo) or Australia but I especially like the Wanted Zin Zinfandel which I can get from Morrison's. It's often discounted, which helps. With whites, I've tended to stick to Chardonnays from Australia and South America but I've been adventurous recently and bought the odd Gavi and Pecorino from Italy and some French Sauvignon Blanc. I got a bargain bottle of Chablis earlier this year at £3.35 - I haven't tried it yet but for that price I can't complain too much if it turns out to be meh! I've yet to buy a bottle of Prosecco and I haven't bought Champagne in years. I find that a reasonably priced Cava is good enough for me; the Mark's and Spencer Prestige Cava - white or rose - are both excellent, particularly when they're sold for £8 a bottle rather than £10.00.

@normanthegonk

Chapel down..English sparkling..it beats prosecco hands down.
So it should. It costs around three times as much as a standard Prosecco.

I have never met a Chateauneuf du Pape that I didn't like. Our usual supermarket is either Sainsburys or Aldi, and Sainsburys sells La Courlande which is nice. I have had one from Aldi that was nice but they rarely seem to have it. Also like a Valpolicella (photo of one also from Sainsburys that I like). I used to love a merlot, this is one I liked, but in recent years it seems to give me a cracking headache after only a small glass. I've thrown this Aldi malbec into the trolley on many an occasion, super cheap but I really like it.

I'm not much of a white wine drinker but I do like a white Burgundy (photo again from Sainsburys) or a Chablis. Someone bought us a bottle of Yellow Tail pinot grigio recently and I drank it on NYE and really enjoyed it, I'd buy it again. It was quite the antidote to two weeks of eating stodge.

Prosecco or champagne - not overly fussy as long as it's not too sweet (would only buy brut prosecco given a choice). I'm not massively bothered about either and only really bother if my husband fancies it and wants to share a bottle.

Have never ever managed to like rosé but suspect I've only ever tried shit ones. If anyone can recommend one that isn't like syrup I'd be willing to give it another go.

I find I'm much less fussy about red wine than white, it would need to be really really awful for me to not finish a glass.

Meant to add - I remember when I was 18 or 19 (I'm now 41) and worked in bars, there was a bit of a craze among people my age for Ernest & Julio white grenache. Possibly it was the first taste of wine for many of them. I remember trying it and thinking it was godawful stuff but I lived mainly on bottles of Miller in those days Grin

I don't think I've had a bad GSM (French or Aussie).
If you like a chateuneuf du pape you should try a rasteau. It's the appellation next door and is just as good but much better value. Aldi occasionally have one available.

BeReet · 01/01/2022 23:47

@bluechameleon

My go to ordinary wine is the Tesco Finest Picpoul de Pinet. It is only £7.50 but tastes more expensive. For something more special I love white burgundy.
This is my absolute favourite as well, I buy it by the case. Also partial to Morrison's Cremant which I like more than prosecco atm. I go for a Pinot Noir if I'm drinking red and I have yet to find a palatable rosé, they are all so sweet!
evilharpy · 01/01/2022 23:51

@Winederlust I'll look for a Rasteau next time I'm in Aldi (or Sainsburys). I've never tried one.

WildRosie · 02/01/2022 00:21

Rose is a tricky wine (there was a fad for calling it 'blush' when I was growing up). The best rose is probably rose Champagne, or Cava depending on one's budget.

Freixenet Rose is my favourite at the minute .

Kinsters · 02/01/2022 06:01

I once watched a grape harvest at a vineyard in Australia - wine is definitely not vegetarian if you factor in the bugs and other small critters that end up in the grape bins!

I always go for a Chardonnay for white and pinot noir for red. My favourites have been ones I've drunk at parties so I don't know what they are or where they were bought but they're probably more expensive than I'd ever buy myself!

GettingStuffed · 02/01/2022 06:04

One of our favourites is 19 crimes, we've never had a bad one.

musicalfrog · 02/01/2022 06:07

On Jam Shed. There are two types, Argentinian and Australian. The Australian is much nicer.

PurBal · 02/01/2022 06:21

Dark Horse Malbec (which you can get in Tesco for £7 when on offer) has received a bunch is very good.

Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc as PP mentioned (£8 when on offer).

Tesco Finest Cote de Gascogne is under £6 when on offer which is pretty amazing.

We are Wine Society members so some of our go to wines are from there and because we do bulk orders I can remember what all our favourites are (unlike the ones I pick up regularly in Tesco) including a go to rose and burgundy.

Our favourite sparkling is Nyetimber Classic Cuvée, about £30 per bottle when you can get a good price on it. We tend to stay stocked up. It’s an English Sparkling. It’s therefore more similar to champagne than prosecco or cava but without the champagne price tag. And in my opinion a lot nicer.

weekend2021 · 02/01/2022 06:22

Seems like I’m in the minority then, but I love Jam Shed. Which is strange because I don’t normally like any sweet alcoholic drinks. I don’t feel that there’s much difference between the Australian and Argentinian ones, both are very drinkable and I never seem to get a bad head afterwards Wink

PurBal · 02/01/2022 06:22

*bunch of good reviews

PurBal · 02/01/2022 06:26

So many I forgot to mention.. if buying Prosecco (which we do sometimes) we’d go out of our way to buy Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference. Great for Buck’s Fizz, Aperol Spritz or just on it’s own of you prefer.

Ringonrighthand · 02/01/2022 06:26

Villa Maria do a lovely “blush” now too, so many sauv blanc rosés around these days. I also love the VM gold label, it’s delish.

I used to love Nobillo but it disappeared, sad times.

I’m same as pp’s, cloudy bay, oyster bay, Villa Maria etc. if I move away from NZ SB then maybe a Gavi or Viognier

Prosecco wise I don’t really like canti ones, not sure why. Or the chequered label Tesco ones, I do find the more expensive the better.

I love champagne, pink bollinger, white veuve being favourites. I have just been bought a bottle of Dom Perignon in a box for my engagement but I have covid right now so that will be saved until I can fully appreciate it as I’ve never had it!

LBOCS2 · 02/01/2022 13:04

Currently obsessed with the Guv'nor red from Majestic. It's a blend and it's incredibly drinkable. I also rate the Australian red (own brand) from Waitrose for a drinking red - you can generally rely on the quality of supermarket 'own' as they have specialist wine buyers choosing for them.

I've gone off white in more recent years, and loathe Prosecco - there's all sorts of rubbish on the market as it's gone more mainstream. I'd much rather have a Cremant, cava or even a really cheap champagne from Aldi/Lidl.

Ajl46 · 02/01/2022 16:15

Freixenet is my favourite cava. Veuve Cliquot is my favourite champagne but is for special occasions only! Red wise I like Riojas & Malbecs mainly - the Kirkland Malbec is very nice. For whites, I like Denbies' Flint Valley.

Scottishnewbie2022 · 02/01/2022 16:17

The Barefoot sparkling Pink Moscato is my fave.

languagelover96 · 02/01/2022 16:28

Prosecco.

WildRosie · 02/01/2022 23:52

My Mum and Dad were big fans of Hungarian and Bulgarian wines in the mid to late 1980s. Stuff like Bull's Blood and various cabernets and sauvignons, often with the words 'Minosegi Bor' on the labels. I think it was Hungarian for 'quality wine'. I certainly remember Eastern Bloc wine being cheap but I can't speak for the quality.

We buy these from our local vineyard - the English rosé (medium dry) and Penny Red (haven't tried any of their whites).

Staffordshire is a long way north for a vineyard. I am curious about whether the wine is any good. I’ve never drunk a good English red but perhaps climate change will see to that!

Peckhampalace · 03/01/2022 12:50

White, Elegant frog voigner, is only in Sainsbury's I think, red is diabolo dark red from Asda/Sainsbury's.
